The home of the Sephardi community since 1656 Hello and WELCOME THE COVENANT OF CREATION ‘For six days you shall do Melakha and on the seventh rest’. (Exodus, 31:15) The command to rest on the seventh is offset by a command to engage in Melakha for the other six. The significance of is lost when it is seen as a day on its own, outside the context of the other days of the week. Melakha is creative work. The actions that we take to bring a concept into reality. There are 39 principle acts of creative work that we identify which were performed for the building of the Mishkan () in the desert. These acts are not just work or toil, but creative activities that help bring new realities into the world. We see our creativity as holy because in our ability to create we resemble the Creator. In creation there must be times when the work ceases, when progress must be assessed and when completion must be determined. If no time is taken for this, the work is not creative — it does not have an end or goal — instead, it becomes work for its own sake WHAT’S INSIDE which in the end enslaves the human spirit and psyche. Shabbat is an integral aspect of our freedom and creative will. It allows for us to think GREATER COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING // 5 about our lives and our creative direction and it allows for our creations to be. Without creativity, however, without the drive to change reality with thought and action, Shabbat BEVIS MARKS // 6 is nothing more than down-time. That alone is not holy. The sanctity of Shabbat is that it brings meaning and definition to our creative acts and allows for us to sit closer to God LAUDERDALE ROAD // 12 when we and He come together to ponder and celebrate Creation. YOUTH // 18 In this sense it is the sign of covenant between us and God. WEMBLEY // 20 “It shall be a sign for all time between Me and the people of Israel. For in six days God made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He ceased.…”(Exodus, SHA’ARE TIKVAH SCHOOL // 24 31:17) CALENDAR // 28 We co-create our lives and the world with the ultimate Creator. This is the sacred covenant of the people of Israel and when we honour and protect it, we, in turn, are honoured and protected by it.

The Children of Israel were granted Torah in their desert escape from Egypt. These Children had been long abused, royal slaves known to no-one, whipped, overworked, murdered to cull their numbers. Israel’s new royal master set Shabbat above the other gifts of Torah. Rest on the seventh day is anchored in G-d’s creation, “G-d completed by the seventh day His work, and ceased… from all His work.” To prove it would never be grasped back, the gift is enshrined in law as forth commandment, “Remember the day by sanctifying it.” Sanctified—set apart as Holy, free of sin LAUDERDALE and impurity. The gift is to be shared—“The seventh day is a Sabbath to your G-d. On it you shall not work, nor your son or daughter, manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the stranger inside your gates.” So G-d established Himself as a new kind of master, aware that work must be done, but aware His humans and animals are frail and LUNCH CLUB need rest. Staring deeply into Shabbat, our sages searched for a “hidden jewel.” Our sages feared they were like a young child presented with a boxed set of the Talmud by an elderly relative, keen to make the gift prematurely before his death. The parents set the many volumes Shabbat lunches throughout the year on a bookshelf, signalling a future of study. The child climbs into the overturned box and makes it a castle, a play house and a secret for young families after Kiddush, great cave. Enjoying the rest, the candles, the food, the pleasure of blessing the children, the day with family and friends, might seem enough. food and great company - we look But are they still the box? The sages never stopped searching for deeper meaning, the hidden jewel whose facets catch the light and flash fire into the Jewish soul. forward to seeing you there! Judaism celebrates many glistening ideas about the Shabbat, and none shines so bright it obscures the others. Perhaps there is no single jewel, but rather the merchants pouch of assorted diamonds, some larger and bluer than others, but each of them precious. So often life is difficult, and our business dealings or our relationships come under strain. Psychologists observe we then naturally slow down, granting ourselves time to think and find solutions. Watch out for new dates coming soon! On Shabbat also, we slow down. Our minds are kites whose string is tied round our payer books, but whose sail sometimes drifts over our concerns—gliding unbidden over family, home and workplace, lurching in breezes created as we turn the many pages. So, in this way, Shabbat carves out time out to review and reset our lives. The gentle and frequent nature of Shabbat helps us repair small Rabbi Israel Elia tears, well before the garment rips apart. LAUDERDALE ROAD SYNAGOGUE Slaves are told what to do. The Children of Israel, set free, have many choices to make. Our Shabbat rest, its prayers and its study, are healing jewels set within our lives, making those lives more precious to ourselves, to our families, to our communities and to G-d’s world.
