August 2005 www.fctv.org FCTV NOW HOME TO Kia`i I Ka Leo

What is a “Pahu” named Kia`i I Ka Leo and what does this mean for FCTV?

A Pahu is a drum and Kia`i I Ka Leo is the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) drum. Each year at the close of the ACM International Conference and Trade Show, a ceremony is held during which the current local planning committee hands over the pahu to the local committee of the site of the next conference. Paul Congo, Access Monterey Peninsula presents the Pahu to Debra Rogers Next year’s Conference & Trade Show will be held in Boston July 5 - 8, 2006. FCTV Executive Director Debra Rogers who has been the Chair of the National Conference Committee for six years is now also Chair of the Boston Planning Committee. As such she is considered the caretaker of the Pahu. Hence Kia`i I Ka Leo has now come “home” to FCTV.

The mood was exuberant at the closing ceremony in Monterey, CA as members of the NE Region marched into the hall clapping and cheering in their "Boston Finest" wearing Red Sox, Patriots and college shirts and hats, and proudly displaying signs celebrating Keali'ioluolu Gora, Olelo Community TV Board Boston. Following this joyful celebration, the ceremonial passing of Member (Honolulu), Debra Rogers, NE Region Chair the “pahu” occurred. Keith Thibault, and Nancy Richard, NE Region Board The pahu-drum was created on the island of O`ahu on the occasion of the 1994 ACM conference. The pahu is named Kia`i I Ka Leo which means “Protector of the voice” in Hawaiian. The pahu was given as a gift from Hawaii to the Alliance. It is tradition that the organizing committee of the area hosting the conference, keep and display Kia`i I Ka Leo as a way to provide support, unity and focus. At the end of each conference, the local committee passes on stewardship of Kia`i I Ka Leo to the next local committee. This part of the ceremony is solemn and joyous. For the current local host committee, it will be saying goodbye to a loved one who has been John Donovan (Cambridge TV), Judi Kelemen with them for the last year. For the incoming host committee, the (Newton TV) & Antonio Correia (NE Region Board) receiving of a precious gift.

FCTV member Nick Riebesehl runs Board Member, works their booth. camera for a mock interview. FCTV was pleased to be a part of the first Arts Alive Festival hosted by the newly formed Falmouth Cultural Alliance. It was a great opportunity for FCTV to be out in our community. A special thank you to our member volunteers; Chuck & Caroline Bacon, Andrew Carbone, Valerie Douglas, Tom Keefe, Merletta Martin, Kathy Palmer and Nick Riebesehl who came to help us promote FCTV, serve as crew on mock interviews and offer tours of our production van. Member producers Pucky Roslansky and Kevin Lynch covered the event, so keep your eyes on our weekly program guide for dates and times of when their show will air on FCTV-13.

We look forward to doing this again next year. If anyone has any ideas that you think may be helpful, or would be interested in volunteering, call or email David Finer at 508-457-0800 or [email protected]. A LETTER FROM FCTV's FORMER OFFICE - LITZA BROWN Hello all! Just keeping you updated on my son Dana's tour of duty over in Korea. Dana was originally slated to report to the 2nd Infantry Detachment at Camp Casey in with high probability of being shipped to Iraq or Afghanistan. Things did a 180 when he arrived. He was reassigned to the prestigious and elite United Nations Dana Brown Honor Guard at Yongsan Garrison located in the heart of . At first, Dana was not happy with this because he's considered 'out of rate' however, with wisdom from his father and the grace of God, Dana is finding out that he got the better end of the deal.

Dana's tasks with the United Nations Honor Guard is not about 'pretty boy' ceremonies. His year-long tour of duty will include protecting and securing the Combatant Commander and his family during armistice and hostilities, securing critical command and control facilities, defending Joint Task Force Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations Headquarters during transition to war and hostilities. As a member of this prestigious and elite assignment, he will also be tasked with patrolling and reconnaissance at the DMZ that separates North Korea from South Korea. He will also be participating in Ceremonial Guards of Honor for the dignitaries of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, and Eighth as well as conducting Repatriation Ceremonies.

He's deployed often so time on the internet to retrieve email is minimal but he would be very appreciative of handwritten letters, care packages and emails to keep him from getting lonely. He loves euro type race car magazines, and ESPN, alternative rock music, and various movies. His barracks room is pretty bare so anything to decorate would be nice. He also has access to a Play Station 2 - he likes fast car games and military type games. Anything Hockey related would make his day.

Well, that's about it for now. I will keep you all posted on any changes or updates. Most of all, we are very proud of Dana for taking this step in his life and deciding that serving his country was important. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. - Litza Brown -

FCTV will be gathering items to send a "care package" to Dana. A box will be placed in the reception area, please drop off notes or items you would like sent to Dana by August 8th. See Debby or Victoria for more package ideas or Dana’s address. August 2005 - Page 4
