By MARQUITA GRIFFIN | [email protected]

Theatre is more than performing on stage in George Ranch’s Longhorn Theatre’s Department. Theater is about challenges and growth for the students who have pushed the program beyond the typical expectations of a high school theatre department. “It seems that, every year, I choose a musical based on the needs of the students,” said George Ranch Theatre Director L. Jay Edenmeyer. “I have said before, if I just pick stuff they know or they can easily do, they are not learning and growing, and neither am I. So, we do music-heavy shows to build voices, and dance-heavy shows to build dancers.” On Jan. 12, the Longhorn Theater will debut its production Into the Woods, which can be easily argued as Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s most popular work. The story takes a collage of fairy tale characters, grants them everything they ever wanted, and then proceeds to provide the cautionary tale of: Careful what you wish for. “‘Wishes come true, not free.’ This might be my favorite line in a show filled with favorite lines,” Edenmeyer said. “It serves as a reminder that we are more than capable of making wishes come true, but, as has oft been said, be careful what you wish.”
