The majestic Chinese Lion Dance

Farm frolics HE ith annual Burwood Village Fest certainly proved to be quite the local a-fair – and a huge Tsuccess. he entire Village was a burst of colour with balloons, elaborately dressed roving performers, yarn-bombed trees and beautiful blue skies – the perfect setting for the Burwood Traders to say “hank you” to the community for supporting local shopping. Our traders love festival day, with many going the extra yard to showcase what they do best. Of course, festival classics such as the animal farm, face painting, henna tattoos and cake stall were an absolute hit for the whole family. he new addition of the smoothie bikes had families lining up to create their very own delicious drink, pedalling hard for their refreshingly yummy smoothie. here was an evident cultural appreciation element this year, with Latin ballroom dancers encouraging attendees to have some fun and join in. And a majestic Chinese Lion Dance, accompanied by traditional Chinese drummers, had the audience in complete awe of the performers. In addition, a vast range of food options included free pizza, gelato, pan wraps, the ever-popular sausage sizzle, satay sticks and delicious doughnuts. Finally, a very important thank-you to our sponsors, the City of Boroondara, RAMS Inner East and the Burwood Village Traders Association. We look forward to doing it all again next year. June – August 2015 BURWOOD BULLETIN 5 he Argus, Friday, 9 December 1955 Burwood is Moving East By Harry Perrott, he Argus property writer. During the hectic years of the 1890 land boom, Burwood, like many other of the then outer areas, had much of its land subdivided by land speculators. For some years ater the collapse of “the boom” Burwood remained a sleepy country village served for transport by a one-carriage train which ran a shuttle service between Ashburton and Deepdene. But with the coming of the electric tram from the city the district was quickly recognised as a very attractive residential area, and new homes went up in hundreds. Today part of the old outer circle line, which was electriied some years ago, has been duplicated, and work is in progress at Camberwell to allow trains to run directly into the city. At some times of the day at present it is necessary to change trains at Camberwell. Warrigal rd., on the east side of Burwood, is the boundary between the municipalities of Camberwell and Mulgrave. It is on the Mulgrave side that new development will take place. In Mulgrave Shire the minimum area for a home site is 7,800 squares. Roadmaking costs from £4/1/0/- to £5 a foot. 22 Walk a mile in our shoes URWOOD resident Mel Grace recalls the early days – more than 65 years ago – of the family Bshoe business, and of the changes that took place not only in his business, but in the way shoes were made. he irm, T. M. Grace, was started by Mel's brother Trevor Milton Grace, who was the shoemaker in the family (their father Wal was a tanner). “[Our business] was a progressive thing,” Mel remembers. “We made very simple sandals for a long time. hey were simple leather – because there wasn’t anything else – sandals with just the soles together and trimmed around the edges with straps at the top. We made thousands of them; they were very popular for a few years. he family worked together; Mum used to pack the boxes. I was the stitcher of the sandals.” his is one of the changes Mel has seen overtake the shoe industry. Advances in rubber, plastics, synthetic cloth and industrial adhesives have allowed manufacturers to create shoes that stray considerably from traditional crating techniques. Whilst leather has remained standard in expensive dress shoes, athletic shoes oten have little of it or none. Soles, which were once laboriously hand- stitched on, are now more oten machine-stitched or simply glued. Later on, Mel's family bought a press to cut the soles out on – that was when they built the factory at 127 Highbury Road. Although T. M. Grace did not make shoes at irst, but cut soles for other people, when they did start to make proper shoes the machinery needed to stitch through the leather was very noisy, and quite apart from considering the neighbours (the business started out in the family garage), more room was needed to house two large presses. “Actually,” Mel recalls, “we were the irst factory in Highbury Road. We used to make kids’ shoes, the uppers of which were not stamped out; instead, we had 20-gauge galvanised-iron templates. he shoes were cut out to the shape by a person who was called the ‘clicker’. He would apply a template and cut the hide with a knife, reversing it to produce the opposite shoe.” he business lourished and more room was needed to accommodate the extra plant and employees; by 1951 the Highbury Road factory was extended, and then in 1952 moved again to larger premises at 68–70 Highbury Road. As with everything, life goes on and “progress” has its unforseen by-products. Mel points out how the shoe industry was afected. PICTURES “We sold lots of shoes – and then came television.
