The 2014-15 schedule presents challenges not only from the Nov. 19 date at Brigham Young but also the CAC, a league in which the Knights earned four victo- ries a year ago.

facebook.com/svuknights “This year’s schedule is difficult because the conference is so tough,” Caputo said. “Eighteen of our 25 games, or three-fourths, are league games so it will be a tough and challenging schedule. Most of our non-league schedule is against ODAC competition, which is a really solid conference just like ours. Teams like Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite should prepare us well for the CAC.” @svuknights With so many new names on the team, Caputo understands the importance of chemistry to form a tight unit heading into this season. “I think we’re a really close group,” he said. “We had a recent service activity put- ting on a youth basketball clinic and saw how well the guys worked together to @svuknights make it happen. I think they’re a close group and seem to like each other.” The season kicks off Saturday, Nov. 15, at Emory & Henry College.

#svuknights#svuknights 15 15 Eaton Excited for Trip to BYU Mapleton, Utah native is older brother of BYU women’s basketball player Lexi Eaton, has personal connections to former, current Cougars

By Daniel Whitehead

BUENA VISTA, Va.—When Southern Virginia University senior point guard Preston Eaton meets new people in the LDS basketball community, a com- mon response is ‘Wait, isn’t there an Eaton on the BYU women’s basketball team?’

Preston is quick and proud to acknowledge that he does have a younger sister, Lexi, a junior on the BYU women’s team. Last season, Lexi finished the year as the team’s second leading scorer with 16.8 points per game and was the Cougars’ best free throw shooter at 83 percent to help BYU to a Sweet 16 appearance at the NCAA tournament.

“I’m known as Lexi’s big brother and people associate me with her,” Pres- ton laughs. “People always ask how she’s doing. I enjoy answering because she and I are close and always sharing notes about basketball games and helping each other improve. I’m there for her when she has a rough game or when she has a good game. I keep her level and she does the same for me.”

Not only is Preston the older sibling to a Cougar women’s basketball player, but he also has personal connections to several former or current Cougar men’s basketball players.

Following Eaton’s senior year at Springville High (2006-07), he was named the state scoring champion over Tyler Haws, then a sophomore at Lone Peak.

Preston also played AAU ball with current Cougar Skyler Halford for the Nike Swoosh traveling team.

“Skyler and I redshirted at Utah State before we both took the junior college route and we both ended up at LDS four-year schools,” Eaton said. “We’ve both been able to have a lot of success in our journeys. We took different paths but I feel I can relate a lot to him.

“I grew up going to BYU basketball camps competing against a lot of those guys, I read about them, and Lexi’s always telling me what’s going on for both the men’s and women’s teams over there.”

In high school, Eaton’s Springville High always faced former Cougar Chris Collinsworth from Provo High. Having played AAU ball with Chris Collinsworth, Eaton frequently saw Collinsworth’s younger brother, Kyle, now a power forward for the Cougars.

“I watched Kyle growing up since he was always in the gym when I was with Chris,” Eaton says. “He used to be a tiny little guard and now he’s huge. It’s fun watching the success he’s had since that time. It brings back a lot of good memories playing with Chris.”

Preston has other connections to BYU’s program, including AAU competitions against former Cougars Charles Abouo and Jim- mer Fredette.

“I know a lot of former and current BYU players and I have good connections there,” Eaton said. “I appreciate how Coach Rose runs his program and how strong it is. He’s really done a nice job and I respect the accomplishments he’s made the past 10 years.”

Regardless of the outcome of the game, Eaton is excited to be heading home to play in the Marriott Center in front of friends and family.

His wife, Kaitlyn, will make the trip from Buena Vista, as well. Kaitlyn just completed her senior season on the Southern Virginia women’s volleyball team as a star middle blocker, leading the Knights to a 21-9 record and third-place finish in the Capital Ath- letic Conference tournament.

“It’s going to be a great environment against a really good team, but I think we’re going in with the mindset to just play good basketball and do our best,” he said. “Coach Caputo has done a really good job recruiting for this year and we have some good players on our team.

“It’s exciting to play at that level and a great opportunity for our school. To play in this type of game my senior year and just 15 minutes from home, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

16 16#svuknights #svukights Taylor Larson to Fulfill Dream Playing in the Marriott Center

By Nick Porter

Growing up in Highland, Utah, freshman forward Taylor Larson was known as Russell Larson’s kid. Russ Larson is a BYU basketball legend who finished his BYU career with a .556 field goal percentage, tied for fifth all- time, and helped the Cougars to three NCAA Tournament appearances in the early 90’s.

“It was pretty cool to tell people my dad was one of the greats for BYU,” Taylor said. “I always looked up to him and he was always pushing me into basketball.”

For many years Taylor was under pressure from friends and coaches to be like his dad.

“I definitely had a lot of pressure, and at some points I felt like I was put on a pedestal because everyone knew my dad and expected me to be him.”

Even in the sixth grade, Taylor remembers being at the court by his home in the summer and his dad saying, “You’ve got to get 1,000 shots off today.”

Taylor remembers in ninth grade his dad asked him a defining question.

“Do you like playing basketball?” the two-time All-WAC performer asked.

Taylor responded quickly, “I love it.”

Russell responded, “Then for you to succeed in the way you want to succeed, you have to have one thing: passion.”

“That’s probably the biggest thing he taught me in basketball and in life,” Taylor said. “He taught me that if I didn’t love what I was doing or didn’t enjoy it, then it isn’t worth doing. So I learned to love the game, I learned to love defense and to love what I’m doing.”

Taylor followed his love for what he was doing when he made a crucial decision his senior year of high school.

“I just said, ‘I’m my own player, my dad is my dad and I’m not my dad.’ I kind of took myself off that pedestal,” Larson said.

The 6-4 forward, who plays a different position than his dad, continued.

“My dad never forced me to play basketball. He told me that if I don’t love it then it probably wasn’t my number one priority.”

But Taylor loved it, and loved being mentored by his dad.

“Being able to play at the Marriott Center means everything,” he said. “Growing up, I always wanted to play at BYU. It’s like a life- long dream come true, and even though it’s not with a Cougar jersey on, I’m even more excited that it’s with a Knight jersey.”
