Fernwood 2Night: The Great Lost American Comedy Fernwood 2Night is a talk show satire starring Martin Mull and Fred Willard. Before Alan Partridge and Larry Sanders quite a few years, Fernwood 2Night aired in 1977 when I was eleven years old and I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. Where I lived, it was at a station called Channel 53, a low rent UHF channel in Pittsburgh that looked like a dump of cheaply licensed television. Like the real version of the life of the fictional cheapo cable channel in SCTV, Channel 53 showed a mad low-budget mix of the Marx Brothers, WC Fields, Aussie women in prison soaps, Monty Python, Flash Gordon TV series, Avengers, Hammer Horror, Sergeant Bilko, My Favorite Martian, Jack Benny, Tom Baker-era Doctor Who shows, freakazoid televanist, Dr. Jean Scott It was a television paradise for some, for others - television hell. I really enjoyed it. That's where Fernwood 2Night comes in. Fernwood 2Night was a summer replacement series so that Mary Hartman's cast and crew could take a much-needed break from pumping out five weekly episodes. It was my favorite. and I would quit FIT if my parents are parents me to go somewhere when he was on. Like Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, it was for five nights a week, too, and I probably saw all of them. Martin Mull was brilliant as Bart Gimble, garth Gimble's twin brother, the caddish wife-beat character Mull portrayed by Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, who came to a terrible end (he was punctured on the Christmas tree!). It is implied that Bart has legal issues (which may or may not include a minor girl in Miami), so after the death of his brother, he is stuck working in the podunk town of Fernwood, where he feels smugly superior to everyone, especially his announcer/side kick Jerry Hubbard. played by Fred Willard. In the scene of the theft role that has defined her entire career is played by an ignorant white guy - is there anyone more Caucasian that Fred Willard? - Willard portrays what is quite possibly the dumbest, densest character in the entire history of television. I always thought that Willard was a comedic genius- blunt angles of his observations, so off the cuff and spontaneous, so real, and he was never funnier than him in that role. The main cast was rounded up by their dour band leader, Blessed Kyne (Frank De Vol) and his Myrtmakers. Fernwood's 2Night writers overlapped somewhat with Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman's crew, but by and large (I think) Harry Shearer seemed to be the lead writer, with other material provided by Mull and Willard and future right-wing shill Ben Stein. Alan Thicke, who must have been a hip, hip guy before the growing pains he even wrote for Richard Pryor-was a producer and the whole enchilada was of course the executive produced by the great . Guest appearances included Dabney Coleman, Kenneth Mars, Jim Varney and even Tom Waits in the second season, which was renamed America's 2Night show moved from the small town of Fernwood to the fictional city of Alta Coma, California, unfinished furniture by the world's capital (mostly so writers can stop coming up with tricks of why a particular celebrity would occur in Fernwood). The America 2Night series saw the likes of Gary Coleman, Vincent Price, Robin Williams, Peter Frampton, Stephen Allen, Paul Lind, Milton Burle, Burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston and many others make guest appearances. America 2Night was featured on the United Broadcasting System, or UBS, a network that puts U before BS. Aside from sporadic hits on TV Land in the early 90s, 130 episodes of Fernwood 2Night and America 2Night have rarely been seen since it originally aired. It's a comedy gold mine that has remained unused for a long time, as brilliant as the original SNL, if you ask me. Back in my days of misinformation I tried to license the show for a DVD release, but even Norman Lear's company had no idea who owned it (it turns out it was Sony that have done nothing to them). A couple of years ago, I was able to download the entire Fernwood 2Night series from a rare TV torrent tracker and I was in absolute TV sky again. It was created by Norman Lear and produced by Alan Thicke as a spin-off/summer replacement from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. It was a parody talk show hosted by Bart Gimble (Martin Mull) and assistant/narrator Jerry Hubbard (Fred Willard), complete with the stage group Happy Kyne and the Mirthmakers (featuring Frank De Vol as dour Happy Kane and Tommy Tedesco as one of the guitarists). Bart was allegedly garth Gimble's twin brother Mary Hartman. Like Mary Hartman, Fernwood 2 Night was set in the fictional small town of Fernwood, Ohio. The show is a satirical real talk show, and a kind of fare one would expect from locally produced, small-town, Midwestern American television programs. Famous actors usually appeared playing characters or tricks had to be written for a celebrity to appear as themselves. (In an episode in Fernwood, Tom Waits's tour bus broke down. After one season of Fernwood, the producers updated the show in 1978 as America 2-Night. In this second version, The Bart and Jerry Show moved from Fernwood to Southern California (particularly the fictional city of Alta Coma, the unfinished furniture capital of the world!) and broadcast nationally on the fictional NETWORK UBS (presumably a reference to the film network), whose slogan was We Put U before BS. Southern California's change has made it more believable for real celebrities to appear in the program Yourself. In 2001, Mull and Willard performed their roles in a stage and retrospective at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. The pair have also worked together on other projects, appearing together in the recent seasons of as a gay couple. The Fernwood/America 2-Night reruns aired on Nick at Nite from 1990 to 1993 and TV Land in 2002 as part of their TV Land Kitschen block, also hosted by Mall and Willard. The recurring characters are Mayor Merle Coleman's William W.D. Bud (Kenneth Mars), Fernwood Ambassador in general from the Chamber of Commerce and presumpting as an energy expert for the mayor. The prize invariably arrived wearing his elaborate chindodontic headgear, which was designed to fix his underbite. Tony Rolletti (Bill Kirkenbauer), an enthusiastic, at least slightly talented, lounge singer. Known for his particularly unstable wig. Susan Cloud,co-owner of the local butterfly Deli healthy food restaurant. Virgil Simms (Jim Varney), a local mechanic who offered car tips. Garth Gibble Sr. (Robert Williams), Bart's father, who was also a fun incompetent studio security guard. Almost always seen with his lethargic dog Louis. Lou Moffat (Lou Felder), a consumer expert who has always connected products distributed by Gimbleco Enterprises. Debbie Dunbar (Katie McCallen), Fernwood's slap girl. Lillian Dunbar (Bobby Tremayne), Debbie's outraged mother. Dr. Richard Osgood /Van Mut (Craig Richard Nelson) is a physician and researcher who has discovered that leisure suits cause cancer.
