PRONGHORN SPORTS MAGAZINE President's Message

Iur athletics and recreation programs are an integral part of the student experience at 0;the University of Lethbridge. Our student athletes are given the opportunity to strive for excellence in both their academic and athletic pursuits. They are helped in their endeavours by skilled coaches and supportive classmates who participate as team managers, trainers, event coordinators, and minor officials. Through dedication to their specialty, these students provide Pronghorn fans with high-calibre sporting events. Without these fans, we wouldn't have sport. Our students, faculty and staff, and community friends who come to events are as important to U of L athletics as the athletes them selves. Although last year was a painful one administratively for Pronghorn Athletics, our fans had a great deal to cheer about. In March, our Pronghorn Hockey team took Maple Leaf Gardens by storm £9K- and captured the CIAU championship. Congratulations are also due to swimmer Dean Kondziolka, who won the CIAU gold medal in the 50-metre freestyle. Pronghorn athletes captured more national and divisional awards last year than ever before in the ftft history of the program. Equally as important were the perhaps unrecognized personal bests, quality performances, and total team efforts that gave our athletes and fans reason to be proud. This year will provide our fans with more excitement. The year will also be one of challenges for Athletics staff, coaches, and administrators, who are faced with delivering a high-quality program within our current fiscal constraints. I am confident that these challenges will be met and that our Pronghorn student-athletes, in their continuing pursuit of excellence, will provide fans with another outstanding year of competition.

n behalf of all Pronghorn athletes and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to another exciting year of Pronghorn Athletics. We appreciate your support of university Osport, and we will endeavour to continue providing exciting and entertaining games and outstanding individual performances. As active members of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) and Canada West Universities Athletics Association (CWUAA) we are part of a group committed to developing stu dents both through academics and athletics. University sport in Canada offers some of the finest amateur sport anywhere. The 1993-94 season was an exciting one for Pronghorn Athletics. It will be hard to forget the excitement the Hockey Horns created on their way to capturing the National Championship. In addition to hockey gold, two swimmers and one track and field athlete medalled at ClAU's, and 7 judokans went on to represent the University of Lethbridge at the Canadian Championships. 28 Pronghorn student athletes merit special recognition for earning Academic All-Canadian Awards, given to athletes who achieve academic first-class standing. This season brings us new challenges and great opportunities for excitement. You can look forward to: live entertainment during breaks at games; great looking apparel available for pur chase; great giveaways including cars and trips; increased opportunities to meet our athletes at events in the community; and much more. We are working hard and anticipating a great year. Join us as we rise to the challenges of the 1994-95 season. Come and share the excitement! Make it a Habit!!

s Mayor of Lethbridge, it is my pleasure to send every best wishes to the University of A Lethbridge Pronghorns as they begin another academic and sporting year. Our citizens are proud of the recreation facilities that have been developed at the University of Lethbridge. It is becoming more and more accepted that an active lifestyle leads to life-long health and mental achievement, and sport is also an excellent way to develop the values of ded ication, determination and teamwork. Of course, the camaraderie that can be seen between the members of the Pronghorns is an important component of participating in these team sports. Pronghorn Athletics provides quality entertainment to both guests and residents. The pro gram is an important economic generator as Pronghorn home games bring visiting teams and their supporting network of friends and family to our city. To those visiting Lethbridge to face the Pronghorns, I extend a personal invitation to you to enjoy all the amenities our city offers. I would like to send a good luck to each and every com petitor, along with a wish for a safe trip home.

dopt-A-Horn is a program which allows you to take a direct and signifi cant role in assisting a deserving student-athlete to continue his/her participation in varsity athletics. Donations will provide necessary additional equipment, and assist with travel costs and university expenses. For $300.00 a business or individual can participate in the program by filing out a Adopt-A-Horn pledge sheet. Each par ticipant shall receive a tax receipt for their participation in the program. For further information call the Athletics office at 329-2705.
