This could be one of the main ples. Women sometimes refer to their Houston, Tx. 713/523-0213 , 710 Pacific Street , TWT JANUARY 13 _ JANUARY 19 1995 PAGE 13 souses as their "husbands" and men r~fer to their spouses as their "wives." There are many more factors that create substantial differences between same-sex relationships and opposite-sex relation- ships. These differences affect beliefs, values, psychodynamics, attitudes and behavior. Lesbians have been spiritually and sex- ually abused in a way which gay men have not. This has to do with the patriarchal system which dominates a majority of the various religions as well as the rapidly in- creasing number of twelve-step programs. This is because God and the Higher Power are referred to in the male gender. This all suggests that males are superior beings and that females are inferior to them. Re- member that the scriptures say, "We are created in the image of God." Why is that image described as "He," "Him" and "Father"? Is it because males dominate authoritative positions in many organized religions? Is it because two men started the first twelve-step program? Women may be different from men anatomically and biologically and as a result of ourculture's socialization practices; females certainly are not less than men, however, and are ab- solutely equal in the spiritual world. Psy- chologists have been telling us for some time now that the mentally healthy person is androgynous, that is, having both mas- culine and feminine characteristics, re- gardless of one's gender. There are other forms of sexual and spiritual abuse that not only affect the gay or lesbian person but heterosexual people as well. Some religions teach that sex is dirty, bad and shameful, and that mastur- bation is asin. Some religions have the pro- pensity to define what sexual activities are acceptable in "God's eyes," and which sexual activities are sinful or bad. People are often judged by their sexual behavior and subject to being rejected, ostracized and condemned by "good Christians." • Jacuui • Private Dressing Rooms • Outdoor Pool • Showers • large Outdoor Sundeck • Video Rooms Next week: Overcoming the conse- • Lockers • Fitness Instructor • FreeWeights quences of sexual and spiritual abuse. • Nautilus • Specials Weekly • Tanning Bed Robert K.
