2 Spotlight on our Farmers’ Market Vendors

Dizzy Lizzie’s Farm, 3823 Sanderson Rd., Erieville, NY 13061 315-662-7565 Elizabeth Blackburn is a certified organic family farm priding itself on offering diversified high-quality products. We grow and produce organic produce/fruit/garlic, beautiful cut flowers, organic plants, maple syrup and value-added products ranging from pestos to spices. We also offer seasonal U-Pick options for berries and flowers. See You at the Farmers Market every Saturday!!

Joe Lazarsky and Aileen Randolph purchased 100 acres on Falls Road late in 2009. It was an old dairy farm that hadn’t been farmed in a dec- ade. In 2011 we brought in a small herd of bison from Tennessee. Our herd has grown to over 60 and we’ve learned alot about bison, fencing and the challenges of small scale farming. We wouldn’t be here today without the support of our community and passionate bison eaters from across the region. We truly appreciate it. Empire Buffalo, LLC 315-655-4429 1351 Falls Rd., Chittenango Our herd numbers around 60. They are completely grass fed and man- aged as a family herd, breeding and calving on their own. Hay is brought in to the pastures for about 8 months of the year. No antibiotics are used. We’re happy to answer any questions about how we do things and why. See you at the Cazenovia and Fayetteville Farmers’ Markets!!

Ginger Wood Works, Neal Parker, 2399 Juddville Rd., Cazenovia, NY 13035 315-559-4806 One-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces made in Cazenovia, NY. Hi, I’m Neal Parker. I’m passionate about offering an alternative to box-store furniture. After 7 years of making residential and commercial pieces, I decided to open my own woodshop. My Promise To You: “Honest projects for honest prices that are heirloom quality.”. See you at the Farmers’ Market every Saturday in Cazenovia!!

Harley’s Barkery, Michael Primavera Jr, 113 Carlton Ave, Syracuse, NY 13219 315-378-1861 Our goals at Harley's Bakery are to have fun, learn more everyday to be able to create more healthy flavors, share our delicious, homemade, healthy treats with as many pups as we can and most importantly, raise funds for animals and people who need our help.

Find us at the Farmers’ Market every Saturday and at 20|East Check out all of the new flavors for your best friend.

Hartwood Farm, Maryellen and Matt Robinson, 5258 Irish Ridge Rd, Chittenango, NY 315-655-5652 We began farming in 1998 (except for Beulah our dog, who only began creepily smiling at farm visitors in 2018), and started Hartwood Farm in 2012. We landed here because we used to grow hops in NH (did you know Madison County was a his- toric center of east coast hops production?), and because central NY is the midway point between Matt’s NH home and Maryellen’s Midwestern family, with both rolling hills and lake effect! We met in NH in 2001, where Maryellen had a market garden and CSA farm. In 2008, we head- ed west to NY's Hudson Valley for a change of pace, where Maryellen managed a large educa- tional farm and Matt was field manager at the awesome Hearty Roots Farm. And them we found the land that became Hartwood Farm... See you at the market every Saturday!!

Capturing the Best of Cazenovia The Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF) is pleased to announce our first annual photography contest, Capturing the Best of Cazenovia. Whether you are a professional or weekend enthusiast, creative photographers of all ages are encouraged to submit photos that reflect the remarkable sights and charm of Cazenovia.

Enter up to five of your favorite photographs of nature, scenic vistas, historical architecture, or people at local events. Capture a dramatic image that generates excitement or one that instills peace. “The CPF contest is a wonderful way for professionals and amateurs to share their creativity and passion for photography. We encourage local individuals, families, and visitors of all ages to explore our beautiful hiking trails and natural resources. All are welcome to participate.” Anne Saltman

Executive Director Jennifer Wong planted the seed for this creative CPF photography contest to enhance CPF’s collection of high-quality images. “The contest is chaired by Anne Saltman, a member of the CPF Development & Community Engagement Committee. She’s really done a wonderful job of recruiting an expert panel of judges and framing up the event. Great photography is the best way to tell the story of what CPF does. In running it as a contest, we can also engage the community around these great images and the people who made them. We are hoping that this will inspire photographers, or would-be photogra- phers, in our community to get out and explore. Maybe they walk a trail they have never visited or take a less-traveled road in search of inspiration “ Jen Wong

All photos will be judged by a group of local experts comprised of current or former CPF board members or volunteers with a professional background in photography. They will select three semi-finalists in each category and the public will have an opportunity to vote for the finalists. One finalist in each category will receive a cash prize: $250 in the professional category, $250 in the adult amateur category, $100 in high school/college student category, and $50 for the winning photo in the youth category. There is a $20 entry fee for adults, and it is free for students. One of the judges, Sarah Cross, will host one or two guided photography walks on CPF properties this fall.

The images must be taken within the Cazenovia School District and submitted before our October 15th deadline. The winning photographs will be featured on social media. CPF is also exploring options to display them at the Cazenovia Public Library, at the CPF fall fundraiser at the Red Barn on October 24 th , and at the CPF annual meeting in the spring of 2022. We will also print sets of notecards as appreciation gifts for donors and potentially offer them for sale in select locations throughout Cazenovia.

Additional information about the contest is available on the CPF website - https://www.cazpreservation.org/photography-contest/

18 Chamber News & Notes

Jerry Embree -Popular bandleader in New Orleans (produced a tribute to Sidney Bechet among other things) was quoted as saying: “None of the college radio programs provide earlier forms of jazz. They all start off jazz with Bebop.” Anybody who's been following our radio program or reads these notes knows why that is. Too bad. Bop musicians play for themselves, not to entertain others so much. I did meet a lot of well-known ones through the guy who started the now called 'Jazz Loft'. But I don't air them. We only play old jazz – before 1960 back to 1895. As previously noted, there were many styles of jazz before Be- Bop came along. Young people (age 3 and up way beyond college age) love the old jazz. In fact, all people do. They don't like contemporary jazz. This is an opportunity for anyone who gives it a little thought, to follow something that can become, in this age of amazingly bad music, very, very popular. A Mr. HoldenDickinson sent a note to “Roger's List” on facebook that said: “Best show on the radio”.”Fun Music” is the best 2 hours of music I hear all week”. BTW “Fun Music” came from Colgate students. I don't do anything active with facebook. It's a list of people I felt were good enough to take the time and trouble and money to go see someplace. I went to the Newport Jazz Fest twice in Newport and once in NYC, so I sometimes saw quite afew at the same time!

Too bad about the FCC shutting off 87.7. We'll still use Nina Simone's recording of her composition called “Under the Lowest”. We've done over 1,000 pro bono PSAs for CNY on 87.7. The FCC thing is political – the decision- maker knows little about radio. To get our program, dubbed “Roger's List” by the Colgate students, now, you just Google WVOA and either click on through to where you get the actual program and/or set your radios to 1540 AM and 106.3 FM and listen to it OTA – Thursdays, now temporarily at 5:30 PM instead of 5. Streams world-wide. Don't let the religious icons throw you. We have zero connections with any other programmers on this station. It's just a place where you can rent some time if you want to have very big numbers of people know something (such as their own real music). The owners have some bigger stations too, like WOLF, The Dinosaur, and Movin' 100, etc.

When the Eagle Bulletin gave us that very, very nice front page spread 5 years ago with that candid shot Editor Allie Wenner sprang on me so fast I didn't have time to pull my stomach in, they did some calculations and it came out at about 100,000 person readership of that issue. And I learned way back that listeners to this kind of music tended to come back again the next week. That's why the owners are flabbergasted. “See you on the radio” said Charles Osgood.
