Foundations of Faith Community Course Offered March 4 - May 10, 2019

A Parish/Faith Community Nurse (FCN) is a who facilitates whole-person health and intentional care of the spirit in the setting of a community of faith; thus reclaiming the healing ministry of that faith community. Thousands of FCNs serve in congregations across the US and to establish and support health ministry programs. The American Nurses Association has recognized faith as a specialty practice of professional nursing.

Course Overview: The Foundations of curriculum was developed by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center and the Church Health Center in 2014 from a Judeo-Christian perspective that is respectful of and applicable to other faith traditions. Students will learn about the history and philosophy of faith community nursing, health and healing from various faith traditions, and issues of life transitions, such as loss, suffering and violence. Professional ethics, documentation and tools to begin practice as a faith community nurse will be explored. The content includes introduction to the four major concepts of faith community nursing: the spiritual dimension, professionalism, wholistic health, and community and cultural diversity. Participants will apply the in a leadership role as a FCN.

Accreditation and Contact Hours: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 2722, for 40 contact hours. Students must complete all online course work and submit all assignments to receive the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing certificate of completion.

Course Objectives (participants will): 1. Examine the professional role of the FCN and define the essential attributes of FCN practice. 2. Relate the concepts of health, healing and wholeness from two different faith traditions to your own understanding of the concepts. 3. Create a short devotional to be presented to the class and instructor. 4. Identify the health needs of a community of faith and plan a health promotion program incorporating the concept of spirituality to meet those needs. 5. Formulate a written proposal for the implementation of a faith community nurse ministry. Participants can expect to dedicate approximately 5 hours per week.

She is a member of the Health Ministries Association Inc., and . Deborah serves as a Health Ministries Association Mentor, participated in the revision of the Scope and Standards of Faith Community Nursing, and has experience beginning health ministry programs in a variety of settings. She loves to share her enthusiasm and passion for faith community nursing with others.

Mary Lynne Knighten, DNP, RN, PN, NEA-BC Adjunct Faculty Azusa Pacific University Dr. Mary Lynne Knighten has over 35 years of experience in many areas of nursing, including being credentialed as a Parish Nurse. She is the Health Ministry Director at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Eagle Rock. She has taught in the FCN Foundations course for various organizations since 2000, and is a regular guest speaker on Health Ministry, FCN, and Spirituality at Cal State LA for 16 years. Dr. Knighten is a published author, educator, lecturer, and internationally recognized expert in palliative care, leadership, and patient-and family-centered care.
