Torpoint

Is a village, in the parish of St Antony, and in the south division of East hundred; about three miles from Devonport. Its situation is peninsular, occasioned by the , the Tamar, and St John’s Lake, and the south-western part abutting upon the sea-coast. The lake, which lets in the sea, furnishes the inhabitants abundantly and luxuriantly with fish. It is a place unimportant as respects trade; but it is a highly respectable little village, and the society here is well and selectly sustained by the residence of a great number of naval officers. The parish church, which is dedicated to St Jacob, is situated about three miles from the village; the living is a vicarage, in the gift of the Right Hon. R.P. Carew; and the Rev. D. Young is the vicar. In the village is a chapel of ease to the parish church (of which the Rev. John Nolan is the curate), and three chapels for dissenters. There are also two free- schools here; one upon the national plan, supported by voluntary contributions, and the other founded and endowed by Sir Coventry Carew Bart. for educating and clothing ten boys and girls. There are many genteel seats in the vicinage of ; but the chief objects of curiosity and attraction are, castle, the Grotto, and ‘the Hut’, belonging to Lady St Germains. The parish of Antony is well cultivated; the soil, though not naturally good, is greatly improved by manure; and there are views around the parish, scarcely to be exceeded in beauty and variety by any in the kingdom. The parish of Antony St Jacob contained, in 1821, 2,642 inhabitants.
