Newfoundland Antique and Classic Club (NACCC) January – March 2008

Vaughan, Ontario (off Highway 400)

President’s Message

Soon winter will be passed and we will be on the road again.

I am very pleased to say we have received two applications for our scholarship and it is expected that our Scholarship Committee will make a decision very soon. I hope many of you attend the roast beef dinner and dance which had to be re-scheduled to March 8 due to poor weather conditions on February 23. These events are for you to keep in touch socially and provide a much needed winter activity.

Plans for Classic Wheels 2008 are well underway for May 31-June 1 at the Glacier. Remember this is our show and only you as members can make it successful by first showing your car and second by attending and offering your support and help during the weekend.

Bay Wheels will be on June 7-8 and we hope our members will support this show in the same manner as in other years.

President Jack Hill Vice-President Harold Howlett Treasurer Moira Farrell Social Director Cindy Howlett Past President Connie Hilliard

Members in attendance: 43

Minutes of the October 17 th. meeting were read by Adrian McKeever and adopted on a motion from Joe Doyle, seconded by John Dwyer.

Prior to commencing regular club business, Jack informed everyone he had met with Mr. Brent Smith of the Easter Seal Society and invited Mr. Smith to attend one of our meetings. Jack said the conversation with Mr. Smith went very well. There are no problems between the Easter Seal Society and NACCC and Mr. Smith will attend a meeting at a later date to give an overview of Easter Seals. At that time he will be available to answer any questions. ______Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 3

It was decided the donations from Classic Wheels 2007 will be forwarded to Easter Seals and VOCM Cares Foundation with a formal presentation to be made at a later date.

As he was unavailable at the AGM, Jack asked Richard Kearley if he would continue as the representative for the Sick Committee. Jack expressed his gratitude to Richard for his past work.

Social Events Update

Social Director, Cindy Howlett, reminded members of the upcoming schedule of events for the Club noting the Christmas kids’ party on Dec. 9th . and the Christmas dinner and dance is on Dec. 14 th . A Chinese supper might be planned in January and the February event would be a roast beef dinner and dance at the Legion. Once these events have been finalized, members will be informed by the phone committee and notification put on the website.

Cindy said she has been checking into entertainment for the kids’ party. A local student who conducts an animal petting exhibit may be available. Concern was expressed regarding any allergies the children might have. Jack asked Brendan Hollohan for his opinion and Brendan suggested the parents be conducted. Members agreed this entertainment would be a good idea. Jack asked Cindy to check further and make the reservation. The phone committee will be asked to contact members to determine how many kids will attend and if there are any problems with allergies. After some discussion, it was agreed the kids’ gifts would have a $15 limit. Again this year, Tom Hollett offered to make arrangements for the pizza and ice cream. Adrian McKeever noted members’ kids and grand-kids are welcome at the party. Jack also reminded everyone the invitation is also open for special nieces and nephews.

Jack asked if members wanted to continue with the Christmas stocking. Bob Ford again offered to organize this years stocking and asked for donations. He requested donations be dropped off to him at least one week prior to the dance.

Sick Committee

Richard noted the passing of Shirley Finlay’s sister and Betty Ford’s aunt. Jack said Bob and Daisy Murphy have moved to Florida for the winter months because of Bob’s breathing problems and Jackie Walsh is still very ill.

New Business

Dues There was a great deal of discussion regarding outstanding dues. Members voiced their opinions on tardiness and offered suggestions about a period of grace before being taken off the club roster. Most felt 3 months grace from the October general meeting was sufficient time.

Through discussion, rather than vote, it was decided fees must be paid by the January meeting. A reminder would be sent out in early December to those outstanding. If dues are still unpaid after the January meeting, those members will not receive Club correspondence or the national discount cards until dues are paid. One member felt those in good standing should have priority when registering for the upcoming car show. Those present agreed with the priority registration.

______Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 4

Albert Ford suggested the phone committee mention the payment of dues when making their calls.

National Association Bob Ford made a presentation on the work being conducted by the National Association. He will be attending the upcoming meeting in Toronto. As in past years, it was agreed the Club would help Bob with his expenses.

Bob read a letter received from one of the Ontario clubs that visited telling of how much they appreciated the hospitality shown them. Tom Hollett suggested the letter be added to the website and upcoming newsletter.

2008 NAAACCC discount cards will be distributed to those members with dues paid for current year.

Scholarship Program Tony Baggs said some progress has been made on the scholarship program. An application form has been developed and will be posted on the website and included in the next newsletter. Students will be asked to complete this form and return it by mail by January 15 th . He asked for suggestions as to how the $600 would be split. A final decision will be discussed later. Some members felt there should be an annual scholarship. Tom Hollett offered to run a 50/50 draw dedicated to the scholarship program.

Secretary Position Jack thanked Adrian McKeever for his past work as the Club’s secretary. As there was no secretary elected at the AGM, Jack asked for a volunteer. He suggested maybe someone could be called upon during each meeting. There was no response from the floor.

Functions at Legion Jack asked how members felt about having all NACCC social functions at the Legion. Several present thought it would be a good idea to use the same facility and Tom Hollett said we should support the Legion whenever we can. Members agreed.

Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:25 p.m. on a motion from Ed Farrell, Sr., seconded by Winnie Hill.

______Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 5

Minutes of the November 14 th . meeting were read by Harold Howlett, and adopted on a motion from Albert Ford, seconded by Ed Farrell, Jr.

Social Events Update

Cindy Howlett reported there were 40 children at the children’s party. She thanked all who helped out and extended special thanks to our Santa, Bill Newhook, Sr. and to Tom Hollett for arranging for the pizza and ice cream. Cindy told those present the entertainment originally planned for the party was unavailable and a magician was booked instead. Cindy also reported about 114 were expected at the Christmas dinner and dance and prize donations for draws at the dinner and dance would be very welcome.

Sick Committee

No sick committee report was given as Richard Kearley was unable to attend. A card was received from Albert Ford thanking Richard for his recent visit.

New Business

Applications were received for 2 new members. The first from Frank (Mary Lynn) Murray was accepted without further comment. The second from Chris (Sandra) Smith will be held over until the January meeting for a decision.

Harold Howlett informed those present arrangements have been made with the Royal Canadian Legion regarding the usage and storage of the BBQ’s owned by NACCC. The Legion will store the BBQ’s and will be permitted to use them for their own functions. A discount on the NACCC regular monthly room rental might be given if the BBQ’s are used by the Legion. All agreed this was a good arrangement if the BBQ’s are maintained in good condition.

Legion management informed NACCC they will be setting up a suitable place for the NACCC memorabilia.

Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30p.m. on a motion from Connie Hilliard, seconded by Ed Farrell, Jr. ______Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club Regular Monthly Meeting January 9, 2008 Executive in Attendance

______Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 6

The meeting opened at 8:05pm with 31 members in attendance. Minutes of the December 12 th . meeting were read by Jack Hill, adopted on a motion from Barb Tucker, and seconded by Jim Kennell.

Social Events Update

Cindy reported on the Christmas dinner and dance. She thanked members who donated gifts for the stocking and acknowledged the Capital Hotel for donating a night’s accommodation as the door prize. NACCC picked up the cost of a dinner for two. Cindy said she heard a couple of complaints regarding the music at the dance, but the members present said they had no problems. It was noted by several that Bob Smart is very accommodating and will play whatever is asked of him. Cindy said the Legion was only available for November 29, 2008 for the 2008 Christmas dinner and dance. All present agreed with this date. February 23 is booked for the roast beef dinner and dance and a Chinese supper is still being considered for March.

A question arose as to why we are having a catered supper in February rather than a BBQ. Jack explained this was mainly due to the cold weather in February and because there was very little help when it comes to clean up and storage of the BBQs. This issue was discussed thoroughly last year and a decision was made at that time.

Sick Committee

Richard reported Pat Finlay had another coronary procedure but has now left for a couple of months in Florida. Doug O’Reilly had surgery and is doing much better and Jackie Walsh is recuperating at home after being in hospital. He also acknowledged Jim Kennell’s daughter who is very ill. Jack expressed well wishes to Jim and his family from the club.

New Business

Jack apologized for not being available for the last meeting and thanked Vice-President, Harold Howlett for conducting the meeting.

An application from Chris Smith owner of a 1967 Pontiac was brought back to the table. Jack said he would call Chris for more information on the car and will inform the members at the next meeting.

Correspondence

Robert Wallis asked to have pictures of his recently-purchased car put on the website. This is a 1990 Chrysler and not yet an antique. Members present stated the rules set out in the NACCC Constitution must be upheld and this car at the present time does not qualify to be included in the Club roster.

Jack informed members that the Landrover is finally finished. He expressed his thanks to George Penney and Nels Wilkins for their time and effort spent on the project.

______Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 7

Easter Seals Visit

Jack welcomed Mr. Brent Smith of Easter Seals to the meeting. Mr. Smith thanked everyone for giving him the opportunity to address the meeting and offered to answer any questions. He felt it was unfortunate that donations to Easter Seals had dropped over the past couple of years. Bob Ford spoke of one show at which no profit was made yet some members combined personal money and made a donation of $500.

Many members feel the car show is losing its original purpose as a social event and that it is now more about fundraising. One member thought the atmosphere last year was much better and everyone had fun during the show.

Members asked Mr. Smith why NACCC is not getting very much recognition for its contributions. Mr. Smith presented an Easter Seals annual report showing where NACCC was included as a gold sponsor.

Another member asked why Easter Seals had sold only a few tickets for the 2007 car show. Mr. Smith had an issue regarding a portion of the proceeds going to VOCM. He said he has little interest in other charities and his main concern is for Easter Seals.

Another member said there was very little representation by Easter Seals at the Bergs Run and the car show last year. Mr. Smith said this was because of the lack of communication between the two parties. He felt it would be a good idea to have a contact person in NACCC to improve communication. Jack said the Social Director, Cindy Howlett, would be the best contact person. One member also suggested some kids from Easter Seals could take part in advertising for the show.

After Mr. Smith left the meeting, Jack said discussion of donations would be revisited at future meetings.

Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45p.m. with a motion from Jim Kennell, seconded by Richard Kearley.

Scholarship Fund

Two applications have been received for our scholarship fund. The Scholarship Committee is presently reviewing these applications and a decision is expected by the March monthly meeting.

National Association of Antique Automobile Clubs of Canada Corporation (NAAACCC)

The annual meeting of NAAACCC took place in Toronto during November 23-24, 2007 with provincial representatives from all provinces except Quebec.

We had a full agenda with discussion on road salt corrosion, trailer safety, environment and pollution from clunker or beater .

The Executive Board is actively researching HANSARD and government bills in provinces for events that negatively affect our hobby.

Our website www.naaaccc.ca is a very informative source of information for the hobbyist and updates are done on a regular basis.

At our meeting we had two guests from SEMA. They are the largest hobby group in the USA and we agreed they could be of great benefit to our group. After much discussion it was agreed to join forces to help protect our hobby.

There was some discussion about our name. The National Association of Antique Automobile Clubs of Canada Corp. now has many hot rod clubs and drag racing clubs along with other truck and performance clubs. This issue is still up in the air but I would like to just drop the word antique from the logo and we would still be recognized quite readily without starting over with a new name and logo.

Fraser Field, one of the Coast to Coast 2000 tour, is organizing another tour for July and August 2010. He has had good response and has 100 couples on a list to register. This will certainly be the trip of a lifetime for anyone wanting to see Canada with a group of antique car people. This tour will start in St. John’s. This summer there will be a re-union of the 2000 tour participants in Brandon, Manitoba. Fraser is also organizing this event. If you are interested, he can be contacted at 604-826-6826.

This is going to be a busy year for us all.
