NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Brotherhood

Brotherhood is a fabric with many binding threads running through it. The strongest of these threads is an intertwining of Past National Presidents. The DNA of this thread is comprised of tradition, ritual, protocol, impartial fairness and a strong sense of self-awareness – especially as it pertains to the image he projects to those he is attempting to influence. Just as the fabric of a quilt is selected to promote comfort, warmth and aesthetics, brotherhood was chosen as the fabric of our fraternity to promote fellowship, love, charity, community awareness, and general agreement on the important aspects of life such as God, Country, Family and Community.

As members of Phi Delta Kappa, we become aware of these qualities as we participate in the events of our chapter, run for chapter offices, and work together to improve our public image. We did not always possess this insight, but it grew within us through much participation. Every SEC Officer knows that it is not so much his personal leadership that is valued by the fraternity as it is his ability to follow in the path that has been forged by all those who preceded him. Tradition is nearly as important a building block of our fraternity as brotherhood.

Self-awareness is as essential to a Chapter Officer as it is to one in search of a job or profession. Such a man must be aware of the image he is projecting. This image is dependent upon his choice of clothes, the company he keeps, and the conduct he displays in public. Does your chapter reflect the image that you want the public to see? Does your community perceive your chapter of Phi Delta Kappa as a positive influence on it – one that has charity at heart, is civic-minded and supportive of community efforts? Or does it see you as an “Animal House” type of college fraternity that just wants to party, drink, and avoid responsibility at all costs? Do you project the image that you should be exemplifying as a member of Phi Delta Kappa? Is the man that others see in you the one that you want them to see?

Self-discipline is prescribed by all philosophies that promote the improvement of mankind. Self- awareness is also a positive trait so long as it does not become a casualty to false pride. A degree of pride is required of all men who reach for higher ground. It is the quality that lifts a man from a mundane life into one that is meaningful and a blessing to those he values. It usually means being charitable, non- judgmental, understanding, selfless, and quick to volunteer to help a brother.

We all have time for the things we love to do. Participation in Phi Delta Kappa will improve the quality of your life if you allow it to happen. Put a little joy in your life. Don’t be an outlier at your chapter house. Be a participant. Attend meetings, help keep the chapter house clean, run for a chapter office, participate in your chapter’s community out-reaches, be a supporter of the social functions and, above all, be a good brother. It’s the stuff we’re made of.
