’95 MichelBachelor of Science Justus in Biology/minor in Chemistry Easley, S.C.

Michel Justus credits Southern Wesleyan for laying a spiritual and academic foundation to go beyond success in more than 12 years of teaching.

Her engaging, hands-on approach to teaching concepts of biology to students at D.W. Daniel High School has won Justus significant honors by her peers in education. In 2010, she was selected for the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for the State of South Carolina. She also earned national board certification and completed the Critical Needs Certification program.

Justus has taught at various high schools across the state for 12 years and taught biology, physiology and anatomy at Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter, S.C.

SWU did more than prepare Justus for teaching. Shortly after graduating, she used experience gained while assisting in one of the university’s computer labs at a business that provided electronic solutions for printing companies. Beyond success >>>>significance ’90/’08 Dr.Bachelor’s Valerie Management ofRamsey Human Resources and Master of Ministry Easley, S.C. Dr. Valerie Ramsey, a Southern Wesleyan University graduate who recently retired as chief business officer for Clemson University’s College of Health Education and Human Development, describes herself as a late starter into academics who moved beyond discouraging circumstances to attain success. “Having grown up in poverty and illiteracy – raised by a single parent – I didn’t know what college was,” Ramsey said. “I was a teenage mother who dropped out of high school and later got my diploma.” Ramsey earned a clerical certificate and was hired at Clemson University. But to advance, she needed a college degree. After earning her associate’s degree, she discovered she could earn a bachelor’s degree in just 18 months through the Adult and Graduate Studies program at Southern Wesleyan. On the way to her first class, Ramsey says she encountered God – starting a lifelong relationship. Ramsey realized the value of her Southern Wesleyan education even before graduating. As a class project, she conducted a workshop and did a survey for her department at work, leading to a promotion. She went on to earn a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Clemson. ’82 RayBachelor of Lattimore Arts in Business Administration Greenville, S.C. Ray Lattimore entered Southern Wesleyan University with dreams of his own, but realized a potential far beyond what he could have imagined. Lattimore is founder and president of Marketplace Staffing Services, a Greenville-based company that has grown into the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Ohio. He is a community leader, serving on numerous boards and foundations. The first in his family to enter college, Lattimore came to Southern Wesleyan on a basketball scholarship. But his dream was to go pro in basketball. What Lattimore learned at Southern Wesleyan was invaluable – moving him beyond the basics academically and preparing him for a career as well as shaping him spiritually. He realized going pro in basketball would not have allowed him to reach his fullest potential. He is now serving people all over the Mid-Atlantic and South. “SWU changed my life, taught me how to love and brought me closer to Christ,” Lattimore said, adding that the chapel services he attended impacted his life and brought him closer to God. Beyond Dreams >>>>Potential ’09 LanceBachelor of Science Ingle in Applied Computer Science Central, S.C. Lance Ingle applied to a larger university’s computer science program and was accepted, but the attention he received from staff and faculty at Southern Wesleyan University convinced him of the true value unique to a smaller institution. Ingle knew he wanted to work in information technology, having already completed computer certifications at the Anderson Career Technology Center as a Wren High School student. After speaking with a Southern Wesleyan guidance counselor who visited his school, Ingle met with computer science professors who quickly took an interest in him. “I thoroughly enjoyed the Southern Wesleyan experience,” he said. “You got to know everyone and everyone got to know you. I learned how to learn – that’s the biggest thing.” Ingle added that his Southern Wesleyan education prepared him well for a good corporate job in computer security after graduation. Beyond AffordAffordaabble >>>>Vaallueue He has returned to Southern Wesleyan, working as a security analyst and earning a master’s degree in computer information systems. While taking graduate classes, Ingle began to appreciate the value of his undergraduate education, noticing that other graduate students were asking questions about basic concepts he had already learned at Southern Wesleyan.
