Annex C: “Christmas Alive at Marina Bay” by Marina Bay Business Association (MBBA)

Marina Bay Business Association (MBBA) proudly unveils “Christmas Alive at Marina Bay”, an electrifying bayside experience of musical performances, art installations and interactive street decorations.

A daring breakthrough from conventional street decorations, this year’s arts-inspired theme is borne from our creative collaboration with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). “We wanted a fresh perspective of celebrating Christmas that is reflective of our roots as an arts and cultural precinct. Beyond the usual festivities, the light up provides a meaningful platform for nurturing young talents and an avenue for charity events,” said Ms Michelle Koh, President of MBBA.

“We look forward to seeing Marina Bay come alive with spectacular night displays and a host of exciting fringe events—from choral performances to land and river cruises, charity events involving a specially designed Gail Pantin umbrella and even a Christmas food trail,” Ms Koh added. On the collaboration, Ms Sabrina Long, Head of Department of 3D Design at NAFA, said: "We are delighted to participate in this project. Edwin Cheong, the lecturer in charge of the project, and the students created a multi-sensory experience that included sound and interactive elements for both local and international visitors. This partnership also provides a platform to widen the horizons of our students and the exposure they have acquired will benefit their careers."

To saturate the bay with live activities, MBBA worked closely with event partner Celebrate Christmas in (CCIS) to dot the landscape with musical performances from Indonesia, Papua, the Philippines South Africa and Singapore. A definite highlight is a mass carolling event on 23 and 24 December—a first for Singapore on such a grand scale. Between 8pm and 10pm on both days, visitors will be serenaded by the majestic voices of CCIS’ 1500-strong choir at the outdoor area of facing Raffles Avenue and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

For the Christmas light up decorations, the main motifs of white sparkling snowflakes, live Norfolk pine trees and majestic reindeers hark back to the traditional Christmas where these living elements are a resplendent part of the natural, wintry landscape. Here, these beloved symbols take centrestage in a larger-than-life expression of our Christmas “Alive” theme, and with a twist! Visitors can interact with giant reindeers that sport magnificent antlers extending out beautifully like intricate fans and light up upon sensing your presence. Or capture a moment in time under a gigantic bauble tree amid works of art, shaped with huge circular baubles inspired by the white wishing spheres that are set afloat in Marina Bay as part of the Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown jointly organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Esplanade. Each wishing sphere represents the collective hopes and dreams of different individuals as they welcome the New Year with anticipation.

To enjoy these spectacular night displays, simply hop onto our Christmas tour bus or take a leisurely cruise to soak in spectacular views of Marina Bay’s iconic landmarks and green spaces from the to Esplanade, The Fullerton Heritage and many more. Simply spend $100 at participating malls in Marina Bay to be eligible for up to four tour bus tickets for these rides from Fridays to Sundays, 19 November to 25 December 2011. For the Singapore River Cruise, each ticket is only $17 which takes you from the ArtScience Museum past to the Marina Bay City Gallery, Park and the Singapore River.

For visitors who prefer to enjoy the events on foot, they can take photographs with the art installations at their leisure or catch musical performances throughout the bay. En-route to these locations, visitors can stop at our malls to take advantage of our Christmas promotions. To celebrate the festive season, the gastronomically adventurous can follow their culinary taste buds on our Christmas food trail to savour some creatively concocted drinks, desserts or dishes.

In the spirit of giving, visitors can do their part for charity by purchasing a limited edition umbrella specially designed by artist Gail Pantin at our member malls. Featuring an original panoramic sketch of Marina Bay, part of the sales proceeds of this wonderful memento will be donated to the Community Chest. Individual MBBA members will also be hosting charity events for during the Christmas Light Up season to bring cheer to the less fortunate.

As part of the Marina Bay SINGAPORE Countdown, a contemplative celebration that brings people from all walks of life together, visitors can pen their wishes for the New Year on wishing spheres at various wishing stations in the participating MBBA malls from 25 November 2011, a week before this annual tradition hits the rest of Singapore. The wishing spheres will be set afloat in Marina Bay – the Bay of Hope & Light – to form a spectacular visual arts display.

Beginning 19 November 2011 and ending on 2 January 2012, the year-end Christmas festivities at Marina Bay will be a unique experience not to be missed.
