Final Playoff Berths at Stake As Nfl Regular Season Concludes FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 12/24/19 http://twitter.com/nfl345 FINAL PLAYOFF BERTHS AT STAKE AS NFL REGULAR SEASON CONCLUDES To help celebrate the NFL’s 100th season, each week has featured an NFL 100 Game of the Week. Each game is a nod to a momentous game played, a fierce rivalry that spans decades, a matchup of original teams and/or a game in which history was made. The NFL has designated the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS-SEATTLE SEAHAWKS game as the NFL 100 Game of the Week because the division rivals engaged in an epic NFC Championship Game on January 19, 2014. The Seahawks defeated the 49ers, 23-17, to advance to Super Bowl XLVIII after overcoming an early 10-0 deficit. In the third quarter, Seattle RB MARSHAWN LYNCH scored on a 40-yard run to knot the game at 10-10. Then, after ANQUAN BOLDIN caught a 26-yard touchdown from COLIN KAEPERNICK to vault San Francisco back on top, 17-10, DOUG BALDWIN returned the ensuing kickoff 69 yards to set up a STEPHEN HAUSCHKA field goal. In the fourth quarter, QB RUSSELL WILSON found WR JERMAINE KEARSE on fourth-and-7 for a 35-yard touchdown pass to give Seattle its first lead, 20-17, and the Seahawks used three fourth-quarter takeaways – a MICHAEL BENNETT fumble recovery (forced by a CLIFF AVRIL sack) and interceptions by KAM CHANCELLOR and MALCOLM SMITH, with an athletic assist from RICHARD SHERMAN – to seal the victory. Five teams remain in contention for two remaining playoff berths. Six clubs will fight for three remaining first-round byes. Homefield advantage and two division titles are up for grabs in the NFC. All 16 games are division contests and, with one week to go, there are still 15 teams in contention for a trip to Super Bowl LIV. Including 2019 with the BUFFALO BILLS, GREEN BAY PACKERS, MINNESOTA VIKINGS and SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS, since the 12-team playoff format was adopted in 1990 – a streak of 30 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before. Six of the eight divisions have been clinched. And there’s still plenty to play for in Week 17. In the AFC, five teams have already punched their tickets to the postseason: Baltimore (13-2, AFC North and homefield advantage), Buffalo (10-5, playoff berth), Houston (10-5, AFC South), Kansas City (11-4, AFC West) and New England (12-3, AFC East). Oakland (7-8), Pittsburgh (8-7) and Tennessee (8-7) are vying for the final AFC Wild Card berth, while the Chiefs and Patriots are fighting for the AFC’s lone remaining first-round bye. In the NFC, five teams have locked up playoff spots: Green Bay (12-3, NFC North), Minneasota (10-5, playoff berth), New Orleans (12-3, NFC South), San Francisco (12-3, playoff berth) and Seattle (11-4, playoff berth). San Francisco and Seattle play on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC). The winner captures the NFC West and possibly homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. The team that loses enters the playoffs with an NFC Wild Card berth. In the NFC, the road to Super Bowl LIV in Miami will go through one of four cities, as Green Bay, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle all have an opportunity to earn the conference’s top seed on Sunday. Philadelphia needs a win at the New York Giants (4:25 PM ET, FOX) to lock up the NFC East. A Giants win opens the door for Dallas, which would then get into the postseason with a home win over the Redskins (4:25 PM ET, FOX). It’s all on the line in Week 17. .

With great power comes great responsibility, and no owner uses his for self-serving interests more frequently than the Patriots’. Some of the NFL’s most prominent issues — national anthem protests, distrust between players and owners, the fallout from continued and necessary CTE studies, all that — are a direct result of the league’s knee-jerk reaction to almost anything that threatens to tarnish the shield. I call it the CYA plan. Instead of working together to advance the greater good with a sensible solution, the men in charge seek to cover their own backside. The anthem protests are the perfect example. The NBA quickly and successfully identified a solution in the form of a blanket decree that all teams must stand for the anthem. And when’s the last time you read a report on anthem issues in the NBA? There haven’t been any. There’s been zero blowback from a league roster that’s 70 percent black. The NBA’s all good. This isn’t hard. Meantime, the wishy-washy NFL tried to appease this group ... and that group ... and that other group ... and the end result has been distrust from players and alienating a sizable chunk of its fandom. Nobody follows the CYA plan — ignoring what’s best for the league in order to help itself — better than Kraft. That brings us to McDaniels, who reneged on a promise to join the Colts as coach.
