Welcome to Knebworth Recreation Ground…

This afternoon we host our friends from Broadfields FC in our third Saturday home game of the season. Both teams are unbeaten going into today’s game so we expect a thorough examination today, as I am sure our visitors do.

Last season was the first time our paths crossed and both games were won by the home side (3-0 at Knebworth and 4-1 at Broadfields).

I’d like to welcome David Webster, his players, staff, officials and supporters from our visitors along with today’s referee; Peter Killen. We hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home.

As usual, today’s matchday programme contains details of forthcoming fixtures, our first look at a league table and the Non-League Paper column which this week focuses on quality 0-0 draws and notable goalscoring feats!!!.

Closer to home, we’re still looking for people to take on some small weekly or monthly tasks to share the burden; an hour a week or a few hours each month. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with Stuart.

We are also always looking for articles for the programme so if anyone has a burning desire to go into print let me know. Or a player who fancies getting their picture and profile in a future edition…………..

Please join us back at the after the game where food is generously laid on and live sports are shown on television – it’s just down the road and you’ll be warmly welcomed!

Enjoy the game!

John

Non-League Paper programme column by Joshua Peck

DON’T get me wrong, I enjoy a good 0-0 draw. Defences on top, star strikers in back pockets, keepers smiling with their clean sheets.

And there’s something beautiful about an organised 1-0 away win. You know the ones. Where a team shows zero ambition, plays one up front, defends superbly, frustrates the opposition by slowing the game down and then nicks a winner from their only foray into the opposition penalty box. I love those games. It shows all the discipline and nous required to win a game of football and get three points.

But most of the time it’s great to see an attacking team tear the opposition apart, pull them all over the pitch and bang in a load of goals.

A few Non-League strikers have been filling their boots already this season.

Defenders best look away now, because what better place to start that Winchester City hot-shot Warren Bentley. After their opening two games in the Evo-Stik League Southern South & West, the 24-year had scored nine goals. That’s NINE goals, in TWO games. Just 42 minutes into the new season, Bentley had five as the greedy goal machine helped his side batter Bridgwater Town 7-2. The following Tuesday he clearly let his level drop, managing just FOUR against Wimborne Town. Clearly the concept of defending had been abandoned altogether with Winchester running out 6-5 winners. You won’t be surprised to know he’ll soon be re-setting his 30 goal target if his ratio keeps up.

Then there’s Gosport Borough’s Justin Bennett. He’s also seemingly decided hat-tricks are so last season. The top scorer in the Conference South last season, Bennett hammered four past Weston-super-Mare last Tuesday.

It’s caught on in the FA Cup. AFC Liverpool’s Steve Jones hit five in their 9-2 demolition of Chadderton in the extra preliminary round. He wasn’t the only five-star show with Melford Simpson helping himself to the same number as Shoreham brushed St Francis Rangers aside 8-0.

And Luke Barlone fired in four as Coleshill steamrolled Ellesmere Rangers 11-0. At the same stage last year, the Midland League side also racked up double figures.

Add in two half-way line strikes from Oxford City’s Bradley Bubb and Ashton Town’s Danny Coid, who got his against Widnes after just three seconds, and this season is already a goal feast.

But someone scoring nine goals in two games doesn’t happen all that often so we sent The NLP cameras along to get some snaps of Bentley with his Winchester City team-mates before Saturday’s game at Yate Town. The final score? 0-0. Of course it was. Bet it was a good game though.

Knebworth 3-1 Lemsford

Frazer Triggs and Tony Malocco's side made it seven points from nine with a home win over Lemsford in this local derby.

The Ks didn't have it all their own way, going behind just after the half-hour mark. The first chance of the game was spurned when Ross Murphy fired narrowly wide from Elliott Polzin's left wing cross. Sam Harte lifted his shot over the bar after Kwame Hoyte set him free. Following a drinks break the Ks were caught napping as Lemsford broke the deadlock.

The hosts responded immediately; Charlie Pratt's cross was flapped at by the Lemy stopper, bouncing off George Taylor's back and into Murphy's direction, the forward's header was blocked but he poked home the loose ball to equalise. Pratt should have put the Ks ahead before the interval but after showing fine skill to bring the ball under control he blasted over and into the gardens.

Knebworth's superior fitness paid dividends in the second half as the hosts brushed Lemsford aside. Kwame Hoyte put the Ks ahead, slamming home his first for the club from Mark Jeffery's corner. George Taylor, wearing the skipper's armband after Lewis Coward departed, sent a thumping header into the net from another Jeffery cross to make the points certain.

Club History…

Knebworth Football Club was formed in 1901 as founder members of the North Herts League and were crowned champions on five occasions and won the county Junior Cup in 1912/13, before moving to the Herts County League in 1948.

A period of success came in the 1970s with a host of championships and cup wins, often under the influence of ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Johnny Brooks. Knebworth Football Club moved up the football ladder in 1983 to the South Midlands League, as well as to a new ground at Old Knebworth Lane. After five years the club returned to the North Herts League due to financial difficulties, winning three cups and a league title in two seasons, before going back to the Herts County League.

There is no evidence to suggest that the club ever had a youth section, and in 1977 Doug Dilley set up Knebworth Youth Football Club initially with just an U12 boys team. The club began to grow and quickly had teams at U9 and U10 for the following season. The club continued to grow and within 25 years there were boys and girls teams representing the club from Under 6 through to Under 17 and over 200 registered players.

Knebworth Football Club folded in 1995 when their ground at Old Knebworth Lane was sold as a health club. Four years later, Martyn Bond took his Knebworth Youth Football Club U18 side into senior football and re-formed Knebworth Football Club. After four successful years in the Hertford & District League the club were elected to the Herts Senior County League, achieving the FA's 'Charter Standard' award that same year and being crowned Herts FA 'Adult Club of the Year' in 2005.

Knebworth Youth Football Club first achieved the FA's 'Charter Standard' award in 2004 and went on to pick up the Herts FA 'Club of the Year' in this category in both 2006 and also 2008. Further hard work and continued development saw the club achieve the coveted FA 'Development Club' status.

In summer 2013, Knebworth Youth Football Club was incorporated into Knebworth Football Club.

Knebworth Old Boys Football Club formed in the late 1980s as a veterans team playing on Sunday mornings, and in May 2014 agreed to join the club to bring all Knebworth football under one banner.
