Hull History Centre: Letters to Frank Noble Wood U DX45 Letters to Frank Noble Wood 1913-1945 Biographical Background: Frank Noble Wood was a poet and member of the Hull Literary Club for fifty years, acting as President between 1918 and 1931. He published two books of verse: Songs and Strife: A Selection of poems written during the Great War (1917) and Lines written on a visit to Wilberforce House, Hull and other verses (1912). He died on 11 November 1962, aged 84. Edmund Charles Blunden, born on 1 November 1896, was an English poet, author and critic. Blunden was educated at Queen's College, Oxford and entered the army as a second lieutenant of the Royal Sussex Regiment in August 1915. He saw action in Ypres and the Somme and was awarded the Military Cross. Blunden wrote about his experiences during the First World War in both his poetry and his prose. In 1919, he left the army and began studying at Oxford until he left in 1920 to pursue a literary career. His first book of poems was published in 1920 to be followed by many other books. In 1920 he also helped edit the poems of John Clare, mostly from Clare's manuscripts. Blunden was a prolific writer and he published numerous works between 1914 and 1967. Initially unable to support himself as a full-time writer, in 1924 he accepted the post of Professor of English at the University of Tokyo. In 1931, he became a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford and in 1944 became assistant editor of The Times Literary Supplement. -

Nearly all of Blunden’s poetry, fiction, and nonfiction is represented in the Works series. Among the most extensive correspondences are those of fellow poet Siegfried Sassoon, publisher Rupert Hart-Davis, second wife Sylva Norman, and literary agent A. D. Peters. Four indexes (for Works, Letters, Recipients, and Miscellaneous) follow the Container List and provide more detailed access to the contents of these papers. There is also a collection of books published by Fighting Cock Press, and of issues of Pennine Platform, the journal of Pennine Poets. Fighting Cock Press came into being in 1996 when Mabel Ferrett and Pauline Kirk began to collaborate in publishing high-quality literary works, and provides an outlet for the poetry and artwork of Pennine Poets as well as poetry and short stories by other Northern writers. Grants from the the National Lottery and Arts Council have enabled the Press to publish anthologies of poetry, prose and artwork, and to advise and support more than a hundred writers. Pennine Poets is a group of published writers who meet for regular creative writing workshops, stage readings and festivals. The group was founded at Elland Library in 1966, and was based for many years at the home of Mabel Ferrett in Heckmondwike. Sidney Keyes: the War-Poet Who 'Groped for Death'
PINAKI ROY Sidney Keyes: The War-Poet Who ‘Groped For Death’ f the Second World War (1939-45) was marked by the unforeseen annihilation of human beings—with approximately 60 million military and civilian deaths (Mercatante 3)—the second global belligerence was also marked by an Iunforeseen scarcity in literary commemoration of the all-destructive belligerence. Unlike the First World War (1914-18) memories of which were recorded mellifluously by numerous efficient poets from both the sides of the Triple Entente and Central Powers, the period of the Second World War witnessed so limited a publication of war-writing in its early stages that the Anglo-Irish litterateur Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-72), then working as a publications-editor at the English Ministry of Information, was galvanised into publishing “Where are the War Poets?” in Penguin New Writing of February 1941, exasperatedly writing: ‘They who in folly or mere greed / Enslaved religion, markets, laws, / Borrow our language now and bid / Us to speak up in freedom’s cause. / It is the logic of our times, / No subject for immortal verse—/ That we who lived by honest dreams / Defend the bad against the worse’. Significantly, while millions of Europeans and Americans enthusiastically enlisted themselves to serve in the Great War and its leaders were principally motivated by the ideas of patriotism, courage, and ancient chivalric codes of conduct, the 1939-45 combat occurred amidst the selfishness of politicians, confusing international politics, and, as William Shirer notes, by unsubstantiated feelings of defeatism among world powers like England and France, who could have deterred the offensive Nazis at the very onset of hostilities (795-813). -

Paul Fussell, in his The Great War and Modern Memory (1975), dwells extensively on the perhaps unrivaled role of literature in this “war that will end war” (H.G. Wells). The British soldier, whether the officer out of Sandhurst or Cambridge, or the common soldier from the laboring classes, brought to the trenches of France and Belgium a literary background born of the liberal belief in the powers of education both in the classics and in the canon of English literature. -

Ezekiel Black Mouthlessness and Ineffability in World War I Poetry and The Waste Land n “Teaching World War I Poetry—Comparatively,” Margot Norris connects Charles Sorley’s poem “When you see millions of the mouthless dead” to an uncanny phenomenon in World War I poetry: “Sorley’s poem is one of a Inumber of poems that invoke the figure of mouthlessness, or the broken mouth or broken teeth, as a trope for the difficulty or inability of soldiers to articulate their experiences” (144-5). Amid the first industrial war, whose novel horrors include tanks, airplanes, machine guns, and poison gas, soldiers could not color their traditional lexicon, a vocabulary born of Victorian ideals, to paint this war’s grim visage, and this insight is familiar to World War I poetry criticism; in fact, Paul Fussell, author of the seminal book The Great War and Modern Memory, writes, “One of the cruxes of the war, of course, is the collision between events and the language available—or thought appropriate—to describe them. To put it more accurately, the collision was one between events and the public language used for over a century to celebrate the idea of progress” (169). This phenomenon might seem specific to war poets, but the inability to express the atrocity of the Great War is widespread—despite writers, especially T. S. Eliot, distancing themselves from the World War I poetry tradition. Although T.S. Eliot, like other Modernist poets, does not recognize the work of certain World War I writers as poetry, The Waste Land suffers from the same affliction as the war poets: neither Eliot nor the war poets could voice their reaction to the Great War; more specifically,The Waste Land and trench poetry struggle with the ineffability of the age through fragmentary language and images of broken mouths. -

Published on Great Writers Inspire (http://writersinspire.org) Home > Isaac Rosenberg - biography Isaac Rosenberg - biography Isaac Rosenberg (1890-1918) was born in Bristol on 25th November 1890, the son of Barnett and Anna Rosenberg, Lithuanian Jews who had emigrated to Britain a few years before. In 1897, in search of better- paid work, the family moved to the East End of London, but their financial difficulties continued. After a brief period at St Paul's School, St George's-in-the-East, Isaac was sent to the Baker Street Board School. Here he exhibited a talent for drawing and writing which his sympathetic headmaster encouraged. He also discovered English poetry, which he read with huge excitement. By 1904 his family could no longer afford to keep him at school and he was apprenticed to the firm of engravers, Carl Hentschel, in Fleet Street. His earliest known poem dates from 1905. He disliked what he saw as soul-destroying work, and in 1907 began to attend evening classes in painting and drawing at Birkbeck College. In 1911 he was dismissed suddenly from Hentschel's, but a chance encounter in the National Gallery led to an introduction to a group of wealthy Jewish women. One of these, Mrs Herbert Cohen, offered to support him at art school, and in the autumn of that year he enrolled at the Slade. Among his contemporaries were many of the leading young painters of his day, including Mark Gertler, David Bomberg and Stanley Spencer. 1912 saw the publication of his first slight volume of poems, Night and Day, and in the following year he was introduced to Edward Marsh, the influential patron and editor of the Georgian Poetry series.
