The Big Picture Georgia Breaks Barrier The Sylvia and Allan Potts memorial athletic meeting in Hastings was the scene of yet another outstanding milestone from the one and only Georgia Hulls. In winning the 100m, she achieved her pre-season goal of going under 12s for the 100m for the first time. Her time of 11.97 was the fastest in NZ at the time for all women, though this has been bettered since. She spreadeagled a very good field with her time qualifying her for the Junior World championships in Columbia in July. Strangely, it was thought that the pet distance, the 200m would be the event she would qualify in, but she surprised all by eclipsing the 100m time. From Hastings, she went to Wellington and competed in the Capital Classic meeting, where she was beaten into third in the 100m but won the 200m in the senior woman’s races. Not bad for a 15 year old! Jenna Helps Stew Roos Jenna Tidswell represented New Zealand SS in the Trans-tasman test against Australia SS in Tasmania during early Janu- ary. The test pits the best secondary school orienteers from both countries against each other in two grades, the U16 (junior) and U18 (senior) in teams of 4. The individual event saw Jenna finish as the second best New Zea- lander, placing 3rd, and was part of the relay team that convincingly won their relay. New Zealand went on to win the Southern Cross trophy over their counterparts. The event coincided with the Oceania Champs in which Jenna’s best performance was in the middle distance, where she finished 4th. Dylan and Bianca Kirk also took part in the Oceania Champs. The North Island Games, hosted in Wellington this year, brought together 4600 from throughout New Zealand in ages ranging from 7 to 14. Georgia also made the final of both the 100m and 200m. As did Emily Young , who was running in the 13 year old grade. With such big fields, making the final is a feat in itself. Also taking part were the sons, Hadley and Cooper, of the JCA director, Craig McDougall . Hadley did very well, winning both the shot put and long jump in his 8 year old divisions as well as coming 3rd in the 100m, Swedish Coach Shows Way

It was something akin to Steve Hanson coaching the school 1st XV, but the HNHS orienteers who benefitted from the coaching of Hakan Carlsson will remember it for a long time. Four days of listening to his expertise will hopefully come to fruition as the season goes on. Hakan is the Swedish elite team coach and while here was keeping an ear out to see how his team went in the Swedish Sports Awards after winning numerous world titles. They were awarded the 5th best sporting achievement from for 2014. Orienteering in Sweden is a very big sport, even going as far as having 17 orienteering high schools! What impressed the most was his manner of presenting his topics and how the juniors were totally absorbed in his teachings.
