On February 14, the Church celebrates the feast of Saints Cyril (a monk) and Methodius (a bishop of Pannonia). They were brothers who were asked by Rome to work together preaching and preparing the Slavic liturgical texts in Moravia. The reason they are remembered on February 14 is because Cyril died on that day. Upon further research in the old Roman Martyrology, I WELCOME TO ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS PARISH! discovered in the third century Rome there were two We are blessed that you have chosen to visit our saints named Valenne who died on February 14. The community of faith! He was jailed because family! he aided persecuted Chrisans. People believed that he Visit www.sthugo.org or Follow us on Facebook . cured his jail keeper’s daughter of blindness. The www.facebook.com/sthugoo hehillsparish second St. Valenne was a bishop about sixty miles from Rome who suffered martyrdom in 273 A.D. One source says that he was persecuted for converng a Roman family to Chrisanity. Both saints named Valenne “sent leers of encouragement to people dreading persecuon. Hence, we send valennes decorated with flowers, hearts and the color red, which symbolizes the blood of martyrdom” (Companion to the Calendar, p48). At some point in history Valenne’s Day took on romanc overtones. Some believe that the romanc customs on Valenne’s Day probably came from an ancient Roman Fesval called Lupercalia, which took place every February 15. This fesval honored Juno, Pan the god of nature and the Roman goddess of women and marriage. In an old book by John Brand published in 1877, it seems that people in England observed Valenne’s Day as early as 1446 A.D. In those days, people chose their valennes by wring names on slips of paper and then drawing them by chance. A erward, each young man wore the paper with a lady’s name on his sleeve for several days. The expression, “He wears his heart on his sleeve,” probably came from this custom. I would like to suggest that we use Valenne’s Day as an HY1 F _JY1 S- Y 7 opportunity to send a card, email or a hand wrien Created by Suzanne Young, the work is of unglazed leer to encourage someone we know who may be porcelain and was commissioned specifically for the new experiencing difficules in life.
