Money matters I am not very good with money. I mean, I am very good at spending it – but that is about all. Thank goodness for the treasurer’s office and the Finance Division. Atara, the buck stops with you, and it is a buck with an ever decreasing value against the shekel. In the UK we say, 'it is a tough job but someone has to do it'. Spiralling expenses and unfavourable exchange rates, all in the balance sheet: WIZO does not have the cushion of reserves to fall back on – unpalatable decisions for tough times. However, one area is in for a little bonus, and it is about time. At last some money is going to be found for the Publicity and Communications Department which is so ably headed by Zipi Amiri. Top-class speakers motivate The World WIZO Executive always manages to secure first class speakers to address us at the MOR. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yigal Palmor outlined the day to day problems faced by 800 foreign correspondents who keep Israel under a magnifying glass. He ran us through the fast and changing news gathering wonder that is Internet and told us, 'You state your case in two minutes, or not at all'. Who amongst us could not fail to be moved by our graduate from WIZO Hadassim, Advocate Nachum Feinberg, a top flight lawyer renowned for his expertise on labour laws, who shared his life changing experience with us, leaving him speechless, and us moved to tears. SPRING SUMMER 2011 I WIZO REVIEW I 13 Meeting of Representatives WIZO MAGIC MOMENTS

At every WIZO conference, seminar or event, the unexpected always occurs, those never-to-be-forgotten WIZO magic moments. This year’s Meeting of Representatives was no exception…

Thank you, Hadassim It is not every day that you see a leading figure in the legal world overcome with emotion. But, that is exactly what happened when Nahum Feinberg, one of Israel’s leading labour lawyers and a pupil at WIZO’s Hadassim School 55 years ago, started to address the delegates. When he recovered his composure he told his WIZO story: ‘I was a wild child,’ he told the audience, ‘hyper-active and uncontrollable. The local police told my parents that if they did not do something with me, for sure I would turn out a criminal. Luckily, my parents heard about Hadassim and I attended the school for four years, aged 10-14. It is a miracle what they did with me and my friends there. When I returned to the city, no one could believe it was the same child. I cannot thank WIZO enough, they gave me my life.’

An emotional Nahum Feinberg

WIZO full circle After she retired as a school principal in 1994, Alona Shtrum volunteered for WIZO in Beersheva, where she eventually became chairperson. One day she saw a film about the Jerusalem Baby Home (now the Rebecca Sieff Centre for the Family), and saw a photo of some children in cots. She suddenly remembered a similar photo of herself… fortunately the Baby Home keeps meticulous records and archives and, on checking the files with director Kobi Hillel, she found she had indeed been in the home when she was about a year old because of family problems. ‘Finding these records, closed a circle in my life – WIZO the voice of life, all my life!’ However, that is not the whole story of Alona. She was chairperson of WIZO Beersheva at the time of the Ethiopian immigration to Israel. She organized volunteers in WIZO Beersheva to help the new immigrants as much as possible. But, Alona and her family went one step further. They legally adopted an Ethiopian little girl, and nurtured her through childhood, fully accepting her as a family member. Today, the ‘little Ethiopian girl’ is a qualified lawyer and is getting married this coming August. Alona Shtrum telling her story

14 I SPRING SUMMER 2011 I WIZO REVIEW Jewish chicken soup to the rescue! Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor started his presentation by apologizing for his husky (some said ‘sexy’ ) voice: ‘I have been really sick, and did not think I would make it here today, but I felt it is so important to address you WIZO ladies, that I made a huge effort to come.’ As he progressed with his presentation about dealing with Israel’s foreign press corps, WIZO ladies sprang into action, and within a few minutes a steaming bowl of chicken soup, fresh from the Hilton’s kitchen, appeared by his side! ‘Wow,’ said Palmor, ‘I will never forget this morning when all you Jewish mothers came to my rescue.’ Right: Yigal Palmor and the chicken soup!

A cut above the rest One of the perks of visiting the WIZO vocational school at the Rebecca Sieff Centre for the Family in Jerusalem, is possibly having a quick ‘blow dry’ from one of the students studying hairdressing. This happened to WIZO US Co-President Gail Perl on a recent visit to Israel, where one of the students, Matan Yerushalmi, also admired Gail’s WIZO pin. Gail was delighted to see Matan telling delegates at the MOR about his story, and promptly presented him with a WIZO pin! Matan told the delegates of his difficult childhood. His parents separated when he was only a year old. From quite a young age he was problematic; he smoked, drank alcohol, and became involved with petty criminals. He was destined for a life ‘on the wrong side of the tracks’, but was fortunate to attend the WIZO school in Bet Hakerem and learn hairdressing. He was apprenticed to a Jerusalem hairdresser who was prepared to help him, but at first Matan proved to be unreliable and violent. Eventually, Matan gave up his Gail Perl presenting Matan with the WIZO pin criminal friends, settled down, and today has a good job. He is looking forward to going into the army this coming August – as a hairdresser, the profession he learnt at WIZO.

Graduate stories from Maya Rosenberg School Visiting our projects is always one of the highlights of any WIZO conference. Our visit to The WIZO Municipal Technological High School in the name of Maya Rosenberg in Rehovot did not disappoint. Most moving was meeting with school graduates who described how the school had ‘saved their lives.’ Yossi, now 39, left the school 20 years ago – he admitted he was not a great student at the school: ‘I spent a lot of the time outside!’ But, with maturity, Yossi realized what opportunities the school had given him and changed his ways: he has recently completed his second degree at Bar WIZO Maya Rosenberg School graduates relate their Ilan University with the highest grades, and will shortly heartwarming stories embark on his PhD. He still keeps close contact with the school –one of the teachers is his mentor. Irena left the school about five years ago, and is now was quite young. ‘All the teachers here were like mothers studying chemical engineering. She publicly thanked one to me. When I started at the school they told me I would of the teachers ‘who was like a mother to me.’ graduate with a full matriculation. I did not believe them – Shai left only two years ago; his mother had died when he but I did!’
