CURRICULUM VITAE

Dr. R. Baskar, is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, Haryana, India. The nature of job responsibilities includes teaching, research, and associated administrative activities. He was the Director, Public Outreach (February 2018 to August 2019) and the Chairperson, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Guru Jambheshwar University of Science, and Technology, Hisar (June 2019 to June 2020).

He studied Geology at Panjab University, receiving M. Sc (Hons) Degree in 1988, and M. Phil Degree with distinction in 1989; PhD Degree in 1992. During his doctoral program, he got the Junior Research Fellowship (1988-90) from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. He was a recipient of the prestigious Dr. K.S. Krishnan Department of Atomic Energy Research Fellowship (1990), the Government of India. He was awarded Senior Research Fellowship (1992-1993) by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. He was awarded the ICSC World Laboratory Scholarship (1990-1991) to work at the University of Paris-Sud, France, during his doctoral program. He was at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehra Dun and was awarded Research Associateship (1993) by the Department of Ocean Development, Government of India. He was awarded Research Associateship (1993-1995) by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi to work at the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

As a faculty member of the University, he has been awarded several UGC major research projects. He had Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) collaborative project - “Biogeochemical signatures and high-resolution paleoclimatic records in speleothems form caves in Meghalaya (India)” with Dr Joyanto Routh, Stockholm University, Stockholm. He was invited as an Academic Guest in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, Technical University of Munich, Germany, Centre for Geobiology, Norway, Stockholm University, Sweden, VTT, Finland, Jagiellonian University, Poland and Slovak Caves Administration, Slovakia. His interest in academics is reflected by his active participation in several national and international conferences, workshops, field work and training programs including outreach activities (France, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Argentina, Austria, Czech Republic, South Africa, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Malaysia, Slovakia, Qatar, Poland and Hungary). His research has recently taken a new direction into the field of geomicrobiology to understand the influence of microbes on mineral dissolution / precipitation and environmental geochemistry of speleothems. He has been professing for the seamless integration of geology and microbiology and has been one of the pioneering Indian workers in cave geomicrobiology. He has published several research papers along with other workers, which has resulted in the significant advancement of fundamental knowledge about mineral- microbe interactions. He is an examiner/expert for universities/public service commission and a reviewer of many national/international funding agencies/Journals. The Chhattisgarh Council of Science and Technology, Raipur felicitated him for outstanding contributions in Environmental Sciences, February 27th and 28th, 2018. He was invited as a subject expert in the Workshop conducted by Haryana State Higher Education Council, , Haryana, 15th September 2018. He was one of the Key discussant, 1st International Conference on Landslides Risk Reduction and Resilience-2019, 28th November, National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi. He is a subject expert in the UGC, AICTE and MoES.

As a teacher, he is 24x7x365 available for students. He uses all tools provided by technology as teaching aids: from traditional blackboard to the models, slides, overhead projectors, videos, and the web. Teaching is his passion. He has introduced courses in environmental geology, geobiology, geomicrobiology and natural hazards. He has contributed immensely to the development of E-content: e-PG pathshala; IGNOU, New Delhi; MOOC programs; Radio and video lectures.

He has continuously professionally updated himself with post-graduate diploma in Environmental Management (2007) and post-graduate diploma in Environmental Economics (2008) from the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad. He has completed a post-graduate diploma in Environmental Law (2012) from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore.

He strongly believes that public engagement with science is essential for a high level of outreach activities. He has completed a one-year training course in Science Journalism (2011-2012) conducted by the Indian Science Communication Society (ISCOS), Lucknow. He is the Corresponding member, Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management (GEM), (IUGS), Netherlands. He is a member of the Association of Geoscientists for International Development (AGID). He is the Deputy Council Member in India for IGEO International Geoscience Education Organization). He regularly conducts an International Earth Science Olympiad Test for School students in Hisar on behalf of the Geological Society of India. He was nominated as an Observer by the Geological Society of India, Bangalore in the Indian team to the IESO (International Earth Science Olympiad), held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 8-12, 2012. He was felicitated at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (HBCSE) (Dec 22, 2012) for being one of the team leaders from India, who took part in International Earth Science Olympiad, Argentina, 2012. He was nominated as a Leader of the Indian team by the Geological Society of India, Bangalore to the IESO (International Earth Science Olympiad), held in Mysore, India, September 11-19, 2013. He was felicitated at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (HBCSE) (Dec 22, 2013) for being the Indian team leader for participation in International Earth Science Olympiad, India, 2013. He Co-ordinated and delivered a lecture on behalf of the Society of Earth Scientists (SES), Lucknow 6th foundation day celebrations at GJUST, Hisar. He was nominated as the Course In charge of the training program for the National Earth Science Olympiad program from 13th May to 1st June 2014 by the Geological Society of India, Bangalore. He was the INSA invitee for a meeting (19thMay 2014) on outreach activity about climate change issues. He is the UGC NET/NEET/ JEE Examination Observer. He was elected Member of the Sectional Committee of the section of Earth System Sciences, ISCA 2014- 2015, ISCA 2017-18 (102ndand 105th session of the Indian Science Congress). He is Fellow of the Geological Society of India, Bangalore. He is the Fellow of the Gondwana Geological Society, Nagpur. He is the Fellow of the Earth Science Society of India, Lucknow. He is also the life member AMI, ISCA and GGS, Nagpur. He is the Program Advisory and Monitoring Committee (PAMC) member of the program entitled "Climate Change"- Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India (2015-2018). He is the Paper coordinator for Environmental Geology for the UGC e-PG pathshala content writing (M. Sc. Environmental Sciences). He was honoured with the appointment as IUGS-IGEO Geoscience Education Field Officer in the European Geosciences Union Meeting held in Vienna, 2019. He will be conducting workshops to offer training in Geosciences to the school teachers in India. He is the Council Member, Geological Society of India, Bangalore for the triennium 2019-2022. He is the Research Advisor of the Asia- Pacific Science Center (APACSCI) w.e.f 13th January 2020, Singapore. He is Member, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, USA; Member, International Association for promoting Geoethics, Italy.

He is the Life member of the Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI) and the Regional Coordinator of SPSTI, Hisar district. He is the Member, Governing Council, Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI), 17th October 2020 to 16th October 2025. He regularly delivers popular scientific lectures in schools, colleges, universities and has written several popular science articles. Besides English and , he is familiar with French, Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi and Malayalam Languages. He is a firm believer in the concept of Kaizen philosophy, which is the continuous improvement of mind, body, and soul.
