Doctor of Nursing Practice student Jessica Kensky and her husband, Patrick Downes, spoke April 17 at the inaugural School of Nursing Lecture, held at Partners HealthCare. Kensky lost both her legs, and Downes one leg, while attending the 2013 . The audience of nurses from General Hospital (where Kensky works), and MGH Institute faculty and nursing students, also watched the documentary Marathon: The Patriots Day Bombing that told the couple’s story of rehabilitation and recovery from their injuries. The couple in April released the children’s book called Rescue & Jessica: A Life- Changing Friendship, a fictional account of a young girl who deals with losing her two legs. The Institute celebrated student leadership on April 20 at the annual Student-Leader Appreciation Dinner. IHP Hosts Women Leaders

Students took advantage of a plethora of stress- reduction activities leading up to finals, including interacting with therapy dogs, coloring, puzzles, origami, yoga, lawn games, and a Nap Nook. The initiatives were coordinated by Student and Alumni Services and Library and Instructional Design, and Academic Support Counselors Mike Boutin and Steve Ciesielski.

Team IHP Finishes 2018 Marathon More than 70 women from across the nation came to the IHP for the 2018 Leadership Women America program. The morning session, “Interprofessional Education + Communication = Improved Health Care” featured Partners HealthCare Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Dani Monroe (speaking), CSD Professor and researcher Tiffany Hogan, and President Emerita Jan Bellack. The program was hosted by President Paula Milone-Nuzzo.

Advocating for Social Justice

Two alumni and a current student braved the driving rain and completed the 2018 Boston Marathon for Team IHP. The runners were (L-R) Meredith Garey Anand, DPT '04, finishing in 3:39:40, Elizabeth Lee, CSD '19, finishing in 4:57:36, and Kristin Cunningham, DPT '17, finishing 4:03:36. They raised more than $15,000 to support several IHP-related causes. The fourth and final Schwartz Center Educational Rounds of the academic year was held on April 2. Professor Diane Smith, PhD, OTR/L, facilitated a Philanthropy Week at the IHP discussion on “Advocating for Social Justice” with student speakers Stephanie Campbell, OTD ’18, and Emily Thatcher, MPAS ’18. Stephanie discussed her work as a Schweitzer Fellow running a 10-week health literacy program for at-risk students in Chelsea. Emily talked about her efforts creating a health literacy class for adults in Chelsea, and how she found herself serving a population that was displaced from Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria, and in need of such basics as housing and winter coats. The theme of the 2017-2018 Schwartz Rounds was "Social Determinants of Health and Health Care Delivery."

The Office of Development hosted its inaugural Philanthropy Week April 16-20 to increase student awareness about how philanthropy affects their education. In addition to cheering on Team IHP at the Boston Marathon, the office hosted Donuts with Development where students could ask questions about fundraising; Thank a Donor Day in which students wrote thank you notes to IHP donors; Amazon Smile information, where people can make donations to the IHP while they shop; and Class Gift Campaign Day during which graduating students raised funds for the Institute. The week was highlighted when the IHP raised $11,000 via 82 online donations, far surpassing (L-R) Emily Thatcher, MPAS '18, Sarah Norris, OTD '19, the 50 needed to successfully unlock a giving Assistant PT Professor Caitlin Fitzgerald, challenge by President Paula Milone-Nuzzo in which Katia Stie, SLP '19, and Scott McIntyre, DEN '18. she would match the first $5,000. IHP students traveled to University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to compete in the Clarion National Case Competition on April 14. The students were provided Raising Sexual Assault Awareness with a case created by Clarion involving two individuals residing in West Virginia who had opioid overdoses. They were charged with completing a root- cause analysis of the state of the opioid crisis in West Virginia and health care in rural areas, as well as providing a comprehensive set of recommendations to address the issues identified.

CPD Interprofessional Conference

Students, faculty, and staff participated in National Denim Day on April 25. Participants pledged to learn more about sexual assault and wear denim, or denim pins provided by the Office of Student and Alumni Services, to show their support for survivors. “Leading Across Professions: Rethinking Leadership for Learning & Care,” brought 125 attendees together for a two-day conference on April 5- 6, hosted by the Office of Continuing and Professional Celebrating OT Month Development. Speakers included Bruce Avolio, PhD, University of Washington Foster School of Business, who used the as a case study to focus on the differences between leading during crisis and leading every day; Donna Chrobot- Mason, PhD, University of Cincinnati Center for Organizational Leadership, who discussed using boundary-spanning leadership skills to bring people together across professions; and Robert Kegan, PhD, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, who led the group through an awareness-building exercise to understand their individual immunity to change. Panel groups included MGH Institute and MGH’s Interprofessional Dedicated Education Unit (IPDEU), (L-R) Erin Janstzen ’20 and Natalya Jenney ’19 Mount Auburn Hospital’s Interprofessional Leadership Academy, Center for Medical Simulation, and MGH Palliative Care. Attendees represented 35 institutions, 15 professions and 11 different states, including California, Texas, Maryland and New Jersey.

IHP Wins Two ECO Awards

The IHP Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) hosted a sensory table and bake sale several times in April to commemorate Occupational Therapy Month.

IHP won the Small University Spotlight Award and a Silver ECO Award at the massRIDES Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) Awards on April 18. The school was recognized for exceeding expectations in bringing green commuting options to the workplace, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and supporting strong local and regional economies by offering and incentivizing smart, sustainable transportation choices. Chief Information and Facilities Officer Denis Stratford noted, "This is a great recognition for the Institute’s sustainability initiatives through which the Campus Services staff continues to provide students, faculty, and staff with alternative modes of transportation for their daily commute."

Each May, the Institute recognizes National Nurses Second Annual Literacy Week (May 6–12) and Better Hearing and Speech Conference Held Month to acknowledge the members of our nursing and communication sciences and disorders communities for their dedication to patient care and contributions to the health of our nation and across the world.

Run in the Battle of Bunker Hill Road Race

The Institute will sponsor the registration fee for up to 20 student and employee runners who want to run the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club's 50th annual Battle of Bunker Hill Road Race on Sunday, June 10. Interested runners should print, fill out, and sign the race registration form using team name “Team IHP” then return the form to Andrew Criscione by Friday, May 11. The race will start and finish by the Boys and Girls Club at 60 High Street near the Bunker Hill IHP hosted its second annual literacy conference, Monument. "Language and Literacy Development and Disorders: Neuroscience, Interventions, and Individual Differences," on April 28. Faculty Joanna Christodoulou and Tiffany Hogan (pictured) taught Merit Scholarship for High School parents, educators, and researchers how to use an Seniors from Charlestown individual differences model for selecting evidence- based assessments and interventions.
