The Trustees and Management of the Ummah Foundation want to thank each and every member of our Ummah who has directly or indirectly assisted us by contributing their time, talents and financial resources to enable us to uplift Ummah in various fields of human endeavours but especially for education both religious and secular. We pray to Allah s.w.t. to reward all our brothers and sisters without whose efforts and sacrifice we would not be able to present this activity report.

Of course the need for funds is huge and urgent. We are pleased to report that more and more brothers and sisters are now being conscious of their personal responsibility to assist other less fortunate members of our community. Education Bursaries

Ummah Foundation is a not for profit charitable organisation that was started in 2006 and over the years has been actively involved in a number of activities in the service of Ummah. Our special emphasis is both secular and religious education. We believe education is the most important and urgent need of our community. It is only through education, we can empower the Ummah to play its rightful role in social, economic and political fields. It is a well recognised and proven strategy to break the cycle of poverty of any community.

We also focus on strengthening educational systems to ensure all young people receive an education that enables them to engage in meaningful work and contribute as citizens in diverse societies.

We work with organizations that produce compelling new thinking and evidence; promote effective and scalable practices; and communicate, advocate, and build the capacity for reform. We fund initiatives designed to transform the quality of secondary schools and help students from poor or marginalized communities gain access to quality higher education.

Our higher education efforts support greater access and affordability, and innovations that increase the likelihood that student will earn degrees and transform their livelihood.

The Secretary General of Ummah Foundation Brother Zool Nimji presents a to a university Engineering student Sister Ashrafa Athman Seif who has benefitted from the Education Bursary Scheme. She is the only Muslim female student in the Engineering faculty.

Br Mohamed Dida Abduba, a Muslim Scholar and a Presidential Aspirant at the just concluded General Elections in Kenya presented 2 on behalf of Muslim Care of UK to firstly Br. Ibrahim Said, chairman of Dar-ul-Irshad towards the completion of their workshop project for the Reverts Centre at Nguluni for Sh 500,000/= being part payment of a donation of Stg Pounds 5,000.00 and a second cheque to a representative of Mosomo Foundation, Denial Osha for Sh796,390/- being proceeds from Stg Pounds 6,200.00 for school fees bursaries for deserving Muslim Students with good results. Dr. Muttah Juma Guni is a graduate of the University of , Bachelor of Medicine and surgery and former beneficiary of Ummah Foundation Bursary program. He hails from Kwale county, Coast Region. This program has now taken root and it is our hope and anticipation that more schools will be incorporated in the program so that students can benefit from it. Ummah Foundation has also taken the initiative of involving several volunteers from various schools to help the program achieve its ultimate goal.

6 UMMAH FOUNDATION Religious Education - Madrassah Program

Prince Kassim Nakibinge of Buganda Kingdom had the honour to visit one of our Madrassahs and with him is the Executive Officer of Ummah Foundation –Uganda Office Brother Muhammad Katotto , Brother Zool Nimji, the Secretary General of Ummah Foundation and the Maalim of the Madrassa. The pupils were examined by the Prince in various fields Imam Hussein Kassim on an inspection tour of the madrassah in of their studies. Ummah Foundation runs five Madrassahs in Magadi, . He is incharge of the Madrassah Program and makes frequent Kisumu, Gilgil, and Maili Tisa in Namanga. visits to the Madrassahs for monitoring and evaluation purposes. The Imam also conducts school spiritual programs on every Sunday. Some of the schools that he visited are Lenana, Alliance Boys and Girls and Religious education has been lacking behind for reasons well Nairobi School. known though no Organisation has taken the initiative to correct the situation. Ummah Foundation took the onus of initiating the Madrassah Program so that Religious Education can be given just much honour and respect like the secular education. Over the years teachers of these Madrassahs have been taken through a formal training that captures issues of child psychology, teaching methodologies and curriculum development. Results have been noticed in the Madrassahs where this system is being implemented.

ANNUAL ACTIVITIES 2012 7 Women Affairs Ummah Foundation hosted the world re-owned Muslim scholar and motivational speaker Br. Sadattullah Khan of India. This was in a three day workshop that brought together more than 150 Muslim women from all walks of life to this great event that was branded “DISCOVER YOURSELF”.

Surprisingly quite a large number of non Muslims attended the workshop and requested Ummah Foundation to arrange similar workshops more frequently.

The Revertee seminar brought together more than five hundred families that had embraced Islam in the recent years. Sister Maryam is also closely involved with schools especially the girls’ secondary schools where she does mentoring and counselling programs to help our youth.

Ramadhan and Relief Program

She could not manage to move or even raise herself from her sitting position. He suffered from a stroke that impaired his lower abdomen and legs. His hands were determined by a doctor to be strong enough and the Doctor recommended a wheel chair. Ummah Foundation was handy and he can now move around on his own with very minimal help.

ANNUAL ACTIVITIES 2012 13 Prisoners Rehabilitation Program

14 UMMAH FOUNDATION Udhuhiyyah (Qurbani) Program

In observation of the tradition of our beloved Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Ummah Foundation is been of the practice to celebrate this eventful day – Eid-ul-Adh’a by slaughtering animals as sunnah of our prophets (AS) and the meat is distributed among poor families in the informal settlements. This year, Ummah Foundation in collaboration with Jamia Central Mosque of Southall – UK, slaughtered 60 goats and the meat was donated to various mosques across Nairobi. Some of the villages that benefitted from the meat distribution are , , Majengo Home for the Old, , , and Kigothoro, slums. More than 200 families were beneficiaries of the sacrificial project.

ANNUAL ACTIVITIES 2012 15 Literature Distribution: Ummah Foundation distributed copies of the English Translation of the Holy Quran to the Neptune Group of Hotels that consists of; Neptune Beach Resort Bamburi, Neptune Village Diani, Neptune Paradise Diani, Neptune Palm Beach Resort Diani, Neptune Pwani Beach Resort and Spa Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Ummah Foundation also distributed five hundred copies of the English translated Quran to Southern Palm & Bamburi Beach Hotel.

Ummah Foundation continues to provide copies of the English translated Quran to the Serena Group of Hotels in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda and the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.

Ummah Foundation received a consignment of Islamic literature from Brother Suhail Kapoor of Canada. Several of his books like; “Darkness to Light” and “Islam Balancing Life and Beyond” have been distributed to various organisations and institutions throughout the East African region. We also received a donation of books from Brother Abdulaziz Moledina of Canada. He is the author of “A Brief Survey of the Basic Teachings of Islam”. Many of his books were distributed by Ummah Foundation especially to the revertees.

Brother Fauz Qureishi presented 400 copies of the Holy Quran to Sister Sheena Merali, a director of the Neptune Hotel Group and Sentido Hotels & Resorts. 16 UMMAH FOUNDATION Magadi Mosque Rehabilitation

This Mosque in Magadi town was built during 1901 or thereabouts. It was built for Muslim workers living in Magadi engaged in building of the railway passing through the village. This was one of the first Muslim Mosque in the interior of Kenya.

Magadi Soda Company is now owned by Tata Group of Companies. The Mosque has not been recently maintained and has developed structural faults. Ummah Foundation has been in consultation with the Tata Group of Companies to rehabilitate and renovate the Mosque for posterity.
