6 Opening Run Weekend: April 23rd – 24th 2016

Following consultations with YND members, our suggestion is that: Saturday 23rd April: A road-based navigation and problem solving event be held in time to finish no later than 11pm somewhere in the Peak District, start/finish within about 30 miles of the Opening Run site. Dave Hodgson has volunteered himself and Danny (not sure if Danny knows about this!) to run it.

The deal would be that “Interesting” vehicles (not just Morgan Three- wheelers) can go in and the drivers go free. The passengers get an almost half price concession of £8 adult, £7 concession and £5 children. Those arriving in boring vehicles have to pay normal rates or £14, £11 and £8. Opening hours are 10am – 4.30pm. I haven’t negotiated the erection of a marquee. I don’t think there is any way of arranging a global payment like the one we had this year. The weekend takes place in one of the most scenic areas of the UK and for those who want to take advantage of other attractions there are Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock, Bakewell, and further north, Eyam (the “Plague Village) and Castleton with its many caverns. How about a Saturday afternoon North/South cricket/rounders match? Hotels haven’t been researched, but that could come later if required. Adrian

The sale of regalia clothing items is still on, although we are out of stock of medium t-shirts. I do have a couple of ladies size M/12 polo shirts in green or yellow for £5.

16 Albert Ball Memorial Run 7th May 2016 Ian Parkinson On May 7th 1917 Captain Albert Ball met his end after being shot down over France in a dogfight with Lothar Von Richtofen, brother of the famous Red Baron. Albert Ball was one of the first customers for the Morgan Tricycle and there are many pictures of him in his machine. A group of Morgan Three Wheeler owners are going to France to commemorate his death. The plan is to meet on Saturday 7th May at St Omer Aero Club which in 1917 was the home of the Royal Flying Corps 56 Squadron and the base for Albert Ball. From there we shall drive to Annoeullin ( about an hour) and trek across a field to the spot where Ball met his end. This is marked with a commemorative stone - in a way that the French do so well. A wreath will be laid there. It is a recommendation to stay in the town of St Omer for Saturday evening as there will be a get together for all Morgan Three Wheeler participants. Further details will follow, contact Ian Parkinson if interested to know more. http://www.motorpunk.co.uk/features/road-rallies/the-albert-ball- [email protected] memorial-blat-for-m3w-owners-saturday-may-7th/

18 Enlarged Magna Wheel Nut Holes Andy Butler

If anyone has a Dunlop Magna wheel that doesn’t seem to properly bolt on to the hub - and is considering using inserts or oversized flanged wheel nuts etc, check first for Bob Angell’s dreaded wheel nut hole cracking as shown in the photos. After thorough paint removal, the wheel nut hole can be inspected for circumferential cracking shown in the first photo. Drilling a couple of holes either side of the wheel nut hole resulted in the “wheel nut hole” falling out, and also reveals the further extent of cracking and delamination within the Magna hub. It’s not an easy task to properly restore a hub in this condition. Or even advisable …. Ed. Editors note: Do please read the various articles in this issue on the subject of oversize /elongated wheel not holes on Magna wheels. Members must come to their own conclusions bearing in mind that Morgan Three wheelers are at least 60 years old. There is a considerable variance of opinion or advice. The Club asserts that, as with all technical articles, it does not hold any responsibility for opinion or recommendations whatsoever. This also applies to the Technical Advisors.

22 This year we will be in the Southern parts of the province Friesland. The runs will be held on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th (Whit Sunday). One run is through the lake- district and the other run will bring us in old, little harbour city’s alongside the former Zuiderzee. We will travel mostly on small and quiet roads, have coffee and lunch now and then, and off again through rustic small towns and hamlets with three houses. There are places too, where you see nothing, but nature: lapwings and godwits, flying low over our threewheelers. We will make several stops: to see something inside a town, maybe to go into a museum, to eat and/or drink something and to meet each other. We have started our work for the days, but the fine tuning still has to be done and when it’s May we will be ready.

The most important thing is arranged: we have found a small hotel, which will be the epicentre for the sounds we produce. The hotel is a former stud- farm, lies away from the road and has around 30 rooms plus enough space for our threewheelers and (on a field in the woods behind the hotel) for tow cars and trailers.

Huisterheide 7, 8521 NC Sint Nicolaasga email:[email protected]). We have arranged a fixed price for the days and they gave us 18 rooms in option TILL MARCH 15th. Later: on availability. Bookings must be made DIRECTLY to the hotel. Please use the code: MTWC. Arranged prices for the weekend: Euro 165 for one person and Euro 330 for two persons, for not too much space. When two persons want a bigger room (closed veranda) they have to ask and pay Euro 390. Included are: room, breakfast, dinner/ buffet on 3 evenings and tax. Extra nights: Euro 51 for one person and Euro 77 or 92 for two persons, for room, breakfast and tax. The hotel can charge you for no show: see www.khn.nl/uvh-en and look under Individuals. Please inform us too (by e-mail: privé@vdboonfb.nl) when you have booked, so we know what we have to do for further arrangements. We are looking forward to meet you!! Paul says the last time he was out in the car was on Boxing Day 1968 with his Mum in the passenger seat - to the Belvedere Public House in Rotherham. Apparently, it's now a TESCO Express! DOL is now back in Edinburgh and was out over the New Year - going over the Forth Road Bridge (re-opened after a recent structural failure of the deck truss but due to be closed permanently to ordinary traffic once the new Queensferry crossing opens). He was passengered by Bert Craig - a former competitor in his own car in the Coronation Rally in the late 1950s! (It was renamed Top: Paul looking pleased, if a trifle cold but the East African Safari Rally in 1960, and happy. Who wouldn’t be delighted driving one’s later as the Safari Rally). The weather was threewheeler after a long period! exhilarating but different to East Above: Daughter Hannah - still smiling stoically Africa! after a certainly damp drive. Well done!
