http://camra-angle.co.uk OCTOBERFEST 2011 3 Welcome to the third Sunderland Octoberfest THE Sunderland and South Tyneside Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale welcome you to the third Sunderland Octoberfest. We have gathered together a selection of beer styles from around the country. There are a number of old favourites and beers from new breweries and new beers from established breweries. You should find something to suit your taste. Our volunteer staff have tried all of the beers and will be able to help you make your selection and will give you a small taste of any beer, so don’t be afraid to ask. CAMRA has designated October national cider month and we have assembled a range of ciders. LocAle A new campaign by CAMRA has the aim of promoting local beers in local pubs. For our purposes, we class local as beers produced in the counties of Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland within 30 miles of the point of sale. These beers are located at beginning of the bar and are marked Locale in the beer list. How it works YOU will need a glass. These are available for sale if you wish to keep it as a souvenir, or you can return it and get your money back. You will also need beer tokens. All beers and ciders are one price and one token will get you a half pint. You can buy extra tokens at any time and get a refund for any unused tokens. No cash will be taken at the bar and beer must be paid for using beer tokens. Please do not put our volunteers in an awkward position by asking them to take cash. A Note About The Offers In This Year’s Programme SOME of our sponsors are providing generous discounts off the purchase of real ale in their outlets. Please note the following instructions and conditions. The discount is available for the purchase of real ale or cider only and is available on production of this programme. Photocopies or cut-outs will not be accepted. Each offer can be used once and is valid from 7th October to 31st October 2011. Please hand your programme to the participating outlet who will place their mark across the relevant entry. These discounts cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Each outlet reserves the right to withdraw their offer at any time. Thank you’s n Local CAMRA members who have given up their free time to help before, during or after the festival. n Linda Huxtable and the staff at the Bonded Warehouse for their help and co-operation. n All local publicans who displayed our publicity material. n Our friends from Tyneside & Northumberland CAMRA for the loan of hand pumps and cooling equipment. n All who sponsored beer. n Mark Anderson and Maxim Brewery for transport, storing our equipment, donation of beer and sponsoring the festival T-Shirts. n Mary Dade from Boggart HoleClough for sourcing the beer. n Jarrow Brewery (Maltings, Robin Hood and Isis)

Originally all cider fitted this description, but today the majority of cider available in pubs, clubs and supermarkets is made from apple concentrate and is artificially carbonated, pasteurised and served under gas pressure. Perry is a drink so difficult to find that most people don’t even know it exists or even worse associate it with the new pear cider concentrate drinks that are commonly available! Real perry is made in the same way as real cider but from perry pears. There is a big demand for perry but producers cannot make enough of it because there is not enough good quality fruit available. It takes three years for a perry pear tree in the right conditions to bear fruit, but up to thirty years before it is at full maturity.
