PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK TEARS

In today's Parsha (1:22-46), Moshe recounts the story of the spies. This story has special signifi- cance for us this Shabbos, as our Sages teach us that this story occured on Tisha B'Av, and that it was the needless tears shed by the Jews on that night in the desert that led to the tragic tears brought on by the Temples' destruction generations later. However, upon studying this story carefully we find two distinct sets of tears. When the story is originally told (Bamidbar 14:1), we are told that the people cried - indeed needlessly - upon hearing the negative report of the spies. However our Parsha does not record those tears. Instead it says that after the failed attempt of some of the Jews to enter the land after G-d had refused their entry - an attempt that ended with significant losses in combat - the Jewish People returned and cried be- fore Hashem. Why do the two accounts reference two different sets of tears? And why on Shabbos Chazon do we not read of the tears that led to the Churban ?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR THE EREV TISHA B'A V MEAL (S)

The last meal preceding the fast is known as the Seudah HaMafsekes , and must be very simple, con- taining no more than one cooked item along with bread. It is customary that we eat cold hard-boiled egg as the cooked item, and dip both the bread and the egg in ashes. It is appropriate to eat this meal on the floor, and to declare it as "the meal of Tisha B'Av" (OC 552). Rema (552:9) explains that these limitations on the meal preceding the fast created a difficulty, as in this manner it would be difficult to feed oneself sufficiently in preparation for the upcoming fast. As such, common Ashkenzic custom was to have a more complete meal a bit earlier in the afternoon, includ- ing multiple cooked foods, then Bentsch and break for Mincha, and then return for the modest meal im- mediately preceding the fast. Many authorities struggled with this practice as it seemed to do away with spirit of the law which was to limit one's feasting before the fast as well. Nevertheless the practice is to be continued to the extent that it allows us to fast well. It remains appropriate to keep the earlier meal practical and modest (MB 552:22). While the meal before Yom Kippur is something akin to an elaborate Yom Tov feast, the meals before Tisha B'Av should be more muted and to the point.
