SBJRTSFOTO"' IE,IIS FlNISHES EIGHTH; WINS NATIONALTITLE by John Allen Niagara Falls, ,July 14- -With the Australian and Canadian nationzl tea.ms !'lere in force and U .s. Olyr.ipians not competing, there was a distinct _foreign flavor among the leaders in the National 10 Km Race Walking Championship today . As a matter of fact, national titlist Tim lewis was preceded across the line by five Au:~sies and tlli'.o.Ca.nadians. leading all the way and winning easily was Australia s Savid ::smith, His 40 :,56 effort left Guillaume I.eblanc nearly a minute behind at the finish. \, The women's race was also a victory for foreign power as Ann :Feel left Teresa Vaill well back with a 49:36 effort. Even the Master's race went to Aussie Willi Sa.wall, who was sixth overall in 4J:36. After covering the first 2,5 km lap in a blistering 9:43 , Smith was already 20 seconds up on Leblanc and he continued to lengthen that lead the rest of the way, although steadily slowing. Following some impressive races in Europe, the AUstralian has stamped himself as a aefinite medal coute~der in the Olympic 20. Leblanc was a solid second all the way, rut could never match the Aussie ' s :i:ece. I.a.pointe had to come from behind Simon Baker and Michael Harvey on the final lap to secure third place, following a race long dual a~ong the three. In the U.S. portion of the race, Lewis established a solid lead on Pete Timmons over the first lap , where he aas in sixth place, and then made it stick the rest of the way. Likewise, Timmons was able to get away from Mel McGinnis and Dave Cumings early and was never seriously challeng?d for secona. In the Men's Junior race, David McGovern was a clear winner L'll an excell ent 48:19, with Andrew McNicoll of Canada second. Jack Boitano was the first U.S. master and Jeanne Bocci won the women's masters race. The Junior woi:ten's race went to Canadian Louise Aubin . Monica Graesser was the first American. Smith, 28 , who has a lifetime best of JB:04 : in ~runark ill APril, said: "This is a tough course because of the long hill. And 'this heat (it was 81F at the start and 89 by the finish) adds about a minute or a minute and. half to your time. You can't maintain your rr.ythm. But it was important to get his one. Forty minutes for the 10 km is a good speed workout without daing any damage." Smith attends-the Australian Institute of Sport, an athletic training cen ter in Canberra. He has a lifetime best of l :20 :51 for 20 Km and has done 1 :21 :17 this year, losing to East Germany's ROnald Weigel, after lea.ding by over a mi nute at the 15 Km mark. He was DQ' d in the 1980 Oly:npics. Ann Tuel who ranked 8th in the World at 5 Km and 10th at 10 Km in 1982 (ORWRankings~ is a researcher for a law firm in Toronto and will begin law a.chool at the Univ ersity of Toronto in the fall. "I Like this course," she said. "L like the hill. I• m strong on hills . This is a faster 10 Km coursa than a lot of others. When you come down the hill you can see the turn. YoU never get the feelL'1g you're out in the middle of nowhere." See page 4 for results.
