The club changed to Keilor Road Uniting Church Badminton Club in 1977 with the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia.
Gordon was President from its inception in 1971 until April 2010 – a total of 39 years. The club originally joined the Diamond Valley Badminton Association but later moved across to the Western Suburbs Badminton Association in 1984.
Gordon regularly advertised in local newspapers (even as far as Melton and in the late 1990s the Vietnamese papers) to keep the club functioning and attract people to Badminton. All players were welcome to at Niddrie High School hall on Saturdays, where Gordon played with the beginners to give encouragement and provide instruction on how to play Badminton.
During the years between 2005 & 2010, Gordon took over the compilation and running of the club, organising teams and players. At its peak in 2006, Gordon ran and looked after 26 teams, regularly turning up at the Altona Badminton Centre four nights a week to ensure players turned up and were ok to play the next week.
Gordon was most inclusive in bringing players from new arrival communities into the association, in particular the Vietnamese Community.
Gordon has made a significant contribution to local badminton in the Western Suburbs and the Keilor Road Badminton Club would not have existed for so long without Gordon’s devotion to this sport that he loves so dearly.

Just about every Friday night you will find Wilma overseeing the nightly registration of players, getting the teams together for the nightly competition and chasing up players for their matches. Wilma has always been prepared to help out in any role asked of her and has ably supported some of our key junior co-ordinators such as Alan & Hilary Black and Jerry & Natalie Cronin. Wilma began her playing at the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Williamstown and still can be found each Monday morning playing with the Western Suburbs Ladies social group Wilma comes from a badminton background – her parents, May and Jim Thomas held several key positions on the committee including treasurer, vice president and match secretary in the mid 1960’s. Don considered the working week to be Monday to Friday and worked the weekends as a volunteer. During the Christmas breaks, Don shampooed the carpet, polished the linoleum and cleaned the interior and exterior windows. About 18 years ago, Don decided that the 12 courts was too much for him, so he just came in daily to do the foyer and toilet area, however often lent a hand in the stadium as well. Don had just turned 90 years old when he retired as our cleaner in November 2013 and in all the years between 1985 and 2013, missed just one day of work, an amazing record.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2019 started with our 13th Under 13 Carnival, with five teams competing in the Interstate Series, which was won by Victoria Rebels who beat Victoria Demons 7-3; in the Regional Teams Challenge, Infinity Warriors 1 defeated Badminton Academy of Victoria and in a new group, The Regional Boys Challenge; Infinity Black defeated Pro Badminton Academy by just four aces.
In February, we received notification from Michelle Rigg, our Head Coach, advising of her resignation. Thanks, Pauline Martin for stepping into the breach and becoming the Interim Head Coach, while the Committee set about advertising for and then interviewing a number of applicants. Finally, at the end of May, Nelson Oon accepted the position of Head Coach for WSBA. Welcome to WSBA, Nelson.
Our Pennant Competition continues under some difficulties, with just four sections, A Doubles Grade, C Singles Grade, C2 Doubles Grade and C3 Doubles Grade. “Commitment” seems to be the major issue, and a lack of fill-ins make it extremely difficult to find fill-in players. Of course, all sports seem to be having the same problem!
Our Socials are well supported, with many players buying our Loyalty Card.
We, again, hosted a number of Badminton Oceania and Badminton Victoria Sanctioned Tournaments – Yonex Altona Open & Graded, Altona Veterans Tournament, Australian Para Badminton Championships, Under 15 State Titles and Altona Masters, The Australian Junior International, WSBA D Grade Tournament, Altona Junior U13 & 17 Selection Tournament and in December, we have an U9 and U11 Tournament.
On request we also hosted – Inglesia Ni Christo Unity Tournament, two KSIJ events, Victorian Police and Emergency Services Games, Inter Club Friendly Tournament, Goodbye Winter Tournament, a PMI Corporate Tournament, and the STEFM Teams Event, with four Churches competing this year - Syro Malabar Catholic Church continued their unbeaten run of 8 years.
David Cutroni was selected in the Victorian Strikers Team to compete in the Clendinnen Shield carnival held at MSAC in February 2019.
WSBA entered teams in three age groups in the Victorian Junior Teams Championships, which was held in Bendigo on the 21st & 22nd September. Thanks to Nelson for coordinating players and parents. Thanks to the parents who offered their support as Team Managers for the weekend.
Thanks to the Committee for their support this year and thanks to our cleaner, Ricky and all our Casual Staff who are the first port of call for our customers. Thanks to our sponsors and supporters, Epsilon Australia and Hobsons Bay City Council. Badminton Victoria, Badminton Australia and Badminton Oceania
Our new website is well up and running, have a look at www.wsbaonline.com
Thanks Ron for your work and volunteering commitments for WSBA.

MANAGER’S REPORT
This year has been a difficult year financially, due to the competition from rival stadia within the district. The WSBA Committee is looking at ways to increase income and rein in expenditure however this has been a difficult exercise.
In November 2018 we had our new LED panels installed in the stadium. This has led to a more even and consistent light coverage across the court area. We were fortunate to receive a $5,500 grant from the Federal Government under the Stronger Communities Program.
Early in the year, we applied for a grant to assist in the hosting of the Australian Junior International 2019. Just before the event, we were notified that our $5,500 application was successful.
We have had a very busy year of hosting tournaments and carnivals. A quick look at the tournament results in the latter part of the annual report shows just how many tournaments we have run
The Australian Junior International tournament which was played over four days was the highlight of the year. We had players here from New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka along with over fifty competitors from around Australia. This event requires a lot of coordination with picking up international players from airports, busing them between the stadium and their accommodation, organizing umpires, linespeople and feeding the players and officials. The standard of play was very strong and provided a lot of very close and exciting games.
I want to again thank my team of casual staff who work at the stadium. During the year they have included Marlis, Raymond, Mason, Alex, Mary, Traceyn, Pauline, Simone Rahul, Richard and Xavier - I really appreciate their service.
I would also like to thank the committee for their support and assistance throughout the year. I would especially like to thank our President Pat Daw, who gives up so much of her time to the Association. This year marks the thirtieth year that Pat has been President of the Western Suburb Badminton Association.

Each Monday morning we have a group of ladies come in to play socially from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Cost is $7.00 per lady. We do not have a competition with teams – just social play with lots of fun and laughter. Ladies are welcome to come whenever they can. The standard can vary week to week along with the ages of the players. During the year, we organised a lunch to raise funds for the anti-cancer council. Any lady who would like to join in would be very welcome.
WEDNESDAY MORNING MIXED
This year we have had a growing group of beginner to intermediate players attend our mixed social session on Wednesday mornings. Cost is $7.00 for each player and covers court hire and feather shuttles. With three or four courts in play at any one time, there are plenty of opportunities to play. Time is Wednesday mornings from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Everyone welcome.
SUNDAY EVENING MIXED SOCIAL BADMINTON
We have seen a steady number of players attending our Sunday evening mixed social. It kicks off at 6:30pm every Sunday afternoon and goes through until 9:00pm. Cost is $13.00 per player and this covers feather shuttles and court hire. The numbers each week are fantastic with around 30-40 players attending each week. This has been a great source of fill-in players for our pennant competition and everyone participating has a great time. No need to book – just turn up and play.
TUESDAY EVENING MIXED SOCIAL BADMINTON
We have seen a steady number of players attending our Sunday evening mixed social. It kicks off at 7:30pm every Tuesday and goes through until 10:00pm. Cost is $13.00 per player and this covers feather shuttles and court hire. The numbers each week are fantastic with around 30-40 players attending each week. This has been a great source of fill-in players for our pennant competition and everyone participating has a great time. No need to book – just turn up and play.
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON PICKLEBALL
We have just recently started a Pickleball social group which plays from 1:00pm – 3:00pm each Wednesday afternoon. Pickleball is a bat tennis type game that can be played on a badminton sized court. Cost is $7.00 per player. Everyone welcome.
