This time of the year we will be installing new Unit/Club Presidents. Congratulations to the new officers that have stepped forward to lead our clubs for the following year. Let me be the first to encourage you to attend our International Rally at Doswell, Virginia in July 2019. Your Region President will soon be presenting you with a bright green Doswell cap for you to wear during your term as president. At the International Rally, you will join with other club presidents from around the United States and Canada for an appreciation lunch or dinner sponsored by WBCCI. Your service to the Wally Byam Airstream Club is greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank the retiring Unit/Club Presidents who are completing their term of office. WBCCI is built on the foundation of units and clubs. It is only through the unit/club delegates that the WBCCI constitution may be changed. This opportunity happens only once a year at the International Rally during the annual delegates’ meeting. It is also when our international officers are elected. Many of our unit/club presidents serve as delegates.

Enjoy your year as a Club President. Take a look at the Revised Unit Planning Guide to “Spice Up” your Unit/Club rallies. Again, thank you for your service and I hope to see you in Doswell, Virginia in 2019.

Boy it’s been hot! Camping in the U.P. (the upper Alumapalooza Whiskey Brownies peninsula of Michigan) at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in June was the last cool weather we’ve seen 8 oz. dark chocolate (this is two 4 oz. bars of Ghirardelli or similar). You can also substitute 1 ¼ up here. The thought of turning on my oven to cup chocolate chips bake isn’t something I’d normally do when it’s 87 degrees. But it won’t always be this hot outside, 1 stick butter (4 oz.) and baking in an Airstream can be quite enjoyable 2 eggs (and tasty!) We all know the oven is finicky and 1 tsp vanilla likely to burn the bottoms of cookies and biscuits. I’ve been trying to find a solution to distribute heat 1/2 cup white sugar more evenly since the flame is centered in the 2/3 cup brown sugar middle of the oven. I’ve found two solutions, both which work quite well. 1/3 cup whiskey; flavor is up to you. The first was to purchase a small baking cookie sheet, 15 inches wide. 1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour These half cookie sheets are easy to find. I bought mine at TJ Maxx for $7.99. Get a good quality thick one, as those are less likely to burn your 1 T cocoa powder baking through the bottom. If you don’t shop at TJ Maxx, you are likely 1 cup chopped pecans (or other nuts). Hazelnuts and walnuts also work to pay $20 or so for a sturdy one. This size will slide into the oven rack well. guides that are in your Airstream oven. It acts as another rack, but then sits above the rack for more air flow. You can bake directly on it, or set You’ll need an 8” square pan for these. I always carry a metal one in the your casserole or baking dish on the cookie sheet. I use the top third of my Airstream so it won’t break while traveling. Take a piece of aluminum foil oven, one section above the propane jet tube (i.e. “the flame thrower”). and put it in the pan with the edges hanging out so it is easy to take out the brownies (also makes less dishes to wash). The other solution, which I use conjunctively with the cookie sheet option, is a thick pizza stone. I custom ordered mine to fit the oven, in a 14” Melt butter with the chocolate until all is melted and combined. Turn off by 14” size. The best thickness that keeps the heat distributed is a ½”. the heat and let cool. The ¼” sizes they sell at department stores will still burn the bottoms of your baked goods if you put your cookie sheet directly on the stone. Use a whisk or wooden spoon or hand mixer to combine the two eggs and However if you slide your cookie sheet on the oven tray guides directly both sugars. Make sure they are whisked/beaten together until frothy and above the stone, you’ll have some air circulation and most things will bake pale colored. satisfactorily. I purchased a thicker stone because sometimes I like to Add the whiskey, the vanilla and the chocolate/butter mixture. bake bread or pizza directly on the stone. I’m not always using my cookie sheet. Add the cocoa and the flour and mix with your wooden spoon. The thickness of the batter will make a whisk rather useless at this point. While attending the 2018 Alumapalooza, I baked some whiskey brownies that were such a hit that they were made again later in the week by Add the chopped nuts (or leave out if you don’t like nuts). One other option request. They’ve been taste-tested and given a thumbs up by Streamers. is to add butterscotch chips or additional chocolate chips. They’ve now become the Alumapalooza Whiskey Brownies! One of the attendees from Colorado, James, found a bottle of Peach Pecan Whiskey Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Check after about 15 minutes to in a small grocery store just outside Jackson Center. The first time I’d make sure they aren’t burning on the bottom or browning too quickly on made the brownies I’d used maple whiskey. The second time I used the the top. Rotate if necessary. peach pecan whiskey made by Old Camp. Can’t say which was better, but they both disappeared equally fast. Test with a toothpick or chopstick or knife to make sure they are not too gooey. After cooling for about 10 minutes, pull the brownies out of the pan by the foil ends. Cool until you can’t stand not to eat them. 10 BLUE BERET / SEPTEMBER 2018 BLUE BERET / SEPTEMBER 2018 11 CLUB NEWS

Southern Campaign Caravan and

Carolinas Unit of North Carolina Marcia Thompson, #5027 Photos by Dale Spillman, #15880

On October 1, 2017, The American Revolution - Southern Campaign WBCCI caravan (N-46-M) passed near Greensboro, NC and the Carolinas Unit of NC (021) members Ray and Carol Combs (#2994) invited the group to come to their home in Oak Ridge, NC for a southern style pig picking. The Combs invited more Carolinas Unit members who lived nearby, Bruce and Marcia Thompson (#5027) and George and Margie Lamb (#1190), along with neighbors Dianne Paige and Libby Riordon to help serve the meal. Their neighbor Bill Riordon cooked the delicious pig. Hostess Carol made hors d’oeuvres of homemade pimento cheese, crackers, and nuts, and gallons of sweet and unsweet tea. She also prepared fresh coleslaw and baked beans for sides and made banana pudding and brownies with raspberries for dessert. Ray asked a local high school history teacher, Ray Parrish, to come educate the caravan members about the Oak Ridge area in the Revolutionary War. Entertainment was provided by members of the caravan. Among many tunes, they played a rousing God Bless America to a standing crowd. The Combs offered Caravan members bags of stone ground grits made at the pre-Revolutionary Mill in Oak Ridge along with an appropriate recipe on how to prepare grits Southern style, plus a recipe for shrimp and grits - a favorite of Ray’s low country SC heritage.

If a WBCCI caravan is coming through your Unit’s area, you are encouraged to contact the caravan leader to see if your Unit can host a welcoming event for them!

In 1985, Neil Crain and his first wife, Veryl, bought an Airstream trailer from Bill Thomas RV Sales and were given the name of the President of the Kansas City Airstream Club. As luck would have it, there was a rally at the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO, which they attended and became official members of the Kansas City Unit.

Neil and Delores met in 2000, and both having lost their spouses, were married. Neil introduced Delores to Airstreaming and their first rally together was you guessed it, the Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO. In order to duly celebrate their union, the rally attendees decided to throw a surprise chivaree. The standard wheelbarrow used for this sort of occasion was not to be found, but a local resident by the name of Mrs. Martha Anderson who lived adjacent to the Park offered up a little red wagon. Delores sat in the wagon and it was pulled down the street with much clanging of pots and pans, shouting and celebration. A night to remember for sure.

And here we are in April, 2018, eighteen years later with Neil and Delores much slowed down from those earlier days, but still Airstreaming. And, they are once again at a rally at Fairground Park in Higginsville, MO. 34 BLUE BERET / SEPTEMBER 2018 CLUB NEWS to install an in-line manual resetting circuit breaker fuse you will still have to replace the fuse holder, however, a standard ATC fuse holder will work (without trimming).

A good source for fuses and fuse holders is NAPA, or any automotive supply store. NAPA has an ATC auto-reset 30A fuse. Powerwerx has ATC, manual, resettable circuit breakers compatible with most ATC/ATO type fuse blocks available in 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 amps. (Powerwerx.com) To remove and install ATC fuses there are fuse pulling tools (also available at your automotive supply store), but needle nose pliers work too.

Blade type fuses come in six physical sizes: micro2, micro3, low-profile mini, mini, regular and maxi. For purposes of this discussion, we will mostly be concerned with 12V fuses of the ATC, regular, type (ATO looks the same).

The regular-sized ATC fuse is more common than the ATO. The ATC has a fuse element that is closed (hence the “C” in the code) inside the plastic housing, sealing it from the environment to prevent corrosion from developing. The ATO fuse is open on the bottom (hence the “O” in the code), exposing the fuse element between the blades. ATO and ATC are the same fuse in size and shape.

Blade fuses (also called spade or plug-in fuses), with a plastic body and two prongs that fit into sockets, are mostly used in automobiles and your Airstream. Each fuse is printed with the rated current in amps the top.

AGC fuse looks like this: (MDL fuse looks the same)

“AGC” stands for “automotive glass cartridge” “MDL” stands for “method detection limit” It is generally understood that an “AGC” fuse is fast blow whereas an “MDL” fuse is slow blow. The amp rating for these fuses is inscribed on the metal part of the fuse. These are known as “SFE” fuses, as they 1 were designed by the Society of Fuse Engineers to prevent the insertion of an unsafe fuse into the vehicle’s fuse panel. These SFE fuses all have a ⁄4- inch diameter, and the length varies according to the rating of the fuse. There are look-a-like fuses which can easily be confused with these. In general, this type of fuse will have an “AG” label of some kind on the device.

An ATC auto-reset circuit breaker fuse is sometimes used to replace a blade-type fuse in the same fuse holder. An automatic circuit breaker fuse looks like this:

An ATC manual reset circuit breaker fuse is sometimes used to replace a blade-type fuse in the same fuse holder. A manual circuit breaker fuse looks like this:

One print-friendly entry was withdrawn prior to placements being awarded. Competition in the print-friendly category was very close. After applying the tie-beaker for 1st and 2nd places, final placements were as follows: 1st – Palmetto State; 2nd – Northern California (NorCal); and 3rd - Delmarva. First place for the web-based category was awarded to Texas Highland Lakes, the single entry whose features matched the definition for this category.

In the directory contest, there were 11 entries in the bound category and 2 in the loose-leaf category. Placements in the bound category were: 1st – Ontario Canada; 2nd – North Dakota Peace Garden; 3rd – Northern Virginia (NORVA). In the loose-leaf category, placements were: 1st – Nebraska; and 2nd – Hudson-Mohawk.

Next year’s competition will follow the same format except that there will only be one category for directories. The criteria apply equally to both bound and loose-leaf formats and neither will be at a disadvantage when the categories are combined. 2019 will be the final year for the contest as we know it. Two of the 2018 rallies are past and so is the International Rally at Salem in Oregon, where Europe was represented for the first time. Our members are spread across 13 countries and we are seeing more of their photos and social media posts than ever as they explore the campsites and destinations of Europe, from Norway in the north to Italy in the south.

The welcome we received at Salem was overwhelming. It seemed like everyone in the 715 Airstreams knew we were there! We owe thanks to everyone who made that possible, especially Carolyn Beardshear, Mona Heath and Airstream Adventures NW who gave us a new Serenity for the duration of our stay! Our presence has really established Europe as an integral part of the Wally Byam Airstream Club. Meeting the new President, Vice Presidents, International Liaison Chair and others has also strengthened our links with the members who are shaping the future of the Club.

Our attendance has also set European members thinking about how they can have an American Airstream experience. BLUE BERET / SEPTEMBER 2018 45 AIRSTREAM From the Vice President of Sales Greetings from your extended family here in Jackson Center, OH! It is now September and the fall season is upon us. We have some exciting news since my August letter.

On August 3, 2018, we officially broke ground on the new Airstream Factory which is just a short mile west of our current facility. This was a great day as CEO/President Bob Wheeler addressed the audience of state officials, local officials, past and current Airstream employees. Mr. Wheeler thanked all the employees of Airstream and the village of Jackson Center for all the work done to get Airstream to this groundbreaking moment. This new 700,000 sq. ft. facility will be the largest single factory in the RV industry. The new factory will also feature a “Heritage Center.” This museum center will showcase some of the great historical facts, Airstreams and photos of this 87 year old company.

Lenny Razo Along with the “Heritage Center,” Airstream will house just over 600,000 sq. ft. of new production lines. We will have state of the art equipment for our employees to insure we continue to build the best quality into our trailers. As this plant opens in the next 12-14 months, this will also allow us to move our Interstate and Atlas production into the current trailer facility. This will increase the size of the production for our motor homes from the current 40,000 sq. ft. facility to a 230,000 sq. ft. facility! We look forward to sharing the progress of the new plant over the coming 12 months.

At the end of August, we welcomed 40 Airstream Dealer associates for a two day Airstream training session. We value all of our dealers and want to make sure they are caught up on all the latest product knowledge. We have continuous training throughout the year online, but we also offer these plant sessions twice a year in August and November. Our goal is for you to feel comfortable with all our Airstream Dealer associates and that they can answer any and all your questions.

In my August article, I mentioned the launch of the new Classic “Airstream Smart RV Control” system. Airstream began shipping the 2019 Classics with this feature in late July. We have teamed up with AT&T to make this “Airstream Smart RV Control” system come to life. With the purchase of a 2019 Classic, you will receive a 1 year unlimited data plan from AT&T. This will allow you to surf the web, stream music or movies from wherever your adventures take you. The 2019 Classic comes equipped with a local and remote Wi-Fi system. The new “Airstream Smart RV Control” will also allow you to monitor your Classic remotely through an Airstream App. As a 2019 Classic owner, you will have the ability to check items such as your tanks, LP, lights and even control your awning through your phone. However, if you are not a tech person and would rather not use your phone to control the Classic, you can still rely on the buttons inside the Classic to control everything you could have controlled in the past. The Classic offers great flexibility in how one wants to monitor or control the trailer.

On behalf of 996 hard working families in Jackson Center, OH, thank you for your business and passion for our products. It means the world to each of us here at Airstream!

Happy Airstreaming -
