Objectives The “China module” of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) is organized by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern (SUPSI), and the University of Applied Science of (ZHAW). The course gives MSE students the opportunity to live a direct on-site experience of the Chinese industry, by showing the difficulties for the Swiss industry to enter the local market and by highlighting the possibilities to overcome those problems. The module also aims at bridging the cultural differences between MSE students and at facilitating their mutual cooperation. Contents The program is composed by seminars and visits to industrial companies in Switzerland, Shanghai, Suzhou, Changzhou, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Shenzhen for a total of 4 days spent in Switzerland and 2 weeks in China (including Saturdays).

To facilitate a high comprehension of the Chinese economic, technological and social development, by keeping in consideration the different backgrounds of the students, the subjects of the seminars have a broad range, including: • Total productive maintenance and experience of implementation in China; • Logistics in global supply chains of international manufacturing industries; • Setting up successful quality manufacturing in China; • Relation between quality and the culture in Asia; • Sustainable innovation and innovation for sustainability; • Chinese culture; • Chinese economy and China’s special economic zone; • Swiss precision in China for the die and mould industry; • Battery electric vehicle: development and present status, opportunities for Sino- Swiss cooperation;

Furthermore, the course organizes visits to Chinese and foreign owned companies, covering different sectors such as electronics, hardware, shoes, medical instruments, watches, machine tools, textile machines, plastics, logistics, etc. Prerequisites, previous knowledge, entrance competencies Literature "Country Driving: A Journey Through China from Farm to Factory" by Peter Hessler "Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China" by Leslie T.
