NEWPORT DAY 2 TALKING POINTS

 ISNER, SOCK & HAAS OPEN CAMPAIGNS – Top seed and two-time champion (2011-12) , fellow American and fourth seed and the oldest player in the main draw, Tommy Haas, get their Newport campaigns under way on Center Court on Tuesday. Sixth seed and 2009 finalist opens play against Aussie qualifier , followed by 22-year-old Sock squaring off with former 36 year old and former World No. 8 Radek Stepanek. Isner is third on Center against , in the first battle of former singles champions in a 1R in tournament history. It will be their first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. Haas wraps up Day 2 action against . The German owns 55 tour-level match wins on grass, second behind Ivo Karlovic (56) for most among players in this week’s field.

 BIG JOHN BEGINS THIRD TITLE QUEST – Isner is the top seed and the 30-year-old American has a 15-4 career record in Newport. He opens against 2009 titlist Ram (d. Querrey) and is making his fifth straight visit. Both of his titles in 2011-12 came as the top seed. This year, North Carolina native reached the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club and a career-best 3R at Wimbledon for the second year in a row where he lost to Marin Cilic 12-10 in the fifth set. This is the 15th time in Isner’s career (first this year) he is the top seed in an ATP World Tour tournament (34-9 record). Four of his nine titles have come as the No. 1 seed, winning in Newport ’11-12 and ’13-14.

 TOMMY’S TEST – The oldest player in the singles draw is 37-year-old wild card Haas, who returns to Newport for the first time since 2011. He returned to the ATP World Tour last month after undergoing right shoulder surgery on June 17, 2014. In his three grass court tournaments, Haas reached the second round in Stuttgart and Wimbledon and lost in first round in Halle. The German veteran owns a 55-29 grass-court record including a pair of title runs in Halle (2009, ’12).

 CARRYING THE FLAG – There are 10 Americans competing on home soil in Newport, with six in action on Tuesday. Querrey looks to build on a strong grass season, having reached the Nottingham final (l. to Istomin), before falling to in the Wimbledon second round. The 2009 Newport runner-up (l. to Ram) owns a 7-5 tournament record. Sock upset top seed Isner in last year’s QF and returns with his maiden ATP World Tour title in Houston in April (d. Querrey). Opening play on Court 1 is Wisconsin native , seeded (No. 8) for the first time at an ATP World Tour event. He faces qualifier Jan Hernych in his fourth appearance (2-3 record). Second on Court 2 is , in search of his second win over Japan’s Yuichi Sugita (Atlanta 2011). Harrison reached 7th ATP SF and first since 2013 at ATP 500 event in Acapulco.

 PHILIPPOUSSIS RETURNS – Former singles No. 8 contests his first ATP World Tour main draw since 2006, competing alongside Harrison as doubles wild cards. A three- time champion on the doubles circuit (1997 Queen’s Club w/ Rafter, 1995 Kuala Lumpur w/ P McEnroe, 1995 Hong Kong w/ Ho), the Aussie is two match wins from his 100th at the Tour level. He fell in singles qualifying to Eric Quigley on Saturday. Doubles top seeds Robert Farah and Santiago Gonzalez make their team debut against and Mate Pavic on Court 3.
