Lot 701 BOXING Lot 701 JACK JOHNSON: Golden Wedding souvenir from Judge George Albert Carpenter. Rare Estimate A$100 item of memorabilia. [Jack Johnson became the first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion 1908-1915. Married to a white woman, in 1913 he was convicted of Reserve A$75 'transporting a white woman across State lines'. & sentenced to 1 year & 1 day. After the conviction, Johnson skipped bail and left the US for 7 years. On his return in 1920 he served his sentence. In 2018, he was finally given a pardon for his racially motivated imprisonment. The ultimate irony is that this item was a gift from the judge who sentenced him!]
