Galatasaray SK’s stadium and match arrangements judged inadequate for UEFA matches

Precautionary stadium closure imposed by UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body

At its meeting on Tuesday 24 April 2001, the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body dealt with several disciplinary cases in relation to the most recent matches played in UEFA competitions.

Based on the official reports received following Galatasaray SK’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final match against Real Madird CF at stadium in on 3 April 2001, UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body has decided to impose a fine of 120,000 Swiss francs on the Turkish club for the improper conduct of the local supporters and the serious lack of organisation in and around the stadium.

It was also reported that insufficient protection was offered to the players and officials when accessing or leaving the pitch of play, as well as at the exit from the dressing room area. Furthermore, it was also ascertained that the stadium was considerably overcrowded and that even gangways and stairways were occupied by spectators. Given the potential risk of this situation, the club’s past record in this respect, as well as its responsibility in guaranteeing the security in its stadium, the Control and Disciplinary Body has decided to recommend to the UEFA Administration to ban the Ali Sami Yen stadium due to a serious lack of overall security. Furthermore, the body has also issued a directive, as a precautionary measure, whereby the Ali Sami Yen stadium shall not be used for UEFA club competition matches until it has been officially approved by the UEFA Administration.

Galatasaray SK can lodge an appeal against this decision by Saturday 28 April 2001 at midnight.
