Biographical/Administrative History James Edward Quigley was born in , , Canada on October 15, 1854. He was educated at St. Joseph's College in Buffalo, ; Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Niagara, New York; in Austria; and the Urban College of Propaganda in , where he received his doctorate in Sacred Theology. He was ordained in Rome on April 13, 1879.

Quigley was engaged in pastoral work in the Buffalo diocese, serving as assistant at St. Vincent's Church in Attica and later as Rector of St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo. On February 24, 1897, he was consecrated the Bishop of Buffalo.

Five years later, Pope Leo XII selected him as the second Archbishop of Chicago, and he was formally installed on March 10, 1902 at Holy Name Cathedral.

The Archbishop was a great builder and, although his administration lasted only 13 years, he founded 75 new parishes. He has a great interest in Italian immigrants and twenty of the new churches were for this group. Quigley insisted that provisions be made for a parochial school wherever a new church was planned.

In 1905, to encourage local vocations, he established the Cathedral College. This became the start of the seminary system developed by Cardinal Mundelein.

Archbishop Quigley died on July 15, 1915, and was buried in the Bishops' Mausoleum in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Provenance The material in this collection was transferred from the Cardinal's Residence on June 19, 1982.
