ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE

Overview Access and excellence are the hallmarks of St. Petersburg College (SPC), which was founded in 1927 as St. Petersburg Junior College, 's first two-year institution of higher education. Today, the college stands as a multi-campus, four-year public institution with 10 learning sites throughout Pinellas County. SPC serves more than 64,000 students each year and was the first state college in Florida to offer bachelor’s degrees. William D. Law Jr. became St. Petersburg College’s sixth president in 2010.

Degrees and Programs St. Petersburg College offers the following academic programs:  Nearly two dozen bachelor’s degrees that meet local workforce demands in high-needs areas.  An Associate in Arts degree that emphasizes a liberal arts education and prepares you for a bachelor's degree at SPC or to transfer to a four-year college or university.  Career and technical education programs (Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science and Certificates) that lead to well-paying jobs in Pinellas County or furthering your career.

SPC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which means credits transfer to reputable institutions.

Community Partnerships  Our partnerships with Pinellas County Schools help high school students prepare for college and earn high school and college credit for college-level work.  Our alliance with more than a dozen colleges and universities through the University Partnership Center offers bachelor's and graduate degrees to local residents.  Joint-use libraries on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs and Seminole campuses highlight unique partnerships between SPC and the cities of St. Petersburg and Seminole.  The SPC Downtown Cultural Arts Center houses The American Stage Theater and shared box office for The Florida Orchestra and Palladium Theater.

Faculty Excellence SPC’s outstanding, diverse faculty and staff provide a climate for student success and an enduring commitment to excellence through:  Advanced technologies  Comprehensive libraries  Innovative teaching techniques  International education opportunities  Online learning

Equal Access/Equal Opportunity The Board of Trustees of St. Petersburg College affirms its equal opportunity policy in accordance with the provisions of the Florida Educational Equity Act and all other relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations. The college will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, religion, sex, age, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, or against any qualified individual with disabilities in its employment practices or in the admission and treatment of students. Recognizing that sexual harassment constitutes discrimination on the basis of sex and violates this Rule, the college will not tolerate such conduct. St. Petersburg College 4 Fact Book 2014-15

2013-14 – A Year of Achievement

 SPC celebrated the passage of a tuition equity bill that allows children of undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition. State Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, and Rep. Jeanette Nuñez, R-, sponsored the hotly debated bill, which had been introduced in various versions in the Legislature since 2003. Governor Rick Scott signed the bill into law on June 9, 2014.

 St. Petersburg College has been ranked in the Top 100 for enrollment of Hispanic student undergrads by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine in May 2014.

 This year, SPC will receive $2.5 million from the state to help fund its new Bay Pines STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Learning Center, a hands-on science learning complex adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway in Pinellas County. The center will provide undergraduate research opportunities for STEM students, professional development for faculty and teachers, and an engaging outlet for the community to participate in science.

 A new Innovation Lab has opened at the Seminole Campus. In this creative learning environment, students, staff and library card holders can use the latest technology tools, including a 3D printer, Cublets KT06 modular robots, and a computer dedicated to podcasting and audio experiments. The lab was made possible through a $3,500 college innovation grant.

 SPC is one of 39 colleges in the country chosen by the U.S. Department of Education to receive a Title III Strengthening Institutions Program grant.

The award of $2.2 million over five years will be used by SPC to expand and strengthen its services to students, especially those who are from low-income families, are first-generation college students or who — for a variety of reasons — are at risk of failing to complete a degree or certificate.

 St. Petersburg College again is at the forefront of workforce training innovation.

For the second year in a row, the college is part of two groups that will receive grants from the U.S. Department of Labor for innovative training programs in partnership with local employers. SPC is part of two of the awarded grants: one for logistics/supply chain management training and another for orthotics and prosthetics career education.

One grant for more than $11 million goes to a consortium led by Century College in Minnesota to expand the number of trained, certified health care workers with expertise in orthotics and prosthetics. SPC will receive more than $2 million as part of the consortium.

SPC will also receive $1.5 million as part of a consortium led by Broward College to develop credentialed training programs in supply chain management for entry level and middle-level employees. The total grant is for $24.5 million.

In 2012, the Department of Labor awarded a $15 million grant to a consortium headed by SPC that aims to allow community colleges and employers to work together to build a skilled workforce in STEM fields.

 Katelyn Pilsbury, an SPC graduate and full-time Autistic Spectrum Disorder kindergarten teacher at Plumb Elementary School in Clearwater, was named Florida’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Rookie Teacher of the Year by the Florida Council for Exceptional Children.

St. Petersburg College 5 Fact Book 2014-15

 The construction of the Douglas L. Jamerson Jr. Midtown Center, the 49,000-square-foot learning facility at St. Petersburg College, is underway at the corner of 22nd Street South and 13th Avenue South in St. Petersburg. The building is scheduled to open in mid-2015.

 The Student Government Association at the Seminole Campus allocated money for a new peer advising program. The program allows experienced and trained SPC students to help their peers learn about college resources and answer questions about registration issues, financial aid and more.

 For an eighth consecutive year, St. Petersburg Collegiate High School at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus has received an “A” rating from the state of Florida. It is ranked among the best high schools in the state and is No. 1 in Pinellas County. In addition, SPCHS received the Best High Schools, Bronze Award from U.S. News and World Report.

 SPC is recognized for its Veterans Services program as one of the Best for Vets Colleges by the Military Times and a Top Military-Friendly College by the Military Advanced Education Magazine.

 Nine SPC students were named to the 2014 All-Florida Academic Team. The All-Florida Academic Team recognizes outstanding students for academic achievement, leadership and service to the community. SPC’s team members are Nathan DeCorte, Caitlin Hardwick, Hector Hernandez, Tam Huynh, Cheri Kuenn, Timilehin Opapeju, Sorany Son, Tait Sorenson and Marcus Spanolios.

 The new name for the Nick M. Billiris Administration Building has been unveiled at the Tarpon Springs Campus. Billiris, the campus’ founding provost, served as the campus leader for almost 33 years.

 By April 21, SPC had disbursed more than $74.3 million in financial aid to students for the spring term. Financial aid money comes from federal, state and college sources. Michael J. Bennett, Associate Vice President for Financial Assistance Services, said 18,116 students shared the distribution for an average award of $4,102.
