CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

YEARS 5 TO 12

2017

Co-curricular Programme and Additional Activities Overview - 2017

A holistic education is the basis for a successful and balanced life. Holistic education is of the mind, body and spirit. Over the years, the students of the School who have excelled have thoroughly embraced the Co-curricular Programme that Newcastle Grammar School has to offer, which incorporates: • Sport • Performing Arts • Music • SATU, and • Intellectual / Creative

The purpose of education, and a foundation stone of the Newcastle Grammar School ethos, is the development of the whole person. For these reasons an educational programme must embody, as an essential element, activities that involve students beyond the classroom and foster the values that result from interaction and united effort. Such activities form a logical extension of the required and general curriculum as well as the elective or special curriculum.

The Co-curricular Programme at Newcastle Grammar School offers the opportunity for this to occur. Qualities such as team work, healthy lifestyle and leadership to name but a few can be gained by participation in the programme areas of Sport, Performing Arts, Music, Service and Adventure Training Unit (SATU) and Intellectual/ Creative.

Participation in the School Co-curricular Programme is compulsory for all students from Year 5 through to Year 12. Consequently, parents are encouraged to support the School in its mission to develop the whole individual by ensuring that their child/children are fully involved in the programme and attend all associated obligations of their chosen activity.

The minimum level of compulsory participation for ALL Year 5 to 12 Students is one (1) co- curricular activity.

1. Please be aware that it is possible, and strongly encouraged, that a student be involved in a combination of activities; eg Seasonal Sport, Performing Arts, Music, SATU or Intellectual / Creative. 2. The School reserves the right to decline the running of an activity should there be an insufficient number of students who nominate for registration. 3. Any student wishing to start a new Co-curricular activity in Year 10 or above will be required to demonstrate the required skill level prior to commencement. 4. Students will nominate their chosen selection at the end of 2016 ready for the commencement of school in 2017. 5. Once a child has registered for their Co-curricular activity they should not withdraw as this can have a major impact on teams. Therefore, please select wisely. It is better to see the staff and see if you can be added to activities later in the year as opposed to withdrawing and letting a team down. Note: Withdrawal post commencement of an activity may incur costs due to registration and pre-committed expenditure. 6. Please be aware where possible the School will be using outside expert coaches to develop the skills of all students. 7. This information is accurate as of 21 October 2016 and changes may occur before the commencement of these activities in 2017.

SKATEBOARDING: Boys/Girls Years 5-12 Skateboarding has enormous health benefits and is a popular activity. The program is run by Playgrounds Park staff who are trained in every facet of skateboarding. The focus is on fundamentals within skateboarding and individual goal setting depending on student’s abilities and level. Students work at progression and moving through skills with unique guidance and help from trained staff. The program is open to all levels and abilities and both male and female students. Over the course students will ride at the venue Playgrounds Park at Warners Bay and also at Newcastle Grammar School Basketball Court area. The court area is set up with a variety of jumps-quarter pipes, boxers, transitions and rails for the sessions at school.

Training: The sessions will be on every Wednesday afternoon from 3.15pm – 5.00pm and will start in Term 1 Week 6 and run till Week 6 Term 3.

Why try Skateboarding? • Provides flexibility • Offers full body workout • Physical Endurance • Teaches Precision • Improves Coordination: Skateboarding involves a lot of coordination between your eyes, legs, feet and arms. The more you skate, the better you’ll get at this. Precision and coordination are used throughout your life, whether you skate or not. When you improve these traits, you better your ability to do all sorts of different things from driving to climbing to multi-tasking. • Calorie Burning: Depending on the intensity of the skate, the average person will burn between 150-500 calories per hour. • Skills Transfer To Other Sports: including surfing, snowboarding, or wakeboarding. • Teaches consequences, practice, and patience: skateboarding provides a perfect opportunity for a young person to take calculated risks in a controlled environment, with very real and immediate consequences if skills are not executed properly. Similar to martial arts, skateboarding skills and fundamentals must be learned and mastered over time with practice and patience, (unlike the instant gratification provided by television and video games). • You learn to fall: Prevention of future injuries is one of the most beneficial things that skateboarding has to offer in terms of health. When you skate, you learn how to avoid falling (if possible), and you also learn how to fall correctly. Skateboarders naturally get better at knowing where to place their feet and their hands as they progress with their skating. • Stress Relief: Any physical activity is considered to be good for relieving stress. Skateboarding can help you take your mind off things. Alternatively, it can also help you think clearly about things. Skateboarding seems to bring things into perspective and allows you to feel as though you’re more in control of other aspects of your life. • Overall Health: As with all forms of physical exercise, skateboarding can reduce or eliminate your risk for many health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Skateboarding can also reduce your risk for coronary heart disease by reducing your triglyceride levels and increasing your “good” cholesterol.

File: Co-curricular Handbook_2017_5-12.docx Last Update: 31 October 2016

All equipment needed for skateboarding will be provided by Playgrounds staff including helmets and skateboards. It is recommended that students acquire their own equipment eventually for individual practice.

TAEKWON-DO: Boys/Girls Years 5-12

General Information: Many students have progressed through the grading system and the discipline and tuition the students receive is first class. This sport gives the opportunity for participants to train as individuals in a group setting. All levels train together and work on their technique and patterns to achieve belts at grading times. Although all participants train together, the programme is designed for students to work at their own level to achieve their own personal goals.

The definition of RHEE TAEKWONDO involves dynamic techniques of unarmed combat for self-defensive purposes, combining the skilled application of powerful punches, flying kicks, blocks, dodges and interceptions. The Rhee Taekwondo practitioner uses well-trained hands, arms and feet to effect the rapid destruction of any attacker.

The discipline, mental training and varied techniques of Rhee Taekwondo also provide the grounds for engendering in the practitioner a strong sense of humility and resolve.

INTELLECTUAL/ CREATIVE ACTIVITIES

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Programme: (Boys/Girls ) Years 7-12 Direct application to Mrs Martin

The Artist in Residence Programme commenced at NGS in 2015 initially as an extra-curricular activity however during that time it became a co-curricular option. This programme is dedicated to teaching the students the benefits of ‘thinking outside of the square’ through creative painting and creative ideas. The activity is available to all students they do not have to be Visual Arts students – anyone interested in creativity, painting and Visual Arts is welcome.

Please Note: Students will be required to commit to the Programme for a minimum of one semester.

Venue: Hill Campus Visual Arts Rooms

Classes: Monday afternoons – 3.15pm – 5.00pm

Class Size: Limited to 14 students

Eligibility: Years 7 – 12

Cost: Approximately $250 per term. This provides all students with two canvases (for a semester), all necessary equipment –such as oil and acrylic paints, and expert tuition from Ms Sophie Mill.

Sophie Mill is an internationally recognised contemporary artist and author. Ms Mill has been a practicing contemporary artist for over 20 years with back-to-back exhibitions in Australia, Italy and the USA. Ms Mill studied with the Billy Blue School of Art, The National Art School, Julian Ashton Art School and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York.

Each student will develop an understanding of the philosophy of being an artist. That is, it is the job of the artist to define, decide and shape his/her artwork. The class covers many dimensions about language, perspective, spatial awareness, and the philosophy of painting. Ms Mill uses the Socratic method of teaching to enhance thought patterns, personality and the ability of the students to investigate their limits. Through deliberate questioning they are encouraged to think from different perspectives and therefore develop the process of decision-making.

If students wish to select this activity they must apply directly to Mrs Martin. This may be done via email or in person at the Visual Arts Staffroom.
