Roberts

The Church Devoonal During Lent we’ve been examining different aspects of the Church, and what it means to be Catholic. We’ve explored the Church praccal, missionary, hierarchical, and dogmac. We conclude by focusing on the Church devoonal. Our English word “devoon” is derived from the Lan word devovere, which means “to dedicate oneself by a vow,” or “to sacrifice oneself.” It implies the giving of oneself in love totally to another person, or to a cause, or to God. We refer to those who have great devoon to God as “devout.” When we think of the devoonal life of our Church, we usually think in terms of the many devoons we enjoy as Catholics. For instance, one of our greatest and most universal devoons is the . During Lent, we also turn to the Staons of the Cross. As Catholics, we have the Liturgy of the Hours, chaplets, novenas, and countless ways of expressing our Mass Intentions devoon to God. But it is important to recognize that true devoon does not begin with Monday, March 30 our devoon to God; it begins with God’s devoon to us. We did not In thanksgiving for blessing first love God, or even know Him. God first loved us, and has revealed received for the Dione family Himself fully to us in His Son, Jesus Christ. Again, we review the Lan word devovere: “to dedicate oneself by a vow, to sacrifice oneself.” By Tuesday, March 31 sending His Son to us, God proved His devoon to us. By coming into Paul Henn the world, Jesus became the most solemn vow of God to us by joining our human nature to His divine nature. In Jesus, God and human Wednesday, April 1 beings are one: and that vow (the Incarnaon) is unbreakable. Penny Hipskind This vow was rafied when Jesus entered into Jerusalem on Holy Thursday, April 2 Week. Jesus had gone to Jerusalem for the major Jewish feasts every The Parish of St. Joan of Arc year of His life on earth. Now, He would enter one last me for the Feast of Passover, where He Himself would become the lamb of Friday, April 3 sacrifice for the salvaon of the world. At the end of the Passover Intention of Mollie Smith meal, Jesus established a New Covenant in His own blood. Anything sealed in blood is solemn and sacred. In the Eucharist Jesus gave us a Saturday, April 4 truly special devoonal, where God’s devoon to us, and our devoon Jo Ann Blackwell to God, are celebrated in one and the same acon. The Eucharist is the greatest devoonal on earth! Sunday, April 5 Leland Johnson But the devoon of Jesus would go well beyond the acons of the Last Supper, for those acons pointed to what He would do the next day upon the cross. There, Jesus would show the full extent of His devoon to us, and to His Father, by sacrificing His life for us. It was

2 | St. Joan of Arc Church | 2 Thoughts from Fr. Roberts not the nails which held Jesus to the wood of the cross, but rather, His devoon. Another word for devoon is love. And that love of God, revealed fully upon the cross, would not end there; for the purpose of that great act of devoon was to open to us eternal life with the Father in Heaven. For the purpose of devoon is to restore all things, according to God’s purpose. So, Jesus would rise from death on the third day, as a promise (a vow) that where He has gone before us, we will one day follow. We possess the fulfillment of that promise even now, by faith. Faith is necessary for a devoonal life. Our devoons here on earth are ways we share in the devoonal life of the Saints already in Heaven. And, they are ways we stay connected to God’s devoon to us in Christ. In our devoons, God comes to meet us, and we come to meet God. Our devoons are not ends in themselves, but lead us to the fullness of life with God in Heaven. May the love of God, poured out to us in Jesus Christ, fill our hearts always! Fr. Roberts From The Heart of the New Evangelization, A Parish Manual for the New Evangelization by Fr. Guy Roberts. If we are to be transformed in Christ, and true evangelists for Christ, we must open our hearts to Him. Jesus says to us in Revelaon 3:20, “Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” To have the courage to open the door requires faith in God’s mercy, this faith is our total belief in the Gospel. How does your belief in the Gospel affect your everyday life? (p. 20) St. Joan of Arc Parish Mission Statement: St. Joan of Arc is a community gathered in Jesus Christ. We welcome all people and provide them opportunities to know God, grow in faith, and use their gifts to serve others. Through Word, Sacrament, Prayer, and Service, we honor our tradition as we extend our ministry to each new generation.

What is this all about?

It is about the Divine Mercy of Christ! It is about trusting that God loves you beyond all comprehension and that He is there for you, no matter what you are facing, even if it does not make sense right now. It is about embracing God’s will for us, which is love and mercy itself. What is the Divine Mercy Chaplet? The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a short (seven minute) prayer that is said using regular rosary beads. Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to Saint Faustina Kowalska in 1935 and taught her the prayer. While it can be prayed at any time, it is recommended that you pray it at 3 p.m. , the hour of mercy, when Christ died on the cross for our sins. What is the Divine Mercy Novena? Anovenais typically nine days of prayer in preparation for a celebration of a feast day, in this case Divine Mercy Sunday, which takes place the Sunday following Easter. On each day of this novena, beginning with Good Friday, you will bring to the heart of Jesus a different group of souls to immerse them in his ocean of mercy. How will I know what to do? There are many prayer guides online including various resources on Formed. You can also sign up to receive a daily email for the duration of this novena through PrayMoreNovenas.com St. Joan of Arc Church | 7 SCREEN PRINT • EMBROIDERY • PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS SPIRITWEAR AND ATHLETIC APPAREL SUPPLIER www.distinctimages.net 317.613.4413 • Business & Individual Income Tax Preparation & Planning • Federal & State Tax Notice Assistance Lam Law Office Dr. Angeline McLean IRISH MECHANICAL Dr. Rob Harper SERVICES, INC • Accounting/Quickbooks Assistance Dr. Courtney Gonzales 7008 East 43rd Street www.collierandcolliercpa.com Carlos Federico Lam Brad Subrin Indianapolis, IN 46226 P: 317.250.4948 F: 317.947.0747 Attorney / Abogado 30 First Street SW 317-294-9875 Jeff & Andrea Collier Hablo Inglés y Español Carmel Arts & Design District 317-721-LAM1(317-721-5261) • [email protected] (317) 848-9081 www.irishmechanicalservices.com St. Joan of Arc Parishioners Wood Furniture Repair Chairs A Specialty of the ChairMan
