THE NEWSLETTER OF , AND LOXLEY PARISHES Issue No: 210 June 2019 Loxley C of E Community Primary School Christian values are nurtured at the heart of all we do at Loxley Primary School and we feel so lucky to have such caring and supportive children and families. This half-term we were excited to take part in designing ceiling tiles to brighten up the Children’s Accident and Emergency Department at Hospital. Eileen Rock, Fundraising Manager for the South NHS Foundation Trust, has now collected our completed tiles and we are looking forward to taking the pupils who designed them to see them in situ at the hospital later this month. Loxley Primary School was also very excited to discover that we are this year’s County Winner for the Recycle With Michael clothes and shoes recycling scheme. The scheme raises money for The Salvation Army whilst working to protect the environment. Charlotte Lewis and the charity’s mascot Michael made a surprise visit to the children in assembly on Tuesday, 7 May, to present us with a special certificate and trophy for our efforts. Well done to all involved in both of these charitable works! EB Loxley Church Concert Our next concert will be at St Nicholas’ Church, Loxley, on Sunday 16 June at 3.00pm when we are delighted to welcome Opera Warwick, the student-run Operatic Society of the University of Warwick. It has been established for many years and has a reputation for staging its own very entertaining productions of operas at the Warwick Arts Centre, to great critical and popular acclaim. Its ethos is to dispel the myth that opera has to be a boring and fossilised genre but can be exciting, stimulating and is a repository of wonderful tunes! We are very fortunate to have Opera Warwick as regular visitors to Loxley at the end of the summer term when its members turn out in force to entertain us with their party pieces and favourite numbers. There will be solos, duets, choruses and some surprise items. Those who have been to their concerts before will know how incredibly talented they are with their enthusiastic and engaging performances. If you have not seen them before please do not miss this opportunity! As usual the concert will last for about 60 minutes and is free with a retiring collection in aid of the Church Fabric Fund. DW

The Hampton Lucy Annual Plant & Produce Sale A reminder that the Annual Plant & Produce Sale will be taking place on Saturday, 1 June, from 9.00am at the Village Hall. In addition to the usual wide range of seedlings, plants and shrubs, we shall also be selling local produce and will welcome donations of jams, chutneys, cakes and biscuits. Charlecote Mill flour and fresh locally-baked bread will be available once again. Prices are always modest and customers return year-on-year so it is a good idea to arrive early! We are always in need of helpers on the day and if you can you spare some time, please do get in touch with any of the Plant Sale Team. You can also contact me, Helen Leeson; e-mail: [email protected] or call 01789 842258 / 07776 141395. All proceeds will be allocated to the Village Hall. Many thanks in anticipation. Dear friends,

From the 1st May, for a period of six months, it is my privilege to serve as your Vicar. Secondments of this nature are unusual but can be of great benefit, offering the potential for us to learn from and encourage each other. My wife Jo and I celebrated twenty-five years of marriage last year. We have three children, Ben who is seventeen, Harry who is fifteen and Maisie who is twelve years old. I've held Christian faith for well over thirty years and been ordained as a Priest for twelve. Although I've spent time in urban and suburban ministry along with both hospital and prison chaplaincy, most of my time has been in rural parishes. I have previously served as Vicar of a number of far-flung villages in the southern tip of the Peak District National Park. I was also Rural Dean of Ashbourne and held a responsibility in the Personnel side of Diocesan life. More recently I have been ministering in the parishes of with and . Prior to ordination, I worked as an engineer, businessman and academic, mainly in the area of information technology. Away from ministry, I enjoy woodwork and power boating (when I can get to the coast). I look forward to meeting you and hearing your story. I will be joining with those who lead worship and engage in pastoral ministry across the Benefice, including the three schools. Please pray for me as I begin and know that you are held in my prayers. To contact me either email [email protected] or phone 07758 704452.

Wishing you Christ's peace,

Andy. (Rev’d Dr. Andy Larkin, Vicar.)

The event was a sell out with over £600 raised and a good time was had by all with the dance floor occupied all night!! A huge thank you goes to Lion Robin Hammond and all the helpers who made the evening such a great success. Also thanks to Dave Derbyshire and Warwick Kia for their generous sponsorship. We are being threatened with ‘Part Two’ later in the year – Sixties Revival revived!! Continuing on a musical theme, we are hosting a Midsummer Musical Miscellany featuring Cubbington Silver Band, City of Coventry Male Voice Choir, Wellesbourne Sings, and Voice Box, a barbershop quartet. It will be in Kineton Village Hall on Saturday, 15 June at 7.30pm. There will be a licenced bar, raffle and light refreshments provided, all for the great price of £12. Tickets are available from Nifty Needle in Kineton, from Lion Robin Hammond on 01789 621136 or from Lion Heather Brown on 01789 841419.Finally just to let you know that we raised over £500 from this year’s Easter Egg raffles. A huge thanks to everyone who entered, and to all those pubs, restaurants and businesses which participated. AS Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI The two 2019 NFWI resolutions Don’t Fear the Smear and A Call against the Decline in Local Bus Services, were debated at the May meeting and after much discussion were both agreed unanimously. Our speaker for the evening, David Fry, then judged the Posy of Herbs competition and the winner was Jane Whyatt, with Rachel Lucas second and Helen Hartley third. David then talked about Marton Museum of Country Bygones. The museum was the creation of a Marton resident, George Tims, who, collected many and varied domestic items as well as objects from rural industries from the 1950s onwards, building up a record of Warwickshire rural life over the last two hundred years. He started his collection in the stables of the vicarage but as it grew it was then moved into the barns. When he died in 2005, the residents took over managing the collection - which is now housed in a purpose-built museum in the playing fields of the pretty village of Marton. Everyone enjoyed the talk and it was agreed that an outing should be organised to visit the museum sometime in 2020. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 5 June, in Charlecote Village Hall when Susan Rasmussen will give a talk on Dress Style and the competition will be The Most Interesting Item of Old Clothing. PT News From If you’ve ever queued in the Orangery for a cup of tea on a sunny day you’ll be as relieved as we are that the new Wood Yard Café is finally open. At the moment it will be open from mid-morning, with the Orangery still open from 9.00am, but we’re keeping this under review. Our food and beverage staff have coped magnificently over the years with all the limits imposed by lack of space in the Orangery, and recent high winds have meant that we had to close the Orangery more often than was convenient for anyone (due to its proximity to the ancient cedars). The Wood Yard Café changes all this, and it’s the ideal spot for snacks, hot drinks and ice-creams for families and dog walkers, with plenty of outside space. If you’re coming in with a buggy or wheelchair you’ll find it easier to push across the gravel from the side entrance by the Spinney. Over time, the larch wood cladding will fade to grey to match other timber in this part of Charlecote and all the benches have been made by the Trust’s carpenters at Dudmaston. Meanwhile, if you’re feeling crafty, do take a look at the various workshops we have coming up which are bookable online. We’ve got willow weaving, book binding and ceramics (a second slot added for that one as the first sold out). MG

HLPC and The John Lucy Trust Hampton Lucy Parish Council can nominate a parishioner for the role of Trustee on The John Lucy Trust. Currently the Council’s nominee is Ken Cockshull who will be stepping down at the end of June. Ken is also Secretary to the Trust and it would be helpful if applicants are willing and able to take on that role. The Trust owns several properties in the village, including The Boars Head and the Village Hall, and is responsible for their management. It provides financial support for the church and the school and can consider grants to residents for educational activities. The Parish Council is now seeking applications from interested parishioners; if you wish to be considered please send a summary CV demonstrating relevant experience to the Parish Clerk, Dr. John Dunkerton, 41/42 Church Street, Hampton Lucy,
