POLICY OF THE GUIDE TO CHODOSH REGARDING THE USE OF THE INTERNET Several decades ago, when this issue first came up, we received a psak not to establish a Internet Web site for the Guide to Chodosh. We have honored this psak over the years. Recently, several Internet sites have emerged that republish Yoshon information which we have released to the public. We are not affiliated with any of these listings. We also do not take responsibilty for the accuracy and the timely updating of those lists. IMPORTANT CHANGE IN THE MALT SITUATION

For an overview of the malt problem, please see Section 10.1 below. Here we deal with the changes this year.

Over the past several decades the Guide to Chodosh has stated that barley malt is Yoshon up to at least the manufacturing or packing date of December 15. This was based on information gathered from many malt producers and is still the practice at many. Now at least one major producer of malt informed us that they will start using Chodosh barley to produce their malt by October 15! Even though there are other malt manufacturers who start Chodosh later, we have no access to proprietary information to ascertain which product gets the malt from which manufacturer. Therefore, we continue the Guide policy or recommending that consumers be machmir to be sure that they avoid using Chodosh. Therefore, please note that the CHODOSH PACKING DATE RECOMMENDED BY THE GUIDE TO CHODOSH FOR MALT HAS CHANGED FROM DECEMBER 15 TO OCTOBER 15. This affects cereals and other items using malt. It also affects beer from barley malt (most beers are from barley malt.) Also see Section 10.1 why baking flour containing malt may be different.

We had also recommended that packaged items that contain malt for which dating codes are not known, probably contain Yoshon malt if purchased up January 15 for beer and to March 15 for other products. That estimated safe purchase date now must also be MOVED UP TO November 15 for beer and January 15 for other items.

The Guide has also listed those mashgichim who give hashgocho for Yoshon who are lenient and not check for the status of malt in the products under their hashgocho. This leniency was at least partially based on the late date that the possibly Chodosh malt enters the production. Now this Chodosh date is moved back to be 2 months earlier. Since we became aware of this new development just before the Guide was set to go to the printer, we did not have a chance to consult these mashgichim to learn if their policy will change regarding malt. They could make sure that items packed after Oct 15 use old, stored malt. They could also require that the malt be purchased from the many malt manufacturers that still switch to Chodosh much later in the season than Oct 15. Or, they may find reasons to continue to be lenient. We hope to have answers from these mashgichim in time to include them in the next issue of the Guide, due in the November-December time frame. (Note that the Guide’s policy has always been to follow the advice of Harav Hagoan Moshe Feinstein ZT”L, who advised us before we began the Guide project not to pasken halachic matters. In this matter of the malt, the mashgichim should consult their own halachic authorities.)

Over the years we had established certain general principles that one can rely upon regarding Chodosh. For example, we had been told that the method of manufacture of baking yeast in the US does not pose any Chodosh problems. However, these general rules may not apply to items made in other countries such as China or Mexico.

WHEAT STARCH Wheat starch is used in many cereals, some cookies and other products. In the past we assumed that wheat starch can be made from spring wheat as well as winter wheat. Therefore, we advised that one should be machmir and assume that starting with a packing date shortly
