2020 Donor Appreciation

SUSTAINING KANUGA During the Pandemic Thank you. Dear Kanuga Community,

While we began 2020 with tremendous promise for the year at Kanuga, no one projected what would hit us in March. When you operate “conferences and camps” and all of the sudden you can no longer “conference or camp,” it creates a perfect storm. Kanuga lost more than $7,500,000 in earned revenue in 2020. To keep this special place in existence, we slashed the operating budget and cut the staff back to only 16 people. We received two Paycheck Protection Program “loans” from the Federal Government. But what really got us through was you!

In the true spirit of this “thin and holy” place, you came through with increased contributions. You gave $2,826,555 last year in 2,783 separate gifts! Compare that to 2019, when $1,284,585 was con- tributed through 2,159 gifts. That is an increase of 624 gifts and $1,541,970. In a pandemic! Wow!

Guests also came to Kanuga for cottage retreats, which earned some income. We also had a great response to Ride Kanuga mountain bike park (the perfect sport when you cannot get close to others!); many of those who came to stay overnight rode the new bike trails.

The gift support helped us pay for utilities, insurance, required maintenance, and other necessary expenditures. While our salaries were slashed, we still needed to keep a small staff to do what we could to take care of Kanuga and get to the other side of the pandemic. Those of us who remained made a commitment that we would not let Kanuga fall. And you joined with us to keep that from happening. Thank you does not seem to be enough. But it is heart-felt. From all of us at Kanuga, thank you!

You will notice changes in our honor roll. Because of the cutback in staff, we are not able to report how many years you have given consecutively. We are so grateful for those of you who are committed to making a gift “this year and every year. ” But this honor roll is specifically for 2020. We are celebrating and saying a public thank you to the people, parishes, foundations, and organizations who came forward during this specific year.

When you look though this honor roll, you may find mistakes. Please help us by reaching out to Advancement Operations Specialist Will Drosick should you find an error. Forgive us. We will make the change online quickly.

While Kanuga is not completely out of the woods, we feel extremely positive about the future. We still need you. We will always need you to join with each other to do things for the good through this place in the pines upon the mountain. Godspeed to us all as we learn how to return to live in community again.

With a heavy but grateful heart, we thank Jim Hackney for two years of incredible service to Kanuga in the advancement office.

When he arrived, he had no idea that we would face the fundraising challenge of COVID less than a year later, but like all things with Jim, he gave fully of his heart and soul to help Kanuga reach a milestone in unrestricted giving, more than doubling the Annual Fund and vastly increasing the number of donors.

Jim embraced Kanuga’s spirit in everything he did and elevated our advancement efforts in every way. As he retires earlier than expected due to health concerns, we wish him all the best and look forward to welcoming him home to Kanuga any time!

After a national search, we are pleased to announce that Bill Norris joined our team as executive vice president of advancement. Bill joins us from The University of North Carolina Asheville, where he has Jim Hackney been a major gifts officer. Prior to UNCA, he also served advancement at various institutions including more recently Western Carolina University. A banjo player, we look forward to hearing his music among us as he leads our continued fundraising efforts. Please welcome him to the Kanuga family!
