Iconic medium to large tree up to Ht.20m. (Monkey Puzzle). Initially slow growing, an Araucaria araucana upright tree producing regular tiers of branches with rigid spine tipped, glossy green leaves. An endangered native of the Chilean and Argentinian Andes. Hardy and 4 -5L £20 (7 year old) wind firm, grows best in moist, well drained soil.

Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’ A compact, bushy, semi-evergreen of 1.5 x 1.5m. The bright glossy - green foliage is bronze-tinted when young. Lilac-pink flowers are freely borne in summer (not available at present) and autumn. Grow in a sheltered, sunny position in any moist but well-drained soil.

Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’ A rhizomatous herbaceous perennial to 1.5m x 0.75m with upright purple - black stems and foliage. Dense racemes of fragrant white flowers during the autumn. 2L £7.50 Grow in a moist, humus-rich soil in sun or partial shade.

A clump-forming perennial, native of the Balkans, up to 15cm high. Blue-green Alchemilla erythropoda rounded leaves 4cm across with sharply toothed lobes. Sprays of small yellow - green flowers in July and August. Plant in a moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial 1L - £5.00 shade.

A large, dense evergreen shrub, native of Chile. Dark green leaves with reddish stalks are Amomyrtus luma conspicuously copper-coloured when young. Fragrant white flowers in May followed by berries that start red and ripen to black. Plant in a sheltered position in a moist, well- 2L £12.50 drained soil in partial shade. Hardy to-10C.

An interesting evergreen shrub from the Valdivian rainforest of Chile and adjacent Aristotelia chilensis Argentina, up to 3m x 3m. Lustrous green leaves up to 13cm long with reddish petioles on reddened stems. Small black fruits in autumn. Best in mild areas or well 3L £10.00 sheltered sites, in full sun or light shade in moist, well-drained soil.

A deciduous shrub to 2m x 1.5m. Large clusters of small white flowers in spring Aronia x prunifolia ‘Brilliant’ followed by clusters of long-lasting bright-red berries. The glossy-green foliage turns brilliant red in the autumn. Grow in a reasonably fertile, moist yet well-drained soil in 2L £7.50 sun or partial shade.

A vigorous deciduous shrub to 2m x 1.5m. Large clusters of small white flowers in Aronia x prunifolia ‘Viking’ spring followed by clusters of black edible fruits which last in to winter. An evergreen shrub to 2.5m from central Chile. (Hardy -7 to -10°C). Extremely fragrant Azara petiolaris small yellow flowers in spring. Introduced by William Lobb from Brazil in 1841. Begonia coccinea Now very rare in cultivation. Grow in a free-draining, slightly acidic compost in good light but avoiding direct sun, with a minimum winter temperature of 10°C

A choice, evergreen, twining climber up to 5m endemic to the Coastal Cordillera Berberidopsis corallina of southern Chile. Leathery heart-shaped leaves with toothed margins, dark green (Chilean coral plant) above, glaucous beneath. Deep- crimson flowers borne in late summer in pendant racemes. Best on a sheltered, shaded wall in moist, free-draining lime-free soil. A 2L £12.50 good cool conservatory plant. Endangered in the wild.

An evergreen shrub from central Chile. Elliptic to ovate lanceolate leaves 5cm long Berberis chilensis x 2.5cm wide with up to 5 spine- tipped teeth. Thorns up to 5cm singularly or in 3’s. Racemes of lemon-yellow flowers are followed by spherical matt-blue fruits. Plant in a 1L £7.50 sheltered, sunny position in a moist, well drained soil. Protect from cold, drying winds. (not available at present) Hardy to -5 to -8C

A medium-sized evergreen shrub of 2m x 2m, native of Chile and Patagonia with Berberis darwinii dark glossy-green, toothed leaves. Drooping clusters of bright orange, tinted red flowers in spring and early summer are followed by clusters of blue berries. Grow 2L £10.00 in any reasonable soil in sun or partial shade. Discovered by Charles Darwin and introduced by William Lobb.

Evergreen shrub of 1m x 1m of compact, dense, bushy habit. 3-pointed dark shiny green leaves, drooping clusters of bright orange, red-tipped flowers through spring Berberis darwinii ‘Compacta’ followed by blue-black berries. Plant in any reasonable soil in sun or partial shade.

A dwarf semi-evergreen shrub of 0.4 x 1m, native of Chile and Argentina. Slender, Berberis empetrifolia arching stems bearing narrow leaves with rolled edges. Berberis microphylla ‘Pygmaea’ A slow growing, dense evergreen shrub to 60cm, with dark green rounded leaves, grey beneath Thorns are much reduced. Yellow flowers in spring followed by 2L £7.50 purple berries in autumn. Grow in any moist, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade.

A compact, suckering, deciduous shrub native to Japan (1.3 x 1.3m). The oval, mid- Berberis sieboldii green leaves borne on reddish stems turn radiant orange and red in the autumn. Pale yellow flowers in April-May are followed by shiny orange-red fruits. Moist but well 2L £7.50 drained soil in full sun. Superb for autumn colour.

A neat, clump-forming evergreen perennial of 30cm x 45 cm. Tight rosettes of shiny, Bergenia ‘Beethoven’ deep-green leaves are topped by large dense clusters of white flowers with dark red calyces borne on tall red stems during April-June. A rare pine for mild gardens, sheltered site or conservatories. Native to Australia. A Callitris rhomboidea small columnar tree with delightful bright green or glaucous green foliage, branches divided into a mass of small, slender sprays up to Ht. 12m x S. 4m. Grow in a well 5L £20.00 drained soil. These plants are grown from seed of Tasmanian provenance without protection in Herefordshire.

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus A medium-sized evergreen shrub to 5m with glossy green foliage. Pure white flowers ‘Snow Flurry’ in carried in profusion in early summer. An excellent wall shrub, it can also be trained as a small tree in milder areas. Plant in a sunny position with shelter from cold winds 2L £7.50 in any reasonable free-draining soil.

A dense, hardy, evergreen shrub of 1.5m x 1.5m with upright branches bearing Ceanothus ‘Victoria’ dark green leaves. Clusters of deep blue flowersborne profusely during late spring and summer. Requires full sun, a well drained soil and some shelter from cold winds 2L £5.00

A beautiful, small, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub of 1m x 1.5m from the Himalaya Ceratostigma griffithii and W China that produces deep blue flowersthrough the autumn.
