Hatton: I'm a Little Older, a Lot Wiser 27/11/2012 Hatton: I’m a little older, a lot wiser Boxing News 24 hours/day Reload often! | UPDATED TODAY [email protected] Continuously updated all day, every day! Home Boxing Schedule Boxing Rankings Boxing Press Links Boxing Results Español Fightnews Team BOXING NEWS Hatton: I’m a little older, a lot wiser By Robert Hough Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, who returns to the ring Saturday after 3½ tumultuous years, vowed Monday that however far and long his comeback goes, there’s clean – or at least considerably cleaner – living ahead in the months and years ahead. Hatton (452, 32 KOs) will face former WBA welterweight titleholder Vyacheslav Senchenko (321, 21 KOs) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, in a 10round welterweight fight that will be broadcast on Showtime. “I was known for ballooning up, putting on 30 or 40 pounds between fights” said the 34yearold who openly enjoyed long nights and food that would give a cardiologist a heart attack. “It was absolutely criminal for me to do that at 24 years of age. I can’t be doing that at 34 years of age. I’m becoming older, becoming wiser.” If things go well on Saturday, the plan is to keep active and fit, and fight more than twice a year, the native and resident of Manchester, England said in a raw, candid conversation. Hatton stepped away from the sport and spoke of falling apart after Manny Pacquiao decimated him with a nasty secondround knockout on May 2, 2009. “It was hard for a man who had so much pride in himself to get destroyed by Manny Pacquiao,” he said. There were suicide attempts, a nervous breakdown, a moment when his girlfriend took a knife from him when he was trying to slit his wrists, days and nights full of tears, he said. “I was having to tell my girlfriend, ‘I need a hug. Help me, please, I’m scared.’” About six months ago, the comeback plans took shape as life improved mentally and physically, Hatton said. “I feel I’ve let a lot of people down and I’m here to put a lot of ghosts and feelings to rest,” he said. So far, so good – surprisingly good in fact, Hatton said. “I’m doing better than ever in the gym,” he said. “I was a bit surprised. I don’t expect people to believe that, but I hope they’ll give me a chance. I wondered what it would feel like the first time I got hit on the chin and the first time I got hit on the chin, I liked it.” There will be more of the same aggressive style, Hatton promised, with a little more intelligence. “Ultimately my aggressiveness and overaggressiveness landed me in trouble against Floyd Mayweather and Manny. I live by the sword and die by the sword so I’ll be going 100 miles an hour, but I’ve got to be smarter and show a little more maturity.” Contact the author November 19th, 2012 For all the latest boxing news, click here. www.fightnews.com/Boxing/hatton‑im‑a‑little‑older‑a‑lot‑wiser‑150191 1/2 27/11/2012 Hatton: I’m a little older, a lot wiser 11 comments Add a comment Evan Price · Top Commenter Hatton is going to have a huge target on his forehead for young guns wanting to make a name for themselves. Someone like Rios or Trout probably. He SHOULD just fight this guy, then maybe Junior Witter, and maybe try luring De La Hoya into a big money finale. • Joshua's Heavyweight Title Defence Postponed by Coronavirus Outbreak
18 Established 1961 Sports Sunday, April 5, 2020 Photo of the day NFL could move 2024 Super Bowl due to Mardi Gras NEW ORLEANS: The NFL is considering moving the 2024 Super Bowl out of New Orleans due to potential conflicts with Mardis Gras that emerged with the pending expansion to a 17-game season. New Orleans, which was awarded Super Bowl LVIII during a meeting in 2018, would not lose the game entirely, but rather have it pushed back a year or two. No decision has been made. The game is scheduled for Feb. 4, but that date was set with a 16-game NFL schedule. If a week were to be added to the schedule, the game would be played on Feb. 11 — presenting a conflict with Mardi Gras begin- ning on Feb. 13. “The New Orleans Host Committee, led by the New Orleans Saints and Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, has remained in close communication with league officials about the change to a 17-game regular season, as it relates to the city hosting Super Bowl LVIII in 2024,” Saints vice president of communica- tions Greg Bensel said in a statement on Friday. “During the bid process in 2018, it was contemplated and discussed of the possibility of an extended sched- ule based on a new CBA. The Bid Committee, the New Orleans Saints and NFL worked together to build in contingencies if a potential conflict with Mardi Gras should affect the Super Bowl date. “Mutually agreed upon terms during the bid process granted assurances that the NFL and Host Committee would explore all options for still hosting the game in 2024, or, agreeing to host the Super Bowl in a future year when the citywide calendar permits.” The 17-game schedule, per terms of the new collec- tive bargaining agreement, will be installed as the norm sometime between 2021 and 2023.

More importantly, the Hall is the institution of record for rewarding meritorious service in the sweet science – the honor-bestower to which inductees keep returning in Canastota, New York every June. It ain’t perfect, but it’s still the place to be. Because fighters’ careers are fluid, shifts can be sudden and settled law is open to smudging at a later date, there are few foregone conclusions among active IBHOF candidates-in-waiting. The list: Manny Pacquiao, Roman Gonzalez, Nonito Donaire, Terence Crawford, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Canelo Alvarez. That’s it. But what of the rest? Which other current fighters have a shot? And what about those in for a rude awakening, boxing’s faux royalty? In the wake of the 2019 Hall of Fame Weekend, we sort out the most interesting cases in the pages ahead – the shoo-ins, the fence-sitters and the emperors with no clothes.

  • Rhodes: Rabchenko Dangerous – but Brook Can Stop Him
RHODES: RABCHENKO DANGEROUS – BUT BROOK CAN STOP HIM Ryan Rhodes knows first-hand the threat that Sergey Rabchenko poses to Kell Brook as they clash for the WBC Silver Super- Welterweight title on Saturday night at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield live on Sky Sports – but expects Brook to shine on his debut at 154lbs. Sheffield star Rhodes met the Belarussian in June 2012 for the European Super-Welterweight title in Manchester, with Rabchenko stopping Rhodes with a body shot at the end of the seventh round. Rabchenko now meets Rhodes’ fellow Steel City son Brook in ‘The Special One’s’ first fight at him new weight, and the ‘Spice Boy’ expects his fellow Ingle Gym product to prevail but says Rabchenko is a dangerous customer. “Rabchenko is a good fighter,” said Rhodes. “He’s strong, got a bit of a dig on him and when he’s on song he’s a handful. He was on a bit of a high when I boxed him, Ricky Hatton was looking after him at the time and was keeping him active. “Sergey can take a shot as well. I caught him with a big shot in the third round and his legs dipped but credit to him – he rode the storm and ended up recovering to get the win. “I was 95 years old and in my 293rd fight when I fought Rabchenko, so Kell has nothing to worry about! I was coming to the latter stages of my career. There wasn’t much in the fight, it was back and forth and then he caught me with a sickening body shot.

  • PPV Report Might Knock Canelo Off the A-Side
PPV report might knock Canelo off the A-side By Norm Frauenheim So who is the A-side now? In a not-so-surprising report, Canelo Alvarez’ crown as the reigning pay-per-view king got knocked sideways, if not completely off his redhead, with news that the PPV audience for his victory over Liam Smith last Saturday is not expected to be bigger than 300,000. The Los Angeles Times reported the news, citing sources who blamed the disappointing number on mounting frustration at Canelo, who has yet to agree to a fight with Gennady Golovkin. Meanwhile, Golovkin’s victory on Sept. 10 over Kell Brook, a British welterweight fighting at middleweight, was a PPV success in the UK with a reported audience of 500,000. The Canelo-Smith fight was promoted as a way to showcase Canelo at AT&T Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys home field, during a celebration of Mexican Independence. The live gate was considered a success. In terms of leverage in potential negotiations for Canelo- Golovkin, however, the key is in the PPV numbers. Golovkin appeared to gain a significant edge at London’s sold-out O2 Arena against a fighter, Brook, better-known in the hot UK market than Smith. Meanwhile, chances of Golovkin-Canelo appear to be as uncertain as ever. Canelo suffered a fractured thumb during his business-like stoppage of Smith in a junior-middleweight bout. That means he won’t fight in December, as has been planned. His next appearance could be in early May as part of the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, but it’s safe to say it won’t be against Golovkin.
