Val Gardena. The holiday valley of the

EDITION 2012 Pascion Passion Dolomyths

The renowned researcher Friedrich Simony called the

Dolomites “a gigantic city covered in debris with numerous castles and towers“, whereas Reinhold

Messner defines them as “the world’s most beautiful mountains”.

Inspiration and time for dreaming in the realm of the

“pale mountains”: the Dolomites are unique in the world for their combination of a stunning landscape and an extraordinary rich cultural heritage. There are many legends and myths of witches, forest and fabulous creatures that populate this region, which is a UNESCO World Heritage natural site characterized by a varied fauna and flora. Around the Sella and the

Sassolungo Group spreads the impressive limestone massif that has developed millions of years ago out of a tropical sea, a unique formation that still enchants.

This natural paradise within one’s reach has always captured people’s hearts and is frequented by illustrious guests from the science, research and art sector as well as by hikers, cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts.

cinch 5 Nature’s beauty

The Puez-Odle Nature Park in the heart of the Dolomites, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage natural site, is like an “open book of geological Earth history” testifying to the existence of the tropical sea that once dominated the region.

In this protected area, nature lovers feel like in

paradise. Here you can find many rock types, sedimen-

tary depositions and alteration zones, you can admire

spruces, larches and Swiss pines as well as gorgeous

alpine roses by the wayside and now and then you can

observe also chamois, which live in the mountain pine

copse. In spring, anemones and snowbells, primroses

and crocuses sprout on the alpine meadows of Val

Gardena, while in summer you can enjoy the sight of

various species of Gentiana and Nigritella. Rare types

of orchids like the lady’s slippers and the Turk’s cap

lily will catch the eye of the most careful observers,

whereas animal lovers will be delighted by hearing the

calls of the ravens and the cheeky alpine choughs

nestling in the fissures of the Dolomites. And with

some luck, you will be able to admire majestic golden

eagles flying high above Vallunga.

La ferata de Gherdëina

The railway of Val Gardena was a 31 km long local

narrow-gauged railway, which was built during World

War I for military use. Parts of the train path still exist

today and can be discovered on a walk that stretches

through the whole valley starting in Ortisei and

ending in Plan near Selva Gardena.

6 sies The smell of Swiss pines, the lush green of the alpine pastures, the rugged cliffs: summer in Val Gardena is a natural spectacle.

set 7 Impressive rock formations in the heart of the most beautiful moun- tains of the world. A paradise for mountaineering enthusiasts and for those who are just curious.

8 ot Crëta Confidence

nuef 9 Both the locals and the guests answer the call of the moun- tains with enthusiasm: on two wheels, with poles, in climbing gear or by foot.

10 diesc Conquering the peaks

At the beginning of the 19th century, the first mountaineering enthusiasts decided to discover the mountains, thus founding what in the following century became the alpine guides group.

The alpinism in the Dolomites of Val Gardena looks back at a long tradition boasting many pioneers as for example the mountaineer Ferdinand Glück from Selva

Gardena, who in the 1930s was known as “King of the

Sella Towers”. But also the recent history of Val

Gardena has generated heroes of the mountains like the extreme climber Karl Unterkircher, who died in

2008 during an expedition on Nanga Parbat. He was born in Selva Gardena and was an alpine guide and member of the known Catores group as well as the president of the mountain rescue service Aiut Alpin

Dolomites. To this day, togetherness and solidarity are the virtues that characterise the mountaineers of

Val Gardena. In the valley, the Val Gardena Mountain

Guide Association and the Alpine School Catores organise personalized hiking and climbing excursions.

The Karl-Unterkircher-Award

The Karl-Unterkircher-Award is granted for great alpine climbing skills. The second edition of this event for all mountain lovers and all interested people will take place at the beginning of July 2012.

14 catordesc Mountain people

A hunting population evolved into a farming commu- nity with a unique language and the typical mentality of the inhabitants of this fantastic valley.

The came up through the romanisation of the Raeti, the ancient farming population living in

Val Gardena, who emerged from the hunting people populating this area already 8000 years ago. Until seventy years ago, the majority of the locals still plied its trade as mountain farmers working the alpine pastures and steep slopes around the Sella and the

Sassolungo Group. With time, this burdensome living has shaped the people of the valley: diligence and resourcefulness, togetherness and consciousness of tradition, but also the open-mindedness are until today characteristics of Val Gardena’s people.

A congenial mixture: still nowadays, the inhabitants of the valley are conscious of their roots and cherish traditional values.

Val Gardena folklore festival

On occasion of the traditional folklore festival taking place on the first Sunday in August, the guests can enjoy various concerts of Val Gardena’s bands and the famous parade in the traditional costumes accompanied by a delicious gastronomic offer. The festival is organised by the Tourism Associations together with various other associations of the three villages of the valley.

chindesc 15 Wood carving art

Handcraft with tradition: at the beginning of the 17th

century, the people of Val Gardena began to carve

wood. Nowadays, they are known all over the world for

their artwork.

Until today, the wood carving art of Val Gardena’s

artisans is known far beyond the boundaries of the

small Dolomite valley. This ancient tradition is still

being maintained and passed on from generation to

generation. The association UNIKA was founded by

various artists and artisans and its name stands for

the uniqueness of the art works and their creators.

The cultural centre of Ortisei hosts the newly designed

ART52 exhibition gallery, which provides interesting

insights into the arts of Val Gardena, demonstrating

the many stylistic changes that wood carving in the

area has undergone in its four-centuries-old evolution.

The wooden sculptures are marked by the Gardena Art

trademark of the same-named association of laborato-

ries specialized in wood carving that makes them

instantly recognisable as quality works of art.

The UNIKA sculpture fair

Every year in September, the popular UNIKA sculpture

fair in Val Gardena takes place. The permanent

exhibition Galaria UNIKA, however, is open all year:

it displays many original works of art and hosts also

wood carving demonstrations.

dejenuef 19 A multilingual world

Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romanic language, developed in the

isolation of Val Gardena out of Vulgar Latin and the

rests of the ancient local language.

The third official language of South is the

“trademark” of the ethnic minority that counts four

percent of the province’s population. The Ladin area of

South Tyrol begins at the entrance of Val Gardena in

Pontives. Ladin is also spoken in the neighbouring

territories Val Badia and Val di Fassa, in the area of

Cortina d’Ampezzo and in the Grisons (canton of

Switzerland). The people of Val Gardena are proud of

their traditions, cultivate their language and pass it

on to posterity. The maintenance of Ladin is also

conducted through the school education, various

publications as well as television and radio broad-

casts. Nowadays, the Ladin language is highly

threatened by the penetration of foreign elements,

but it is still alive and spoken by the majority of the

population.

Gherdëina, Gherdëina

appropriately with the following verse:

A clear and warm summer day in the alpine world of the Dolomites is an unforgettable experience: the

Nature Park Puez-Odle and the Nordic Active Park in the idyllic Vallunga are two unique attractions. The guests explore the places of interest of this area comprising for example monuments like the ruins of the Wolkenstein Castle, the native village of the famous minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein, or the

St. Sylvester’s Chapel in Vallunga. The home of the world-renowned mountaineer Luis Trenker, whose name is also borne by a promenade, boasts a lively atmosphere and is surrounded by an impressive nature. Classic tours in summer include the hikes to the symbols of the valley, the Sella and the

Sassolungo. The loop trail around the Sassolungo is also fantastic by bike. An excursion through the so-called Stone City, which has been immortalised by many popular tales and legends, is ideal for all nature and sports lovers.

32 trëntedoi A place for children

Already in the 17th century, the local inhabitants have started to demonstrate great attention to the children using their wood carving skills to create toys for them and telling the little ones the legends of the Dolomites.

The children can discover the locations of these old myths personally during outings with their parents, the alpine guides or the hosts of the various childcare facilities. On the traces of legendary figures, the trips lead to the Lech Sant, the “Holy Lake” on the Mastlé alpine pastures above S. Cristina, and to the rugged cliffs of the Sassolungo. At the climbing crag in

Vallunga and in the climbing gyms in the three villages of Val Gardena, the children can have fun and demonstrate their abilities under professional guidance; for the more adventurous ones there is a high ropes course and for the littlest ones there are many playgrounds in the child- and family-friendly villages of the valley. In winter, the Val Gardena

SuperKids offer includes discounts for little skiers, and in summer there are special prices for children during the Val Gardena Family Weeks.

main village Ortisei (1236 m) at the entrance of the

characterised by its farmhouses and the ancient
