An American Band By TibbieB Dear Readers, A summers ago, a group of S&H sibs and I met in the Great Smokey Mountains for a few days of watching episodes and sharing our obsession for the boys. While watching “The Specialist” late one night, we noticed Starsky was wearing a t-shirt with something printed on the front. Ever desperate for any minute detail about the private lives of our heroes, we pursued the clue with a fervor equal to Sherlock Holmes tracking down Dr. Moriarty. Thank God for that marvelous invention on the DVD player the zoom! JackieH, always up to a challenge, maneuvered and manipulated the device until the words emblazoned on the t-shirt miraculously flashed on the screen before our eyes: “We’re An American Band.” “I know what that is!” I shouted to the others. “Grand Funk Railroad! That’s one of Grand Funk’s biggest hits!” Who would have taken Starsky for a Grand Funk Railroad fan? He was a rocker a hard rocker, no less! Until that moment, we had had little insight into his taste in music (aside from disco music, Jim Croce, and a little “Black Bean Soup”). We knew Starsky played the guitar, but had been treated to only a smattering of his musical ability in “The Avenger.” Could it be true? Starsky liked hardcore rock-and-roll? We pontificated on this for hours and, on the following day, rushed into town in search of Grand Funk’s CD by the same title. It wasn’t easy, but we finally returned home from a hard day of shopping in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Londonmaid proudly clutching the trophy in her hand.

  • THE BIRTH of HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard Rock
THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.

  • Roots Report: Grand Funk Railroad at Twin River
Roots Report: Grand Funk Railroad at Twin River Okee dokee folks… I went to see Grand Funk Railroad and former Eagles member Don Felder at Twin River last Friday night. These are my thoughts on the show. First of all, we were a bit late for the show. All week I had been thinking, “How are they going to squeeze two acts into the short timeframe that they usually have allotted for concerts at Twin River?” Well, the answer to my thoughts was that the show started at 7pm and I had forgotten to even check. So we missed Don Felder’s first few songs. When we arrived, Don Felder was already halfway through “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” I have to admit that I did not have high expectations for Don Felder’s set. I was curious as to what he was going to do. I watched the three and one half hour History Of The Eagles documentary a few times and have almost committed it all to memory. What I garnered from it was that Felder was bounced from the Eagles, Don Henley and Glen Frey didn’t really have positive things to say about him and that basically his main contribution to the band was that he was just a lead guitarist. Felder didn’t really have a booming solo career so I thought that he would just play just a very short set. I was wrong. From what I was able to ascertain from the woman sitting next to me, Felder had already played about five songs before we arrived.

Issue 109 APRIL 20TH, 2020 This issue’s cover: Judy Garland (1922 – 1969). One of the most iconic actresses, recording artists and performers of all time. Though haunted by personal struggles, she attained greatness that few ever achieved. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue. Like everyone else, we at Copper have been impacted by the coronavirus, whether by disruption in our work and home lives to financial impact, stress, anxiety and writer’s block. And yes, one of us contracted the virus – thankfully, he’s doing OK. So, over the next few issues you might see some changes – temporary absence of some writers, a different balance of articles and other differences from the usual. We trust you’ll understand, and we look forward to when these pages, and our lives, reach a new equilibrium. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Stereophile deputy editor Art Dudley. He was one of the finest men ever to grace the audio industry. My tribute to him is in these pages. Also in this issue: Rich Isaacs begins a series on Italian progressive rock with a look at the great PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi). Ken Sander takes us on a wild rock and roll ride with Eric Burdon and War. Professor Larry Schenbeck continues his series on immersive sound. WL Woodward gets jazzed about bass. John Seetoo concludes his series on legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra/film composer/techno-pop pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. In a special report we ask audio companies how they’re responding to the COVID-19 crisis.

  • MARK FARNER Biography 5/15/15
MARK FARNER Biography 5/15/15 One of rock’s true legends, Mark Farner is back on the recording scene with a new EP, 432. The four-song disc revisits previous Farner classics with fresh productions that find the pioneering singer-songwriter/guitarist, who fronted the historic 1970s rock power trio Grand Funk Railroad, in vintage form—and with an addition to his immensely influential signature sound. The key is in the numerical EP title. In recording the four songs on 432, Farner deviated from the tuning standard for musical pitch that is designated as A440 to a different one, A432. “A440 is what tuning forks in the U.S. are tuned to,” Farner explains, trying not to sound too technical. “But different countries and regions in the world use different musical pitch standards. I’d heard about the A432 tuning, and when I tuned my Guild acoustic guitar to it, it was like a new toy! The sound seemed bigger—out louder, but there was more of it. So I got three acoustic guitars and a dobro and tuned them all to A432, and they all love it: The wood loves it! It’s the frequency of the universe, Brother! I tried out the new tuning while on tour last year and we ended up playing the entire tour [50 shows] in A432 and everyone was happy,” says Farner. “It just sounds better because your ear loves it. The only problem is that they don’t make harmonicas tuned in 432!” Inspired by the newly discovered tuning, Farner rerecorded what is now the 432 focus track “Take You Out,” which he wrote and then released as a digital single two years ago.
