The Tbilisi Ioseb Grishashvili History Museum has been in existence for over a century now. Throughout this period, numerous collections and tens of thousands of artifacts have been assembled and housed by the Museum, illustrating multifarious aspects of the material and spiritual lives of the multiethnic city inhabitants and those with diverse confessions. The visitors are able to admire the revived uniqueness and zest of a city located at the crossroads of the East and the West, and the inimitable synthesis that is achieved owing to the crossover of the European and Asian cultures. The Tbilisi History Museum was founded in 1910 St. Teodosi Chernogovel's Church by the city self-government and was originally named the “Tiflis Municipal Museum”. This is documented in on the Museum’s initiative the works of art portraying the “Tiflis Municipal Museum Program” issued by the the Tbilisi themes were thereafter produced by the self-government, which makes reference to the idea talented painters such as Alexander Tsimakuridze, of establishing a municipal museum alongside listing Davit Kakabadze, Franz Roubaud, Boris Fogel, et al. the activities dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the The first Museum executive was the City Principal Tbilisi self-government, primarily aimed at promoting himself. Many years that followed have seen the remarkable success in terms of gathering the displays, and the works housed by the Tbilisi Municipal Museum were replenished with thousands of artifacts and outstanding collections. Consequently, the Museum’s domain expanded, and in 1943 it acquired the status of the Tbilisi historical and ethnographic museum. Throughout 1925-1936 the Museum was located within the former Feodosyev Church (chess club thereafter), whereas after 1936 up until 1984 its long- time premises were on the Salalaki range (former 11 Komsomol Avenue). Nikoloz Badriashvili further recruited the well-known masters of scale modelling (Mikheil Mansvetashvili, Leon Nabatov, Saakyan, Barikin), who were instructed and commissioned to design the scale models of the demolished buildings, workshops, shops and other facilities with simple materials (wood, veneer, cardboard, shingle, etc.), hence reviving the old Tbilisi appearance and conveying to us the picturesque city looks. “Karvasla”, “Caravanserai” or the “Inn” was primarily a large facility characteristic to the medieval Georgian cities, which provided accommodation to the merchant travelers, their animals, merchandise and transport. Some parts of the caravanserais housed the commercial workshops. In the earliest years of the Museum’s existence, the archaeological materials from the Tbilisi sites were recovered on a random basis. The reconnaissance works in the Tbilisi area commenced in 1954-1955, which necessitated the stationary archaeological excavations. Since 1956, the Tbilisi History Museum has been carrying out excavations on various Tbilisi sites first in conjunction with the archaeological expeditions of the History Institute, and then independently. These sites included Dedatsikhe, Erekle II Square, Botanical Garden, Shavteli Street, Gldani, Saburtalo, 26 Commissars, Samghebro Street, 300 Aragveli Garden, Avlabari, Balneological Resort, Leselidze Street, Abanotunabi, Meidan, Forty Martyrs Church, etc. At present, the Museum’s Archaeology Fund houses up to thirty collections, containing materials of the Late Bronze Age, Late Antiquity and those of the early to late Medieval period. The Archaeology Fund of the Tbilisi History Museum houses more than 25,000 works. 20

Precious Metal Fund

Georgia boasts the ancient traditions of working with precious metals. The Tbilisi dwellers have long used the silverworks of high artistic merit, which served as the everyday commodity alongside having the pure aesthetic value. The interactions among the various ethnocultures and influences contributed to the creation of the diverse urban culture in Tbilisi – a city located at the junction of the trade routes, which later became the Transcaucasus administrative hub as it subsequently came into contact with Russia. This is undeniably illustrated by the silver collection held at the Museum, which contains a series of items of both Georgian and foreign, including Daghestani, Armenian and Russian provenance. Working with silver has long been a distinctive skill in Tbilisi, as evidenced by the Silver Street (Vertskhlis Kucha) where the silver craftsmen used to work, and which still retains its name. The have long used a series of techniques of working with silver and gold, such as filigree, niello, grenetis (“tsvara”), “zarnishi” (cold inlay), gilding. All of these techniques were applied in making the works displayed in the Museum. The Museum primarily exhibits the silver-plated weapons, like daggers, sabres, guns, knives and powder flasks dating back to the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The luxurious weapons and belt daggers were used to point to the high social class of their holders, although the silver belts were also considered as the essential dress attributes for those at the low end of the social hierarchy, like artisans and merchants. The Museum also displays household and ritual silver tableware, adornments, other small objects for household use or religious worship, etc. 28

Woodwork Fund

The Woodwork Fund contains household objects, furniture, scale models, musical instruments, etc. Wood is a rather easy-to-access material, and Georgia has long boasted the traditions of woodwork. All households owned the wooden objects of some sort, like the various types of boxes, chests, tables, cradles, combing devices, spinning wheels, etc. Included in the Fund are the scale models of the Tbilisi buildings. During the 1920s-30s of the 20th century, the Soviet authorities embarked on the sweeping construction, which completely altered the way the old Tbilisi looked, and numerous city districts and buildings eventually fell prey to the construction. The Museum’s administration assembled a team of the well-known masters of scale modelling such as Leon Nabatov, Mikheil Mansvetashvili, Barikin, as these individuals had very good recollections of the old city shops, restaurants, workshops and dwelling houses. By using very simple materials such as wood, veneer, cardboard, shingle, glue, plasticine, etc. they recreated the scale models of the Tbilisi buildings, conveying to us the picturesque city looks. The Woodwork Fund also houses a collection of the Georgian, Oriental and Western European musical instruments. 44

Metalware Collection

Most of the materials preserved in the Metalware Collection are of the Georgian-Iranian provenance and date back to the 18th and 19 centuries, while the materials of the Russian and European provenance are of a later period and date back to the 19th and 20th centuries. The presence of the Iranian items in the collection points to the vibrant political, economic and cultural relations that had existed between the two countries for centuries. Subsequently, as Georgia became part of the Russian Empire, the city was increasingly exposed to the Russian and European influences. The materials preserved in the Metalware Collection are primarily made from copper and brass and include household, decorative and ritual implements and utensils, like flagons, vases, ibriks, mugs, copper jugs, braziers, baking molds, samovars, lanterns, lamps, candlesticks, etc. Some of the items bear inscriptions in the Georgian, Persian and Russian languages that trace their provenance. The majority of the implements preserved in the Metalware Collection includes the Georgian utensils characterized by simplicity, refined shapes and peculiar treatment techniques, giving them uniqueness that has long been ascribed to the prominent embossment traditions in Georgia. The Iranian utensils are distinguished by their outer decorative treatment. The Iranian artisans used to apply diverse ornamental patterns and various treatment methods, such as stamping, incision, scratching, openwork cutting, painting with organic dyes, etc. Most of the displays in the Metalware Collection are primarily acquired from or donated by individuals. 54

Ceramics Collection

The Household Items Fund houses the ceramics collection alongside metalware, porcelain ware and glassware. Tbilisi was the oldest hub for manufacturing and utilizing ceramics, as evidenced by the archaeological finds recovered from the Tbilisi sites. The ceramics collection contains the ceramic utensils manufactured in the 18th and 19th centuries primarily at the domestic utility centers. These objects continued to serve as the main articles of consumption for the Georgian households. The ceramic ware preserved at the Museum includes both the terracotta and glazed ceramic works having different household applications. The terracotta articles were used to store water and wine, whereas the glazed ceramics were mostly for marinades and jams. The Museum’s repository houses the Matsoni (sour plain yoghurt) jars, haricot bean pots, dosing utensils, jugs, egg-shaped pitchers (Qvevri), ewers, etc. Among the notable pieces is the ritual utensil “Marani”, i.e. drinking vessel, designated for wedding ceremonies for the bride and bridegroom. The “Marani” was designed on the principle of the shared vessels, and symbolized the newlyweds’ sharing of joy and grief throughout their future life.

Numismatics Fund

The Numismatics Fund of the Tbilisi History Museum has been in existence since 1937. It displays the coins acquired from or donated by individuals, as well as those recovered by archaeological expeditions organized by the Tbilisi History Museum and the Archaeological Research Center throughout various years. These archaeological finds shed light to how money had been circulating over the centuries in and outside Tbilisi, what the city residents’ economic status was, and how they connected and interacted with the outside world. The Numismatics Fund houses more than 1,000 Georgian, Oriental, European and Russian bronze, copper and silver coins and medals. The earliest pieces include the Roman coins of the 1st century BC, while the latest are those coined at the Tbilisi Mint in the first half of the 19th century. Alongside the coins, the Numismatics Fund has continuously been replenished by the memorial medals, orders, badges and breast insignia acquired from or donated by the Tbilisi residents. Included in the notable pieces are the collections donated by the well- known scientist and numismatist Davit Kapanadze, and those by the Jewish Historic-Ethnographic Museum. 74

Soft Items Fund

The Museum’s Soft Items Fund houses the collections of garments, footwear, clothing accessories, embroideries, fur and leather articles, carpets, rugs, etc. There are over 1,600 displays in this collection, most of which have been acquired from or donated by individuals. Included in the collection are the Georgian national male and female costumes and their accessories (forehead bands, Lechakis and Baghdads – the varieties of the Georgian female headdresses, elongated sleeve outfits, plastrons, girdles, shank straps, Chokha bullet holders, etc.), as well as the national garments worn by various ethnic minorities residing in Tbilisi (Kurds and Jews), European dresses and accessories (laces, gloves, adornments, etc.) Most of the carpet items (carpets, rugs, mat bags, saddlebags, striped woven rugs, etc.) date back to the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The carpets from various places and regions and of diverse provenance were quite common in Tbilisi. The Museum houses the Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Kurdish and Karabakhian items. The Soft Items Fund also contains the artisans’ union (the so-called “Amkars”) banners that belong to the various professional associations and date back to the 19th-20th centuries. 112

Panoply Fund

The Panoply Fund houses both the old weaponry and those that were in mainstream use during World War II. The weapons were of vital importance to Georgians, as the country constantly stood on the defensive against its enemies. The Fund contains cold arms (daggers, sabres, knives), as well as firearms (pistols, powder flasks, guns, machine guns, cannons, etc.). The sabres, daggers, pistols and guns mostly date back to the 19th century, whereas the powder flasks trace to the second half of the 18th century. The Fund primarily holds the Tbilisian, Caucasian, Russian and Oriental weaponry collection.

Yuri Zaretsky Collection

Tbilisi and the Tbilisi lifestyle have often inspired various visitors, and many of them have cherished the city as their native location ever since their first encounter. One of such visitors was Yuri Zaretsky, a Russian national born in Zaporozhye and the renowned ballet master, choreographer of many prominent Georgian plays and films of the 1960s-80s. Yuri Zaretsky was also well known for collecting works of art. In 1985 (several days before his death) he bequeathed the collection he had been assembling for 30 years to Tbilisi, his beloved city. The collection contains the artifacts of the Georgian, Russian and European provenance, like the European furniture of various styles, works of fine art – paintings, graphics, icon painting, miniature, small plastic arts; works of applied and decorative art – porcelain, crystal, glass, fraget and bronze vases and candlesticks.
