Both Incan and Spanish influences can be seen in the villages and religious festivities, which attract visitors throughout the year. You will witness the spectacular Atacama Desert, Toconao village, see rare flamingos on the Atacama Salt Flats, you will also visit the Tatio Geisers, 4300 metres above sea level where you will learn about the geography and have a spectacular viewpoint. Chile, Patagonia • Tierra Atacama is the first hotel in South America to produce solar powered electricity reducing their carbon foot print by 320-350 tons of CO2 every year • 100% of Tierra's water comes from their very own well and then treated via reverse osmosis for safe drinking • Grey water is used for irrigation, reviving arid land into a garden boasting an array of native species, such vegetation has not seen on this patch for over 30 years • Tierra Atacama works on an apprentice program with a local technical school where community members are further educated and many have gone on to gain employment at the hotel.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Welcome to Atacama Desert

On arrival in Calama you will be met and transferred to San Pedro de Atacama (1½ hours, shared with other hotel guests). A welcome dinner will be served at the hotel. During the evening, the guides will suggest optional activities available the following days.

DAY 1: Atacama

The small oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama lies on an arid high plateau in the Mountains in the heart of some of northern Chile’s most spectacular scenery. Overlooking the Volcano, its dramatic surrounding landscape ranges from desert, salt flats, steaming geysers and hot springs to fascinating rock formations. The church, dating back to 1774 and featuring adobe, cactus wood and leather-bound beams and the Archaeological Museum are both worth a visit.

CLTS4DAA DAY 2: Days 2 & 3: Activities in San Pedro de DURATION Atacama

4 Days Tierra Atacama have a set of activities where you can choose from onsite, allowing you to create your own personalised experience deep in the LOCATIONS Atacama. Below are suggested options you may like to choose from through-out your stay. Feel the Chile, Patagonia exhilaration of pedalling through spellbinding landscapes towards the Quebrada del Diablo ‘Devil’s Canyon’, witnessing scenic sights across the Atacama as you go. Having geared up and prepared your bicycles at the hotel, you will start your exploration of the local area, beginning with a ride along the banks of the San Pedro River, at 2,400m (7,900ft) above sea level. Bumble along the dusty pathways, with the beautiful mountains accompanying you along the way, before crossing the cool, gentle waters of the river to reach the other side. The Atacama Desert is known to be one of the best places on earth for stargazing. So, armed with the largest public telescope in the region as well as the help of our expert guides, we’ll enjoy a fascinating evening of astronomy together, something not easily forgotten. Look up to the jet-black canopy above you, studded with glittering stars and their constellations, easily visible to the naked eye thanks to the Atacama’s lack of artificial light and endless expanse of untouched desert. The night sky transforms throughout the year, so depending on the time of your visit, it may be Saturn’s rings, craters on the moon, nebulas and even supernovas on show.

DAY 4: Atacama: Departure day

After breakfast, you are transferred to Calama Airport for your flight to Santiago.

We use local guides and office staff to both maximise local employment opportunities and minimise carbon footprint. Local guides also ensure you benefit from the intimate knowledge, passion and culture of the country you’re visiting. Our guides are all highly qualified (most with university degrees) or equip with many years of experience and are paid above the standard wage. Whether it be our knowledgeable local guides, locally produced meals or the transport on tour, we do not use imported goods when local products are available. Tierra Atacama is the first hotel in South America to product solar-powered electricity. DURATION This hybrid system meets the hotel's daily energy demand which avoids burning more than 110,000 litres of diesel annually, reducing the carbon footprint by 320-350 tonnes of 4 Days CO2 every year. 100% of the water at Tierra Atacma is extracted from Tierra's own well, avoiding tapping into the townspeople's supply. Tierra has also supported an LOCATIONS archaelogical study on the property where more than 400 pieces of pre-Hispanic material have been found and donated to the Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum in San Chile, Patagonia Pedro de Atacama. Tierra Atacams also takes part in a dual education system at Likan Antai, a technical school where more than 40 apprentices under guidance of experts in teh fields of tourism, have gained experience in electricity and agriculture programs, appointing graduates to continue working with Tierra.

While visiting the many national parks, heritage sites, museums and landmarks our travellers are encouraged to explore remain culturally aware and sensitive. We further encourage you to buy appropriate souvenirs and discourage the buying of anything wrongfully made or taken from the environment i.e. shells and endangered species products. Information on how you can be environmentally conscious, and travel responsibly will be made available in our Travellers Guides and provided during your travels by guides and staff.
