Kakisa River Bridge Replacement Project km 169.8 (No. 1f

The Department of Transportation, Government of the has decided to upgrade the Kakisa River Bridge at km 169.8 on the Mackenzie Highway (No. 1) to improve the safety and capacity of the highway. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information about the proposed Kakisa Bridge Replacement Project, and to solicit any issues or concerns that your community may have with the proposed project.

The existing bridge will be replaced with a new bridge offset 12.3 m south of the existing bridge and the approaches will be upgraded within the existing corridor. Construction of the new bridge is currently scheduled to occur between March 18 th and October 10th , 2008. The old bridge will remain open during construction so that traffic can continue to use the Mackenzie Highway. The old bridge will be removed after the new bridge is commissioned.

Demolition of the existing bridge is proposed to take place between October 13', 2008 and January 30 th, 2009. In-stream activities are limited to the removal of the support columns for the old bridge and minimal impacts to aquatic resources are expected.

During construction and removal, the speed limit will be reduced within the construction zone and access may be reduced to a single lane resulting in temporary delays. After commissioning, the safety and capacity of the highway will be improved and navigation in the river below will be enhanced by the clear-span bridge design and lower superstructure profile.

Previous consultation has been undertaken in Kakisa. This community indicated that a recreational park on the north side of the bridge should not be disturbed. The proposed project will not disturb the park, and the leadership in Kakisa has expressed support for the project.
