HOT FOOD Manager Pat McGuire gives his thoughts for the week: ¼ lb Cheese Burger £2.40 Good evening and welcome to Dennyfield for our long-awaited season opener against Albion Sports. ¼lb Burger £2.10 Albion are buoyed by a new management team and a host of new players; added to the fact it’s a local derby and the first league game of the season, I think we can all expect a blood and thunder encounter. Giant Hotdog £2.10 Pre-season is officially over now and it’s fantastic to be back playing for points and prizes again. We Chip Butty £1.90 managed to attract some high calibre teams to play us such as BPA, Guiseley and FC United - where Tray of Chips £1.30 we recorded our best result in a 4-0 win. On paper, pre-season results were nothing to write home about and although I wanted us to win every game – by the morning after I couldn’t care less. For us, SUNDRIES it’s about making us organised, giving players game time for fitness and trying to implement new things Chocolate Bars £0.80 which we don’t expect players to get consistently right within 45 minutes. Making a large number of substitutes disjoints you as a team and everyone is out to impress individually. In addition, poor results HOT DRINKS and performances make my life a lot easier, as we have a large squad and those not doing the Tea £1.10 business are easier to leave out of the 16 when the season comes around. Obviously people are disappointed to be left out and I welcome that, but they have to be honest with themselves and think Coffee £1.20 hard about what impact they’re having when they play and train and who’s in front of them and why. Bovril £1.30 The staggered start to the season has been less than ideal with a two week break after our FA Cup exit Soup £1.30 over in Runcorn. In what wasn’t a classy performance, we were unlucky not to go in 2-0 up at the break Hot Chocolate £1.30 and it was a sickener not to take the game to penalties, with Kieran Holsgrove, newly signed from Liverpool, hitting a late winner. I feel we could be hard pushed to face a better side than Runcorn this COLD DRINKS year, with players that included former Bayern Munich striker Dale Jennings; taking them to the 90th Can of Pop £1.00 minute could be a better performance than we initially thought, as they have since knocked out higher Water £0.90 league Brighouse Town too. The FA Vase win up in Durham on Friday was a very professional and disciplined performance which showed the value of what we worked on in pre-season. We will endeavour to take that performance into tonight’s game as we search for that ever elusive consistency! Runcorn was a tough game and I don’t believe we will play many better sides this season. We worked improvements really hard off the ball and on another day could have come away with the win. If Asa’s chance didn’t come back off the post we go into half time 2-0 and it’s a different game but credit where credit is due E: they were a good side and I don’t believe anyone would have said the result was unjust. However, given all the hard work we put it, it was a sucker punch to concede in the last minute. Dennyfield Diary nd Tuesday 22 September 2020

Tonight, our opening league game of the season is against local rivals Albion Sports. It will be the first competitive game played in the newly named Thank You Key Workers Stadium at Dennyfied. The Lions have had a mixed start to this campaign after undergoing some major off- field changes during the prolonged close season. Long serving Chairman Jaj Singh has stepped down and a new Manger, Pav Singh, has taken over following the departure of John Francis, which seems to have heralded a few new faces in the squad. One of which is Radio Leeds presenter Sanchez Payne. The squad also contains a couple of other ex Thackley players, the ever young Mark Bower and Charlie Flaherty. Albion have exited both the National competitions, beating Campion in the opening round of the FA Cup, they lost out to Runcorn Linnets in the next round. On Saturday, their trip up the A1 to Crook Town resulted a narrow one nil defeat. Thackley and Albion met each other twice in the last truncated season, Thackley winning both encounters, 4-0 at Dennyfield and 3-2 at Throstle Nest. Albion, were having a difficult season and were second bottom of the league when a halt to matches was called in March. Most of Manager Pat McGuire’s squad have returned again this season, a couple have

moved on and two or three new faces have been added. Thackley did not have the best pre-season, results wise, playing a number of teams from higher level. An eighty-ninth minute goal prevented them from taking the game to penalties at Runcorn Town in the FREE VALUATIONS opening round of the FA Cup. However, on Friday night they produced an excellent team performance to win through to the next round of the FA Vase (home to Harrogate Railway on 10th October) at Durham Town. Early season form is always very unpredictable but I am pretty sure we are in for an entertaining game on tonight. Many of our pre-season friendlies, including Ladies’ matches have taken place at the Thank You Key Workers Stadium at Dennyfield. The playing surface has stood up well to this more than usual wear and tear. This has been possible because of the hard work and care taken by our volunteers who have worked tirelessly throughout the Summer to make the surface the best it can be. There are too many such volunteers to mention them all here but their work over the Summer months has been invaluable and is much

appreciated by all.

NCEL Premier Division – Saturday 11th January 2020 - Kick off 3.00pm. Thackley continue the new decade unbeaten and close the gap on the leading pack as they beat local neighbours Albion in another ‘Bradford Derby’. I could be tempting fate to suggest that Thackley are beginning to achieve some measure of consistency that has not always been evident in some games this season. There could be several reasons for this: The return of a target player, the dynamism of the midfield or the reinstatement of solidity in the defence. Yesterday’s victory contained a lot of positives for the home team. It was the first time since the end of September that their number of victories exceeded the defeats, it was the first time since very early in the season that the number of goals scored exceeded the number conceded and it was the first time that we have achieved back to back ‘clean sheets’. Thackley had to make enforced changes to the team that secured an impressive victory last week at Goole. Jack Boyle and Ray Sibanda have moved to different clubs, one to play at a higher standard the other to gain more game time. Basi returned to the defence in place of Hargreaves and Asa Mitchell came into the front line. The bench had an impressive look to it with Muller returning and Matthews available for the second time since his serious injury in August. Conditions were not ideal; the weather was comparatively mild but there was a strong wind that threatened to make control difficult. Thackley had the early domination and the first chance fell to Normanton with one of his typical bursts beyond a defender but on this occasion, Nebard managed to get a toe in and deflect the forward’s shot for a corner. Thackley took the lead after twelve minutes. A free kick on the edge of the box was expertly delivered into the top corner by the returning Broadbent with a shot that was as powerful as it was accurate. Thackley were looking dangerous from corners and throw ins especially to the near post where Basi was proving a nuisance to the visitor’s defence. The Albion forwards were restricted to rare attacks but slick passing meant that they had to be carefully marshalled. In one foray forward a neat move between Aldrich and Chigumira left the latter inside the box with a clear sight of goal but Wilson snuffed out the danger. Thackley continued to press and Mitchell was unlucky to see his shot hit the bar. Half time arrived with Thackley in the ascendency but with no further goals to show for it. Half Time: Thackley1 Albion Sports 0. Thackley began the second half where they had left off in the first. Mitchell spurned a chance created for himself and Broadbent headed straight at White from just a few yards out. Albion had a great chance to equalise with a free header that went over the bar. Two minutes later Thackley’s lead was increased when Normanton put a free kick on to the head of Rothel inside the six-yard box for a header he couldn’t miss. Muller replaced Mitchell in a straight swap and began to use his industry to make inroads into the Albion defence. Albion were fighting to regain a foothold in the game and a ball into the inside left channel caused consternation as Chigumira advanced on Wilson who came out of his box to save. Nebard was incensed that a hand ball had not been awarded. His protestations to the referee earned him a spell in the sin bin which did the cause of his team no help at all. Thackley’s midfield was dominating affairs and Poole who had a very impressive afternoon nearly crowned his performance with a powerful shot that was just wide of the right-hand post. Faulding worked his way into the box but White was able to smother his shot. At this stage it was mostly Thackley, they replaced Broadbent with Murphy who, like Muller began to torment the Albion defence. Thackley’s final change came after eighty-one minutes when the excellent Ibrahimi was replaced by the hard-working Hall. Murphy proved his worth as goal scorer when he wriggled his way into the box and evaded two challenges to plant the ball into the bottom corner. In time added on Hall won the ball on the right and released Normanton whose pinpoint cross was glided into the net by Murphy for a quick-fire second and Thackley’s fourth. The Citizens, having no home base, were ground sharing with Willington, and since their (2) Goals Goals hosts had a home game on the ground on Saturday, the clash with Thackley was played on Friday Ryan Basi 0 1 1 Defender night. Thackley had not had the best pre season, results wise, and they had just failed to take their first Dan Broadbent Forward competitive game in the FA Cup’s opening round to penalties, conceding an eighty ninth minute goal, Joe Brown Forward/Midfield they would be wanting to get a result from this game. They were on Ben Grech-Brooksbank 2 0 2 Midfield/Forward the front foot from the opening whistle, winning a corner in the first minute and both Jack Normanton Kieran Haigh 1 1 2 Midfield/Defender and Lewis Waddington firing wide early on. Twice in quick succession Quentin Van Veenendaal Kristian Hargreaves 2 0 2 Defender committed cynical fouls just outside the box, only to be verbally reprimanded by the referee, when Lawrance Hunter 2 0 2 Defender 1 perhaps a yellow card may have been more appropriate. As the half progressed and being

give the team fresh legs. James Rothel had a great chance to increase Thackley’s lead but his far post header sailed over the bar. Ray Sibanda replaced the hard working Waddington, the away side were still looking for more goals. The fourth came with ten minutes remaining, Normanton flicking the ball over the line after Scaroni’s shot had rebounded from the bar. Morgan Butcher came on for Scaroni moments later for his first competitive start. Luke Wilson came out to thwart D’Andre Wainwright in the dying minutes when the Durham forward got clear but at the finish, Thackley were good value for their four-goal victory. CONGRATULATIONS!

Friday’s FA Vase game against Durham City marked milestones in the Thackley team for two of our players, Kris Hargreaves and Alex Marsh.

Long serving defender Kris Hargreaves reached the memorable target of 250 appearances. We are proud to claim Kris as one of our own. He has played most of his football in the red of Thackley. Kris made his debut just over ten years ago to the day that he made his 250th appearance. This came on the 11th of September 2010 in a First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup away against Marske United. Kris must have been impressive because we won the match 3-1. Another quirk of fate is that Kris had to travel to the North East as he did on that first appearance. Over the years Kris has been an ultra reliable team member producing consistent performances which has meant that he has been a regular first team player through all the seasons that he has been at Thackley. All of us at Thackley would like to congratulate Kris in appreciation of the outstanding contribution that he has made to our successes over the last decade. Our picture shows Kris being congratulated by manager Pat McGuire before the start of our match against Durham City played at Willington.

Congratulations also go to Alex Marsh who made his fiftieth appearance against Durham City. Alex made his debut at the outset of the 2018-19 season against Eccleshill United. He began the game as substitute but replaced Jordan Hendrie in the 60th minute and proceeded by earning himself a yellow card. Alex, unfortunately missed much of last season with a bad injury and we are pleased to see this effective and valuable player back and in full flow again. Alex usually plays wide on the right hands side and proves to be very effective when he advances into the attacking half where crosses from open play and set pieces create all sorts of problems for the opposition. Continuing on the Kris Hargreaves theme he sits down and answers PARKINSON ON FOOTBALL ten questions for Thackley AFC REREREES ARE THE ‘UNLOVED ONES’ Whatever happens to improve the lot of the referee, nothing will change his place in Club stalwart and central defender Kris Hargreaves took some time out to answer ten society.
