CAHFT FINALIZES CULTURAL PRESENTATIONS FOR 2013 CARIBBEAN HERITAGE MONTH FESTIVAL

Houston, TX – The Board of Directors, the members and the volunteers of the Caribbean American Heritage Foundation of Texas (CAHFT), a Texas non-profit organization established to partner, collaborate and assist the growing Texas Caribbean Community has finalized the cultural presentations for their 2013 Annual Caribbean Heritage Month Festival.

This celebration of National Caribbean American Heritage Month (celebrated nationally June of every year) will be held on Saturday June 1, 2013 at Jones Plaza, 601 Louisiana St., Houston, TX 77002 commencing at 12p.m. and ending at 10p.m. As June was declared National Caribbean American Heritage Month by President George W. Bush in 2006, CAHFT is pleased to present a program that touches all the unique aspects and cultures of the Caribbean. Proceeds from the event will benefit the CAHFT Educational Scholarship Fund. This Annual Caribbean Heritage Month Festival is sponsored by Bud Light.

CAHFT will present an outstanding line up of cultural artist for this year's festival. The lineup of cultural bands includes:

 The Galaxy Band - One of Houston's premiere Reggae Band  Mi Rumba - A Tropical, Merengue, Bachata Band who boasts members from several Caribbean nations including The Dominican Republic, has huge following in the Houston Area  Jamai Band - A popular Soca Caribbean Band in the Greater Houston Area with a loyal following in the Baytown Area  Young Garifuna Sound - One of Houston's Premiere Punta Band, which music originates in Belize and popular in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Southern Mexico and the United States  Moving Stars Tassa Group - is Houston's #1 Tassa Band. Tassa is an Indian tradition which is very popular in Trinidad. Tassa is a bowl shaped drum of Indian descent that is hung from the neck and played with two thin very flexible sticks.

The festival will also feature a Parade of Flags which will put 32 Caribbean Nations on full display. The day will also include several cultural native dances; artists performing original songs in honor of National Caribbean American Heritage Month, vibrant carnival costumes will be on display, a Kid’s Zone, lots of native foods and much much more.

Peoples of Caribbean descent represent an estimated 7% of the Greater Houston population. There are over 25 Caribbean community organizations as well as three Caribbean Student Organizations at three universities in the Houston area as well. Houston is second only to City in the total number of consulate offices with 98: of which six are Caribbean Consulates. According to ’s Honorary Consul Omari Fullerton, there are over 50,000 people of Jamaican descent residing in the Greater Houston Area.
